INTRODUCTION: Peritraumatic distress is a syndrome that involves negative emotions, such as anxiety, helplessness and horror, experienced during and shortly after a traumatic event. The intensity of peritraumatic distress is significantly linked to the intensity of post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) symptoms. The aim of the study was to study the intensity of peritraumatic distress symptoms in the mothers of severely ill children and the relationship between peritraumatic distress and psychological, socio-demographic and medical coefficients in the mothers.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a resilience enhancement program applying mindfulness meditation (REP-MM) and evaluate the effects of the program on post-traumatic stress (PTS), resilience, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with ileostomy.
METHODS: The REP-MM was developed by combining the resilience enhancement program with mindfulness meditation according to four patterns. The program was developed through identifying patients' needs, reviewing relevant literature, developing a preliminary program, and testing content validity and user evaluation. The

BACKGROUND: Police are frequently exposed to occupational trauma, making them vulnerable to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions. Through personal and occupational trauma police are also at risk of developing Complex PTSD (CPTSD), associated with prolonged and repetitive trauma. Police Occupational Health Services require effective interventions to treat officers experiencing mental health conditions, including CPTSD. However, there is a lack of guidance for the treatment of occupational trauma.
AIMS: To explore differences in demographics and trauma exposu

OBJECTIVE: Eritrea is the most frequent country of origin among asylum seekers in Switzerland. On their journey through the desert and across the Mediterranean Sea, Eritrea refugees are often exposed to traumatizing experiences. The aim of this study is to assess the mental health status and resilience of Eritrean migrants in Switzerland upon arrival and one-year post-arrival, using standardized mental health screening and resilience assessment tools.
RESULTS: At baseline, 107 refugees (11.2% female, median age 25) were interviewed: 52 (48.6%) screened positive for Post-Traumatic Stress Disor

Having reached the last phase of their lives, many Holocaust survivors (HS) experience an increase in vulnerability. Despite their remarkable ability to adapt, the process of aging presents them with new challenges, often leading to an increased need for therapy. This is made all the more difficult by the fact that there is little research on trauma therapy in old age. To date, no randomized controlled study has been carried out to examine the effectiveness of psychotherapy in HS. The present case studies report the implementation of life review therapy (LRT-HS) undertaken with two female HS w

Chronic pain and chronic PTSD are often comorbid sequelae in patients who have experienced life-threatening experiences such as combat, assaults, or motor vehicle accidents, presenting lifelong challenges for patients and for medical management in all settings. This article briefly reviews four models for exploring the interrelationships of chronic pain and chronic PTSD. The article presents a longitudinal case study, documented over 10 years, of a patient with chronic back pain, and delayed-onset chronic PTSD related to sexual trauma experienced as a young adult. Data from the case study are

Context The frequency of probable mental health diagnoses is much higher among public safety personnel (PSP) than in the general population, which can be explained in part by their operational duties. The most common operational stress injuries (OSI) among PSP in Canada are depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Because of their confidential and accessible nature, e-mental health interventions delivered via smartphones (mobile interventions) have great potential among PSP. The Mental Health Commission of Canada has proposed evaluative criteria for a compre

BACKGROUND: The presence of a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis or higher PTSD severity is associated with higher overall sexual dysfunction in female service members/veterans. However, the mechanisms linking PTSD to specific components of women's sexual arousal function, like lubrication and mental arousal, are unknown.
METHODS: We conducted a survey among 464 women who reported probable Criterion A exposure for PTSD. Path analysis examined (1) the association of PTSD with sexual arousal, (2) whether specific PTSD symptom clusters were uniquely associated with sexual arousal, a

BACKGROUND: Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic, multi-symptomatic disorder affecting an estimated 25-32% of the returning military veterans of the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf War. GWI presents with a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, muscle pain, cognitive problems, insomnia, rashes and gastrointestinal issues and continues to be a poorly understood illness. This heterogeneity of GWI symptom presentation complicates diagnosis as well as the identification of effective treatments. Defining subgroups of the illness may help alleviate these complications. Our aim is to determine if GWI can be

Women are the silent sufferers of war, they have higher rates of anxiety and depression after terror events than men who have been similarly exposed. In this study, we aim to explore the prevalence of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts/attempts among Iraqi women post-conflict. A sample of 1000 women was collected in this cross-sectional study that was conducted in Baghdad city from January through September 2020. Their mental state was addressed by assessing anxiety and depression on symptomatic basis using standard questions from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Di

