Comparative analysis of the anterior and posterior length and deflection angle of the cranial base, in individuals with facial Pattern I, II and III.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the variations in the anterior cranial base (S-N), posterior cranial base (S-Ba) and deflection of the cranial base (SNBa) among three different facial patterns (Pattern I, II and III). METHOD: A sample of 60 lateral cephalometric radiographs of Brazilian Caucasian patients, both genders, between 8 and 17 years of age was selected. The sample was divided into 3 groups (Pattern I, II and III) of 20 individuals each. The inclusion criteria for each group were the ANB angle, Wits appraisal and the facial profile angle (G'.Sn.Pg'). To compare the mean values obtain

Do high-speed drills generate high-frequency noise in mastoid surgery?

BACKGROUND: The introduction of increasingly high speed drills for mastoid surgery has heightened the concern that cochlea damage may occur in both the operated and nonoperated ear. It has been observed clinically that this damage could be associated with frequencies above 8,000 Hz and that, to observe these changes, high-frequency audiometry should be performed. Previous studies have investigated noise transmission to the cochlea at frequencies below 4,000 Hz only. There having been, until recently, limitations to the equipment available to measure higher frequencies. OBJECTIVE: To define th

Current concepts in stereotactic radiosurgery - a neurosurgical and radiooncological point of view.

Stereotactic radiosurgery is related to the history of "radiotherapy" and "stereotactic neurosurgery". The concepts for neurosurgeons and radiooncologists have been changed during the last decade and have also transformed neurosurgery. The gamma knife and the stereotactically modified linear accelerator (LINAC) are radiosurgical equipments to treat predetermined intracranial targets through the intact skull without damaging the surrounding normal brain tissue. These technical developments allow a more precise intracranial lesion control and offer even more conformal dose plans for irregularly

Primary hydatid cyst of the infratemporal fossa.

Hydatid cyst disease is a rare parasitic disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus. This parasite in the larval stage can thrive in many parts of the body, most frequently in the liver. Head and neck involvement of the disease is rare. Herein, we present a case of primary hydatid cyst occurring in the infratemporal fossa, which is an extremely rare localization.

[MRI observation on Arnold-Chiari I malformation].

Craniocerical junction of 42 patients with Arnold-Chiari I malformation (ACM-1) and 41 normal controls were studied. In addition to the decendent tonsil, all the components in the posterior cranial fossa including the 4th ventricle, oblongata medulla and the sinus confluence of patients with ACM- 1 were decended. Although the spinal foramen magnum anterior -posterior diameter was smaller but not statistically different from the control. The results suggest that the main pathology of ACM- 1 is the shallow and small posterior cranial fossa and the resulted organ decendent as a whole.

[Medulloblastoma of posterior fossa in children--report of 42 cases].

Forty-two cases of medulloblastoma of posterior fossa in children are presented in this paper. Of the children, 28 were males and 14 females; their age ranged from 1.5 to 12 (mean 7.3) years. The foci found were in vermis (36) and cerebellar hemispheres (6). All of these children presented symptoms and signs of obviously increased intracranial pressure, and 31(77%) of them had the signs of cerebellar functional deficits. CT scan showed severe obstructive hydrocephalus in 39 cases. 42 children with posterior fossa medulloblastoma underwent surgical resection. Three died of postoperative prespir

Sphenoethmoidal mucoceles with intracranial extension--three case reports.

Three unusual cases of sphenoethmoidal mucoceles with rare intracranial extension are reported. A 64-year-old female presented with a 7-month history of right visual disturbance. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated a huge mass in the right middle fossa. She underwent right frontotemporal craniotomy. Postoperatively, her proptosis and cranial nerve dysfunction had improved markedly. A 53-year-old female complained of headache, nausea, and dizziness. CT and MR imaging revealed a cystic mass filling the right sphenoid sinus. The cystic lesion was evacuated th

Improved Quantification of MicroPET/CT Imaging Using CT-derived Scaling Factors.

