High-density dependence but low impact on selected reproduction parameters of Brucella suis biovar 2 in wild boar hunting estates from South-Western Spain.

Porcine brucellosis is a disease caused by Brucella suis, which is characterized by reproductive disorders in pigs. The number of cases of swine brucellosis has risen in many European countries, likely because of the presence of a wild reservoir of B. suis in wild boar. This study aimed at evaluating factors that may influence the probability of infection with Brucella spp. in wild boar and at assessing the impact of a previous contact with Brucella spp. on reproductive parameters of wild boar. Two hundred and four wild boar living in Extremadura (south-western Spain) were studied. The presenc

The relationship between antibody status to bovine corona virus and bovine respiratory syncytial virus and disease incidence, reproduction and herd characteristics in dairy herds.

BACKGROUND: Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and bovine corona virus (BCV) affects cattle worldwide. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of these infections on general health and reproduction parameters measurable on herd level and to explore the association between antibody status and some herd characteristics. METHODS: We collected a pooled milk sample from five primiparous cows from 79 Swedish dairy herds in September 2006. The samples were analysed for immunoglobulin G antibodies to BCV and BRSV with indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Herd level data from 1 Septem…

Mice lacking Raf kinase inhibitor protein-1 (RKIP-1) have altered sperm capacitation and reduced reproduction rates with a normal response to testicular injury.

Raf kinase inhibitor protein-1 (RKIP-1) belongs to the phosphatidyl ethanolamine-binding family of proteins (PEBP), which are highly conserv … citated compared with their wild-type counterparts. Data from mating experiments indicate decreased reproduction rates between crosses of RKIP-1(-/-) male mice and either heterozygous or RKIP-1(-/-) females. Furthermore, RKIP immunolocalization of epididymal sperm supports transfer of the protein from germ cell cytoplasm to the sperm via the cytoplasmic drople …

Viral wasting syndrome of swine: experimental reproduction of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome in gnotobiotic swine by coinfection with porcine circovirus 2 and porcine parvovirus.

One-day-old gnotobiotic piglets were inoculated intranasally with in vitro passaged porcine circovirus 1 (PCV-1), PCV-2, and porcine parvovirus (PPV) alone or in combination (PCV-1/PCV-2, PCV-1/PPV, and PCV-2/PPV). Piglets were evaluated for 1) the development of porcine postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), 2) distribution of viral antigens by immunochemistry, and 3) viremia and the presence of viral DNA in nasal and ocular secretions and feces. All single agent-infected piglets and piglets infected with PCV-1/PCV-2 or PCV-1/PPV were clinically asymptomatic. They were transiently

Serum oestradiol and progesterone concentrations during prolonged coasting in 15 women at risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome following ovarian stimulation for assisted reproduction treatment.

Serum oestradiol and progesterone concentrations were examined for up to 7 days after withholding gonadotrophins whilst continuing pituitary down-regulation in 15 women at serious risk of severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) (serum oestradiol >6000 pg/ml and >15 follicles per ovary). Serum oestradiol concentrations rose on day 1 of coasting in all but two of the 15 women before falling, the decrement being in the order of 40% on each day. This observation permits a rational basis for the estimation of frequency of serum oestradiol measurements and duration of coasting. The trends an

The effect of dietary protein on reproduction in the mare. VII. Embryonic development, early embryonic death, foetal losses and their relationship with serum progestagen.

Sixty-four Thoroughbred and Anglo-Arab mares aged 6-12 years were randomly allocated to 4 dietary groups and fed diets that differed in the total protein content and quality (essential amino-acids). Forty mares were non-lactating and 24 lactating. Eight mares were withdrawn from the investigation owing to injuries or gynaecological pathology. An overall conception rate of 94.6% and a foaling rate of 80% was achieved. Five of 14 (35.7%) mares (Group 1) fed a low-quality protein diet suffered from early embryonic loss before 90 days of pregnancy compared to 3 of 41 (7.3%) mares in the remaining

Seasonal Dynamics of Sex Ratio, Reproduction, and Parasite-specific Feminization in the Hermit Crab Pagurus filholi at a Fixed Coastal Site in Chiba, Japan.

