Detecting Early-Stage Pressure Injury in Patients With Dark Skin Tones Using an Enhanced Physical Assessment Technique and Halogen Lighting.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to identify stage 1 pressure injuries (PIs) in patients with darker skin tones using an enhanced skin assessment (Skin Assessment for Dark Skin, SADS) and halogen lighting. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This quality improvement project was conducted on 3 units at a large university teaching hospital in Southeast Michigan. The project was originally designed so that participating patients were identified by bedside nurses as having sufficient melanin to obscure blanching on the hand/forearm using regular lighting, but this goal was not m

Physician peer assessments for compliance with methadone maintenance treatment guidelines.

INTRODUCTION: Medical associations and licensing bodies face pressure to implement quality assurance programs, but evidence-based models are lacking. To improve the quality of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Canada, conducts an innovative quality assurance program on the basis of peer assessments. Using data from this program, we assessed physician compliance with MMT guidelines and determined whether physician factors (e.g., training, years of practice), practice type, practice location, and/or caseload is associated with MMT guideline

Depression and Anxiety Changes Associated with Matched Increases in Physical Activity in Education-, Self-Regulation-, and Self-Regulation Plus Relaxation-Based Obesity Treatments in Women: A Pilot Study Investigating Implications for Controlling Emotional Eating.

Background/Objectives: Improvements in depression and anxiety, associated with moderate increases in physical activity, might induce reductions in emotional eating, especially in women with obesity, where emotion-driven eating is highly problematic. This pilot, field-based study sought to assess whether physical activity increase, itself, primarily predicts improved mood (biochemical theories) or if psychosocial factors associated with cognitive-behavioral treatment are principal correlates (behavioral theories). An aim was to inform improved treatment processes. Methods: Women with obesity pa

Children's Communication Rights in the Holistic Assessment of Speech Sound Disorders: Do Speech-Language Pathologists Use the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Framework?

PURPOSE: During the assessment process, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have the opportunity to account for the involvement, thoughts, and views of children with speech sound disorders (SSDs). This is in alignment with the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC; UNICEF, n.d.; United Nations, 1989) including CRC Article 12 (Respect for children's views), Article 13 (Sharing thoughts freely), and Article 23 (Children with disabilities), which affirms SLPs' role to facilitate participation and consider perspectives. A systematic review of pediatric self-report symptom measures: Congruence with the theory of unpleasant symptoms.

PURPOSE: Many children and adolescents experience unpleasant symptoms due to acute and chronic illnesses. Several symptom measures specific to children and adolescents are available to assess unpleasant symptoms. What is unclear is how well these measures assess all dimensions of the symptom experience. Using the Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms (TOUS) as a guide, the purpose of this systematic review of self-report symptom measures was to examine the comprehensiveness of current symptom measures designed to assess children's and adolescents' symptom experiences. CONCLUSIONS: The TOUS did not gu

Can parents reliably report burn scar quality on behalf of their child? A clinimetric observational study of child-proxy agreement on the pediatric patient scale of the POSAS.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of scar quality is an essential component of follow-up care and outcome evaluation in pediatric burn patients. The pediatric patient scale of the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) is a recently developed patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for this purpose. In pediatric care, proxy reports are commonly used when children are too young to self-report. However, the extent to which proxy reports reflect children's own perception of scar quality is unclear. This study evaluated child-proxy agreement on the pediatric patient scale of the POSAS. METHO

Development of a metabolomics-based index to monitor dietary effects on chronic inflammation: The Dietary Metabolomics Inflammation Index.

BACKGROUND: The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) is widely used to assess the inflammatory potential of diet, but it relies on self-reported dietary assessment and does not directly capture individual differences in metabolism as an intermediate connection to inflammation. High-resolution metabolomics provides objective measurements that complement dietary assessment to support precision nutrition to control inflammation. OBJECTIVE: We developed, tested, and applied a Dietary Metabolite Inflammatory Index (DMII) to assess diet-related chronic inflammation using metabolites measured by liquid

Feasibility of return to sports assessment 6 months after patellar instability surgery.

BACKGROUND: The evidence regarding the usefulness of assessment tools to support decisions of return-to-sport after surgery for patellar instability is scarce. The purpose of this study was therefore to explore the feasibility of functional tests assessing readiness for return-to-sport six months after patellar stabilizing surgery. However, there is little evidence on what a functional assessment should include to support these decisions following surgery for patellar instability. Therefore the purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of functional tests assessing readiness for ret

When theory beats practice: the implementation of competency-based education at healthcare workplaces : Focus group interviews with students, mentors, and educators of six healthcare disciplines.

BACKGROUND: Work-integrated learning constitutes a large part of current healthcare education. During the last decades, a competency-based educational (CBE) approach has been introduced to reduce the theory-practice gap and to promote continuous competency development. Different frameworks and models have been developed to support CBE implementation in practice. Although CBE is now well-established, implementation at healthcare workplaces remains complex and controversial. This study aims to explore how students, mentors, and educators from different healthcare disciplines perceive the impleme

Factors associated with frenotomy after a multidisciplinary assessment of infants with breastfeeding difficulties.

OBJECTIVE: Frenotomy for ankyloglossia has increased nearly 10-fold over the past few decades despite insufficient evidence that the procedure improves breastfeeding outcomes. There is no universally accepted method for identifying patients who may benefit from the procedure. The objective of this study is to determine if comprehensive feeding evaluations and targeted interventions can identify children who should undergo procedures, and to identify factors associated with lip or tongue frenotomy to treat breastfeeding difficulties. METHODS: This observational quality improvement study follow
