Thermography: a call for scientific studies to establish its diagnostic efficacy.

Thermography is reported to provide objective evidence of physiologic dysfunction in patients with low back pain and sciatica. This diagnostic test is appealing because it is painless, non-invasive, has no known adverse biologic effects, presents comprehensible graphic information, requires only a moderate investment in equipment, and should be an inexpensive procedure to perform. Unfortunately, the complete scientific information necessary to assess its diagnostic reliability is not available. This article discusses other experiments which have been performed to assess the diagnostic accuracy

Ultrasound-guided cooled radiofrequency ablation for sacroiliac joint pain in a patient with PsAPASH syndrome: A case report.

PsAPASH syndrome is a rare autoinflammatory disorder comprising psoriatic arthritis, pyoderma gangrenosum, acne, and hidradenitis suppurativa, characterized by severe cutaneous and musculoskeletal manifestations that are often refractory to systemic therapies. Sacroiliitis is a recognized feature of PsAPASH, contributing significantly to functional disability. While cooled radiofrequency ablation has emerged as an effective treatment for chronic sacroiliac joint pain, performing interventional procedures in patients with extensive active hidradenitis suppurativa poses unique challenges due to

Clinical impact of enhanced recovery after spinal surgery protocols on one-level lumbar arthrodesis: results from a single-center randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols aim to improve surgical outcomes, by mitigating postoperative stress through multimodal perioperative care. In spinal surgery, such protocols may reduce pain, hospital length of stay (LoS), and opioid use. However, prior retrospective studies often suffer from heterogeneity in patient populations and surgical procedures, limiting interpretability. This trial was designed to evaluate the impact of an ERAS protocol on short-term clinical outcomes and LoS in patients undergoing elective single-level lumbar arthrodesis for degenerative s

Clinical Application of Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block Device for Safe and Secure IANB by Any Operator.

The inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) is an established technique with a success rate of 60-80%; however, large errors have been reported among operators. Some dentists do not prefer to use IANB because of the risk of complications. Nevertheless, it is a useful technique for pain control, and a secure IANB offers significant benefits to operators and patients. This case series study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the "IANB Device," a nerve block guide for IANB, and the adverse events associated with its use in clinical practice. IANB was performed using the device on five patients who

Clinical and Patient-Reported Outcomes Following Peroneus Brevis Reconstruction With Hamstring Tendon Autograft.

BACKGROUND: Peroneal tendon injuries are a common cause of lateral ankle pain and instability. While the use of hamstring autograft has been proposed as a viable surgical option for peroneus brevis reconstruction, reported outcomes with this technique are limited in the literature. We present patient-reported and clinical outcomes for patients who underwent peroneus brevis reconstruction with hamstring autograft. METHODS: Thirty-one patients were retrospectively identified who underwent a procedure including peroneus brevis reconstruction with hamstring autograft for peroneal tendinopathy bet

Clinical results of endoscopic treatment without repair for partial thickness gluteal tears.

INTRODUCTION: Various surgical treatments have been proposed for greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) related to gluteal tendinopathy with partial thickness tears. The clinical results of endoscopic debridement without repair of these gluteal tears are not well known. The objectives of this study were to determine if this procedure leads to: (1) reduction of pain, (2) functional improvement, (3) patient satisfaction (on scale of 0 to 10). HYPOTHESIS: Endoscopic treatment without tendon repair provides short-term pain relief in patients with GTPS due to partial thickness gluteal tears. M

The impact of different health dimensions on overall quality of life related to kyphoplasty and non-surgical management.

UNLABELLED: This study uses data from a previously published randomised trial where balloon kyphoplasty was compared to non-surgical management. Of the improved overall quality of life, 60 % was caused by decreased pain. However, ignoring other dimensions of quality of life would underestimate the procedure's effect. INTRODUCTION: Acute back pain has been viewed as the most important factor lowering quality of life (QoL) for patients suffering vertebral fractures. The objective of this study was to quantify the impact of different health dimensions on overall QoL using patient-reported outcom

Trigeminal neuralgia in young adults.

OBJECT: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a form of facial pain that can be debilitating if left untreated. It typically affects elderly adults and is thought to be related to neurovascular compression. It is uncommon in people younger than 30 years of age, with only 1% of cases reportedly occurring in those younger than 20 years of age. The most common cause of compression in young adults is thought to be venous nerve compression either alone or in association with arterial nerve compression. The objective of this study was to review data in cases of TN in which patients were 25 years of age or yo

Individuals with chronic pain have the same response to placebo analgesia as healthy controls in terms of magnitude and reproducibility.

It is unclear whether a diagnosis of chronic pain is associated with an increase or decrease in the placebo response. The aim of this study was to use an experimental placebo conditioning paradigm to test whether expectancy for pain relief impacts on acute pain perception in individuals with a chronic pain diagnosis of osteoarthritis (OA) or fibromyalgia (FM), compared to healthy individuals (HIs). An inert cream was applied to the dominant forearm of participants (60 OA, 79 FM, and 98 HI), randomly assigned to either a placebo or control group. In both groups, an inactive cream was applied to

[Atypical odontalgia - a little known phantom pain].

BACKGROUND: Atypical odontalgia (AO) was described in the dental literature more than 200 years ago, and it is included in most taxonomies and textbooks of pain. Nonetheless, it remains one of the most frequently misdiagnosed intraoral pain conditions. TERMINOLOGY: Due to similarities with phantom pain, AO is also referred to as "phantom tooth pain". CLINICAL FEATURES: AO is characterized by persistent throbbing pain in or around a former or present permanent tooth (preferably molars and premolars). Clinical and radiographic examination, however, does not reveal any organic cause of the pain

Postamputation Pain Treated With Pulsed Radiofrequency - A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Transmetatarsal amputation (TMA) is a commonly performed procedure that can result in residual limb and phantom pain. Neuromodulation using pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) is a growing area of research in the management of refractory postamputation pain (PAP). CASE REPORT: A veteran in his sixties with a history of diabetes required a left TMA due to gas gangrene, subsequently complicated by severe, prolonged postoperative pain. PRF was performed first on the saphenous nerve using ultrasound guidance, then 12 weeks later on the saphenous, peroneal, and sural nerves. This resulted in a

Multiorganizational consensus to define guiding principles for perioperative pain management in patients with chronic pain, preoperative opioid tolerance, or substance use disorder.

Significant knowledge gaps exist in the perioperative pain management of patients with a history of chronic pain, substance use disorder, and/or opioid tolerance as highlighted in the US Health and Human Services Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force 2019 report. The report emphasized the challenges of caring for these populations and the need for multidisciplinary care and a comprehensive approach. Such care requires stakeholder alignment across multiple specialties and care settings. With the intention of codifying this alignment into a reliable and efficient processes, a co

[The estimation of the effectiveness of the anesthetic techniques applied for the combined treatment of the patients presenting with chronic generalized periodontitis].

UNLABELLED: The treatment of patients presenting with periodontitis is one of the most difficult tasks facing modern dentistry. Most periodontal manipulations are associated with pain sensation; therefore, pain relief is one of the most topical problems in dentistry. The objective of the present study was to enhance both the safety and the effectiveness of anesthetization procedures applied for the treat-ment of patients suffering from moderately severe chronic generalized periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The effectiveness of local anesthesia was estimated using the methods of functional
