Transdisciplinary women's health: a call to action.

Various women's health concerns (e.g., hormonal changes, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, immune deficiencies, respiratory diseases, eating disorders, substance use/abuse, sexually transmitted infections, stress, poverty, poor nutrition, and early childhood caries) are associated with oral-systemic etiologies that can either cause or form as a result of poor oral health. Nonetheless, the intersections of biological, social-behavioral, and structural factors that impact women's oral-systemic health are rarely examined. We argue for the need for transdisciplinary research

Stable individual differences on developmental tasks in young yellow-crowned parakeets, Cyanoramphus auriceps.

We report on stable individual differences in young yellow-crowned parakeets across 38 tasks of cognitive development on three scales involving object permanence, means-end relations, and spatial relations. Stable performance ranks on blocks of tasks emerged after 13 weeks in two groups of sibling parakeets, one hand-reared and the other parent-reared. Examination of subject characteristics, such as hatch order, sex, general activity level, avoidances, latencies, social status, and errors, showed no significant correlations with these performance ranks. Characteristic individual approaches to

Clinical evaluations for transfer of juveniles to criminal court: current practices and future research.

Completing clinical evaluations of juveniles considered for transfer to criminal court requires specialized expertise. However, there is little empirical foundation upon which they can be based. Within each of the three major evaluation domains (amenability to treatment, risk for future violence, and sophistication/maturity), we ask the following questions: a) Can forensic examiners properly assess this area, and if so using what tools?; b) How can social science research clarify the transfer evaluation, particularly as it is impacted by systems issues?; and c) How should the evaluation be str

Guidelines for treatment of chronic depression in the aphasic patient.

This article defines the language disorder of aphasia and the motor speech disorders of apraxia of speech and the dysarthrias. Discussion includes depression and the five definable sets of behaviors related to the phenomenon: motor-expressive behaviors, affective, cognitive, motivational, and somatic, and the relationship of self-concept to both depression and visual and verbal thought. Detailed discussion of treatment of chronic depression inpatients with non-organic reactive factors is presented. These include positive reinforcement of desirable behaviors, avoidance of verbal punishment, lab

Psychologic aspects of flatulent dyspepsia.

Psychologic and social factors have been implicated in the aetiology of dyspepsia. In this study these factors were investigated in relation to flatulent dyspepsia, a symptom complex that has traditionally been associated with gallbladder disease. Subjects completed the Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire and the Life Events Inventory and were interviewed in detail, using a semi-structured format. Three groups of patients with flatulent dyspepsia--those with and without gallbladder disease and post-cholecystectomy--all had significantly more associated somatic symptoms than non-dyspeptic subjects

Between utopias and everyday practices: ecopreneurs and new urban economies in Bologna.

This article examines how New Urban Economies (NUEs) contribute to, and reveal the contradictions of, socio-ecological transition in Italian cities, using Bologna as a case study. It brings together three strands of research that are usually treated separately: studies of distinctive and environmentally oriented consumption practices; sustainable entrepreneurship research combining supply-side and demand-side explanations; and scholarship on temporality, prefiguration, and everyday utopias. Integrating these perspectives allows us to shift attention from macro-level sustainability indicators t

Eyes ahead: a scoping review of technologies enabling humanoid robots to follow human gaze.

Gaze is a fundamental aspect of non-verbal communication in human interaction, playing an important role in conveying attention, intentions, and emotions. A key concept in gaze-based human interaction is joint attention, the focus of two individuals on an object in a shared environment. In the context of human-robot interaction (HRI), gaze-following has become a growing research area, as it enables robots to appear more socially intelligent, engaging, and likable. While various technical approaches have been developed to achieve this capability, a comprehensive overview of existing implementat

"Life still has meaning for me!" Exploring sources of meaningful life among palliative care patients: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Palliative care has increasingly shifted from a biomedical model toward holistic approaches that address physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. Meaning in life is a key determinant of quality of life in advanced illness, yet patient perspectives on how meaning is constructed within inpatient settings remain underexplored. This study aimed to explore how individuals receiving inpatient palliative care at a tertiary hospital in Turkey construct and sustain meaning in their daily lives. METHODS: This qualitative study used in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Nine patien

Experiences and actions taken by women to address delayed conception in Delhi, India: A qualitative study.

One in six people experiences infertility in their lifetime globally, including India. Understanding experiences and actions taken by people with delayed conception requires developing person-centred fertility care interventions. We applied the theory of planned behaviour to explore the experiences and actions of women in couples that failed to conceive in low to lower middle-income neighbourhoods of Delhi, India. This was a qualitative study among 35 women who had failed to conceive after 18 months. Data were collected between February and July 2021 through focus group discussions. Deductive

Integrating physical activity into the workplace: opportunities for enhancing employee health.

INTRODUCTION: Human health is closely linked to physical, social, and ecological environments. Since people spend a large portion of their time at work, this setting plays a key role in well-being. Desk workers often remain sedentary for 8-10 h daily, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and pain. The UP150 office concept aims to promote movement during working hours, supporting the mind-body connection, improving relationships, and enhancing both health and work quality. This study builds on previous research by evaluating the effects of the UP150 concept after 2 years of implemen

MRI-based correlates of brain changes and quality of life outcomes following radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.

PURPOSE: Radiotherapy (RT) for brain-related tumours can impact multiple neural structures responsible for cognitive, emotional, physical, and social functioning, which in turn may influence a patient’s quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to determine the demographic, dosimetric, and MRI-derived morphological factors associated with reduced QoL among patients following RT. METHODS: One hundred patients between the ages of 20 and 76 years who received RT and had both pre-RT and post-RT (6–12 months) MRI scans, along with completed QoL assessments (EORTC QLQ-C30 and HRQoL), were included. Holistic management of epilepsy in adults with intellectual development disorders.

This seminar addresses the complexity of the management of epilepsy in adults with intellectual development disorders (IDD), advocating holistic and multidisciplinary care aligned with the learning objectives of the International League Against Epilepsy. Epilepsy is significantly more prevalent in people with IDD, presenting unique diagnostic, therapeutic, and psychosocial challenges. Accurate diagnosis is hampered by limitations in communication, necessitating reliance on caregivers' observations. In adults with IDD and epilepsy, utilization of diagnostic tools, e.g., video electroencephalogr
