Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heterogenous group of inherited conditions arising from a variety of biochemical and morphological collagen defects. We report 2 cases with a clinical diagnosis of OI. The first case was classified as Silence type IIA. He was delivered at 38 weeks' gestation with severe bowing of long bones, blue sclera and craniotabes at birth. Radiographs showed severe generalized osteoporosis, broad and crumpled long bones, beading ribs and poorly mineralized skull. The features of three babies with lethal perinatal osteogenesis imperfecta resulting from the substitution of glycine by arginine in the pro alpha 1(I) chain of type I procollagen were studied. The symphysis pubis is a nonsynovial amphiarthrodial joint that is situated at the confluence of the two pubic bones. A thick intrapubic fibrocartilaginous disc is sandwiched between thin layers of hyaline cartilage. The inferior pubic ligament provides most of the joint's stability. Anatomic sections demonstrate a symphysis by the end of the second month of gestation. Thick cartilaginous end-plates are present at birth but become thin by the time of skeletal maturity. Congenital diseases resulting in failure of symphysis formation include exstrophy of the bladder and cleidocranial dysostosis.

Cultured human alveolar macrophages (HAM phi) were found to produce soluble factors which inhibit tritiated thymidine [( 3H]-TdR) incorporation into tumour cells in vitro. We present evidence that thymidine (TdR) can be detected in HAM phi culture supernatants by thin-layer chromatography. Moreover, TdR secretion by HAM phi is an active process. Using [6-14C]-orotic acid as an early precursor to TdR and [3H]-TMP as the phosphorylation product, we were able to show that cultured HAM phi transformed them into labelled TdR. A 53-year-old male presented with a nine-year slowly enlarging cystic nodule. Bronchoscopy visualised a protruding lesion, and a biopsy resulted in purulent drainage. This case highlights that lung abscess can mimic lung cancer by presenting as a slowly enlarging nodule and may be treatable using an ultra-thin bronchoscope.

Unique radiologic features of Ask-Upmark kidney were reported. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed lobulated cortical thinning. Renal dimercaptosuccinic acid scan revealed isolated circular accumulations mimicking accessory kidneys. Our case indicates that the pathogenesis of this condition is most likely related to developmental anomalies.

Accessory peritoneal sac and cystoduodenal ligament as peritoneal variations were observed in a cadaver in our laboratory. Slender stomach, thin transverse colon, redundant sigmoid colon, absent ascending colon and doubly distended gall bladder were also reported in the same cadaver. A blue-and-gold macaw (Ara ararauna) was presented with a history of vomiting and production of small amounts of thin feces. A diagnosis of partial obstructive ileus was made following an oral barium-contrast study of the alimentary canal. The ileus proved to be the result of an adhesion of an intestinal loop to the abdominal wall and was successfully corrected by surgical intervention.

The technique for using the temporoparietal fascial flap in head and neck reconstruction is described. The advantages and applications of this flap are discussed and illustrated with case reports. Donor site morbidity is discussed, and the details of flap harvesting are reviewed. We have found the flap to be useful in the reconstruction of a variety of defects that require thin, vascular, and durable coverage.