Aim & methods: We conducted a pilot epigenome-wide association study of women from Tutsi ethnicity exposed to the genocide while pregnant and their resulting offspring, and a comparison group of women who were pregnant at the time of the genocide but living outside of Rwanda. Results: Fifty-nine leukocyte-derived DNA samples survived quality control: 33 mothers (20 exposed, 13 unexposed) and 26 offspring (16 exposed, 10 unexposed). Twenty-four significant differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were identified in mothers and 16 in children. Conclusions:In utero genocide exposure was associated

Learning theories of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) purport that fear-learning processes, such as those that support fear acquisition and extinction, are impaired. Computational models designed to capture specific processes involved in fear learning have primarily assessed model-free, or trial-and-error, reinforcement learning (RL). Although previous studies indicated that aspects of model-free RL are disrupted among individuals with PTSD, research has yet to identify whether model-based RL, which is inferential and contextually driven, is impaired. Given empirical evidence of aberrant c

Background/Purpose: A growing body of evidence suggests that people who are arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol are more likely to screen positive for psychiatric disorders than the general population. Additionally, psychiatric comorbidity has been shown to increase vulnerability to criminal re-offense. However, DUI programs face many barriers to screening for psychiatric disorders. This paper evaluates the sensitivity and specificity of a screening tool developed for these programs, the Computerized Assessment and Referral System (CARS) Screener. Methods: We used data fr

OBJECTIVE: Survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) report significant trauma histories, high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), head injuries and comorbid disorders, and multiple barriers to treatment that often preclude the regular attendance and engagement required in typical therapy protocols. The significant challenges faced by IPV survivors needing treatment may be ameliorated by condensing effective treatments for PTSD, such as cognitive processing therapy (CPT), in an accelerated delivery timeline.
METHOD: Using a multiple subject, single case design of six matched pai

IMPORTANCE: Sexual assault is a public health concern for women and is associated with subsequent psychosocial health risks of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), hazardous drinking, and intimate partner violence (IPV). Sexual assault is associated with social stigma and other barriers shown to inhibit one from seeking mental health care. Digital health technologies may overcome these barriers.
OBJECTIVE: To test the impact of a brief computerized intervention delivered in primary care to reduce health risks and increase mental health treatment utilization among women with histories of sexu

Caregivers and children often diverge in their reports of children's trauma-related symptoms, and this discordance has been linked with children's behavioral difficulties and poorer treatment outcomes. Knowledge regarding what factors may be related to discordance is limited, and maternal support in relation to trauma-related symptom agreement has yet to be investigated. The aim of the present study was to examine the associations between discordance and both maternal emotional support and blame/doubt in caregivers' and children's reports of trauma-related symptoms in sexually abused children.

Background: The transition to adulthood is a period of increased risk for emergent psychopathology; emerging adults with a childhood maltreatment history are at risk for poor outcomes. Method: Using a multi-measure, transdisciplinary, cross-sectional design, this study tested whether participant-reported positive parenting, a potential resilience-promoting factor, moderated the association between clinician-rated PTSD symptom severity and a transdiagnostic maladjustment biomarker, fear-potentiated startle (FPS), in a sample of 66 emerging adults (Myears = 18.83, SD = 0.89) with a maltreatment

Nightmares can be a distressing symptom in patients living with serious illness. Prazosin, a selective alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist, has been suggested to treat nightmares, with most data supporting its use in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We present the case of a 60-year-old woman with metastatic breast cancer who experienced healthcare-associated nightmares following hospitalisation. She did not meet diagnostic criteria for PTSD. Atypical antipsychotics and benzodiazepines were ineffective in controlling her nightmares, resulting in referral to our outpatient palliative medicine cl

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified functional brain abnormalities in pediatric posttraumatic stress disorder (pPTSD) suggesting altered frontoparietal-subcortical function during emotion processing. However, little is known about how the brain functionally changes over time in recovery versus the persistence of pPTSD.
METHODS: This longitudinal study recruited 23 youth with PTSD and 28 typically developing (TD) youth (ages: 8.07-17.99). Within the PTSD group, nine remitted by the 1-year follow-up (Remit) while the remaining 14 persisted (PTSD). At each visit, youth completed an emot

Identifying trauma-related symptoms is important for treatment planning at child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS), and routine trauma screening may be a first step to ensure appropriate treatment. Studies with community samples have found modest agreement between children's and caregivers´ report of exposure to potentially traumatizing events (PTEs). However, studies from clinical populations are scarce and the evidence base for screening recommendations is insufficient. The current study explores child and caregiver agreement on the child's exposure to PTEs and its relationship w