PURPOSE: Combined micro-PET/CT scanners are widely employed to investigate models of brain disorders in rodents using PET-based coregistration. We examined if CT-based coregistration could improve estimates of brain dimensions and consequently estimates of nondisplaceable binding potential (BPND) in rodent PET studies. PROCEDURES: PET and CT scans were acquired on 5 female and 5 male CD-1 mice with 3-[18F]fluoro-5-(2-pyridinylethynyl)benzonitrile ([18F]FPEB), a radiotracer for the metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 5 (mGluR5). In the proposed PET/CT (PTCT) approach, the tracer-specific s

Lesion in Scalp and Skull as the First Manifestation of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary tumor of the liver and the fifth most common cancer in the world. The lungs, bone, and lymph nodes are frequent sites of metastasis of HCC. The purpose of the present study is show that metastases, although rare, must be among the differential diagnosis of skin lesions and that a diagnostic research based on these findings can be conducted. The authors report a rare case of metastatic hepatocellular injury to the scalp and skull treated by a radical surgical approach. Excision of the lesion in the scalp was performed "en bloc." The tumo

Relationship between types of head injury and age of pedestrian.

This paper explores the relationship between age and the different types of head injury received by pedestrians in traffic accidents with cars. The analysis is based on information collected by hospitals in England, and is supported by in-depth case examples. The principle result is that the risk of intracranial injury increases with age, whilst the risk of fracture to the head or facial bones remains relatively constant. This agrees with previous findings for other groups of casualties, which have reported that that the decrease in brain size leads to an increase in the relative motion of the

How I do it: endoscopic endonasal transclival resection of ventral foramen magnum meningioma.

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of ventral foramen magnum meningiomas (FMMs) is challenging due to intervening neurovascular structures. The endoscopic endonasal transclival approach provides a direct access, offering a potential route to achieve Simpson Grade 1 resection while minimizing brainstem retraction. METHOD: We detail the technical nuances of a binostril, four-handed EEA for a ventral FMM. We explain the key anatomical landmarks required for safe decompression, including clival drilling limits, the identification of pre-medullary neurovascular structures, and the execution of a mult

Adenoid-Nasopharyngeal Ratio and craniofacial growth in Children: A two-center longitudinal study with threshold and causal analyses.

PURPOSE: Adenoid hypertrophy is a common cause of pediatric upper-airway obstruction and is suspected to contribute to "adenoid facies", but longitudinal thresholds and causal dose-response relations between the adenoid-nasopharyngeal (A/N) ratio and craniofacial growth indices remain unclear. METHODS: We performed a two-center longitudinal cohort study of children aged 3-10 years who underwent clinically indicated lateral nasopharyngeal or cephalometric radiography between July 2021 and July 2024 at tertiary pediatric hospitals in Shanghai and Chongqing, China. Children with at least two eli

Factors influencing postoperative visual improvement in 208 patients with tuberculum sellae meningiomas.

OBJECTIVE: Tuberculum sellae meningiomas (TSMs) usually compress the optic nerve and optic chiasma, thus affecting vision. Surgery is an effective means to remove tumors and improve visual outcomes. On a larger scale, this study attempted to further explore and confirm the factors related to postoperative visual outcomes to guide the treatment of TSMs. METHODS: Data were obtained from 208 patients with TSMs who underwent surgery at our institution between January 2010 and August 2022. Demographics, ophthalmologic examination results, imaging data, extent of resection, radiotherapy status, and

International Tuberculum Sellae Meningioma Study: Surgical Outcomes and Management Trends.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tuberculum sellae meningiomas (TSMs) can be resected through transcranial (TCA) or expanded endonasal approach (EEA). The objective of this study was to report TSM management trends and outcomes in a large multicenter cohort. METHODS: This is a 40-site retrospective study using standard statistical methods. RESULTS: In 947 cases, TCA was used 66.4% and EEA 33.6%. The median maximum diameter was 2.5 cm for TCA and 2.1 cm for EEA ( P < .0001). The median follow-up was 26 months. Gross total resection (GTR) was achieved in 70.2% and did not differ between EEA and TCA

Metastatic Lesions of the Clivus: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic lesions of the clivus are extremely rare, having previously been estimated as representing 0.02% of all intracranial tumors. Owing to its close intracranial relationship with the clivus before entering the cavernous sinus, clinical palsies of the sixth cranial nerve have been classically associated with destructive lesions of this structure. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed was conducted for studies of patients with metastasis to the clivus from primary cancer at any site. Studies reported in English in the past 20 years from our last search on April 12, 2021 w