Reproductive output in intertidal crustaceans is reshaped by seasonal changes in host demography and its interaction with parasitic castration, yet parasite-species-resolved time series remain scarce for hermit crabs. We conducted year-round monitoring of the hermit crab Pagurus filholi at a fixed intertidal site in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, with monthly sampling from January to December 2025. Hosts were sexed and female reproductive status (ovigerous vs. non-ovigerous) was recorded, and rhizocephalan infections were diagnosed by externa morphology and subsequently assigned to Peltogasterella g

Effects of Temperature and Salinity on Ovarian Development and Differences in Energy Metabolism Between Reproduction and Growth During Ovarian Development in the Lateolabrax maculatus.

Fish reproduction requires suitable salinity and temperature, as well as sufficient energy. This study investigated temperature and salinity effects on ovarian development of Lateolabrax maculatus and energy metabolism differences between reproduction and growth. Two salinities (4‱ and 30‱) and temperatures (18 ± 1 °C and 30 ± 1 °C) formed four treatments: SWNT (30‱, 30 ± 1 °C), SWLT (30‱, 18 ± 1 °C), FWLT (4‱, 18 ± 1 °C), and FWNT (4‱, 30 ± 1 °C). GSI and sex hormones (FSH, LH, E2, and 17α,20β-DHP) were measured. Transcriptome analysis explored how temperature and salinity regulate ovarian de…

The Sixth Mass Extinction and Amphibian Species Sustainability Through Reproduction and Advanced Biotechnologies, Biobanking of Germplasm and Somatic Cells, and Conservation Breeding Programs (RBCs).

Primary themes in intergenerational justice are a healthy environment, the perpetuation of Earth's biodiversity, and the sustainable management of the biosphere. However, the current rate of species declines globally, ecosystem collapses driven by accelerating and catastrophic global heating, and a plethora of other threats preclude the ability of habitat protection alone to prevent a cascade of amphibian and other species mass extinctions. Reproduction and advanced biotechnologies, biobanking of germplasm and somatic cells, and conservation breeding programs (RBCs) offer a transformative chan…

Reflecting sex, social class and race inequalities in reproduction? Study of the gender representations conveyed by 38 fertility centre websites in 8 European countries.

BACKGROUND: Fertility centre websites are a key sources of information on medically assisted reproduction (MAR) for both infertile people and the general public. As part of a global fertility market, they are also a window to attract potential future patients. They give formal and practical information but in the way the information is displayed, they also convey social representations, and in particular, gender representation in its intersectional dimension. The objective is to analyse the sex, class and race representations regarding reproduction and parenthood that are embedded in the conte…

Risk of Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy After Fresh and Frozen Embryo Transfer in Assisted Reproduction: A Population-Based Cohort Study With Within-Sibship Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Frozen embryo transfer (frozen-ET) is increasingly common because of improved cryopreservation methods and elective freezing of all embryos. Frozen-ET is associated with higher risk of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy than both natural conception and fresh embryo transfer (fresh-ET), but whether this is attributable to parental factors or treatment is unknown. METHODS: Using the Medical Birth Registries of Denmark (1994-2014), Norway, and Sweden (1988-2015), linked to data from national quality registries and databases on assisted reproduction, we designed a population-based co…

Effect of a high-calorie diet and constant light exposure on female reproduction, metabolism and immune inflammation: A comparative study of different mouse models.

PROBLEM: Excess caloric intake and irregular circadian rhythm could severely impair female reproductive, metabolic, and immune function. However, the similarities and differences between their individual and combined effects and mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. Due to limitations and confounding factors in clinical research, we used these two kinds of unhealthy factors to intervene the mice singly or in combination to explore their effects on individuals. METHOD OF STUDY: We used a high-calorie diet (HCD), constant light exposure (CLE), and a high-calorie diet combined with constant

Capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry as a tool for the noninvasive target metabolomic analysis of underivatized amino acids for evaluating embryo viability in assisted reproduction.

Monitoring metabolite uptake and excretion in the culture medium is a noninvasive technique that is used for the metabolic study of cleaving embryos after in vitro fertilization. Low sample consumption, the versatility of the detection, and optimal sensitivity and selectivity are essential elements for extracellular metabolome analyses, and can be conveniently achieved by combining CE with mass spectrometric detection. This paper reports a method for amino acid determination in a limited volume sample (8 μL) of spent culture media collected after the cultivation of in vitro fertilized embryos.
