Functional evaluation of hidden figures object analysis in children with autistic disorder.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during performance of a hidden figures task (HFT) was used to compare differences in brain function in children diagnosed with autism disorder (AD) compared to children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and typical controls (TC). Overall greater functional MRI activity was observed in the two control groups compared to children with AD. Laterality differences were also evident, with AD subjects preferentially showing activity in the right medial temporal region while controls tended to activate the left medial temporal cortex. Red

Obligatory cortical auditory evoked potential waveform detection and differentiation using a commercially available clinical system: HEARLab™.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate detection and differentiation of obligatory cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) in normal-hearing listeners with and without a simulated conductive hearing impairment using the HEARLab™. DESIGN: Sound field CAEPs were obtained from 24 normal-hearing adults, with and without earplugs, using three natural speech sounds (/m/, /g/, and /t/) presented at 55, 65, and 75 dB SPL. RESULTS: Response detection was good except for the lowest presentation level; however, differentiation of waveforms was generally poor for individual listeners. CONCLUSIONS: W

Selective attention modulates face-specific induced gamma oscillations recorded from ventral occipitotemporal cortex.

EEG studies from subdural electrodes have demonstrated a face-specific event-related potential (face-N200) recorded from human ventral occipitotemporal cortex. The insensitivity of face-N200 to task manipulations has supported the proposal that face-N200 reflects an initial obligatory response to faces. This result stands in striking contrast to results of neuroimaging studies that have demonstrated strong task sensitivity of the fusiform hemodynamic response evoked by faces, and thus has created a paradox in the face perception literature. We recorded field potentials directly from the cortic

Never mind the spider: late positive potentials to phobic threat at fixation are unaffected by perceptual load.

Research suggests that processing of emotional stimuli may be eliminated if a concurrent task places sufficient demands on attentional resources. To test whether this holds for stimuli with strong emotional significance, pictures of spiders as well as mushrooms were presented at fixation to spider-fearful and non-fearful participants. Concurrently, perceptual load was manipulated in two levels with a peripheral letter discrimination task. Results of event-related potentials showed that, compared with non-fearful participants, spider-fearful participants showed greater late positive potentials

Selective lesions of the dorsomedial striatum impair serial spatial reversal learning in rats.

Impairments in reversal learning have been attributed to orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) dysfunction in many species. However, the role of subcortical areas interconnected with the OFC such as the striatum remains poorly understood. This study directly evaluated the contribution of core and shell sub-regions of the nucleus accumbens (NAc), dorsomedial (DMS) and dorsolateral (DLS) striatum to reversal learning of an instrumental two-lever spatial discrimination task in rats. Selective NAc core, DMS and DLS lesions were achieved with microinjections of quinolinic acid and NAc shell lesions with ibote

The role of medial temporal lobe in retrieving spatial and nonspatial relations from episodic and semantic memory.

This study examined the involvement of medial temporal lobe, especially the hippocampus, in processing spatial and nonspatial relations using episodic and semantic versions of a relational judgment task. Participants studied object arrays and were tested on different types of relations between pairs of objects. Three prevalent views of hippocampal function were considered. Cognitive map theory (O'Keefe and Nadel (1978) The Hippocampus as a Cognitive Map. USA: Oxford University Press) emphasizes hippocampal involvement in spatial relational tasks. Multiple trace theory (Nadel and Moscovitch (19

Somatosensory-evoked cortical activity in spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.

Somatosensory deficits have been identified in cerebral palsy (CP), but associated cortical brain activity in CP remains poorly understood. Functional MRI was used to measure blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) responses during three tactile tasks in 10 participants with spastic diplegia (mean age: 18.70 years, SD: 7.99 years; 5 females) and 10 age-matched controls (mean age: 18.60 years, SD: 3.86 years; 5 females). Tactile stimulation involved servo-controlled translation of smooth or embossed surfaces across the right index finger pad; the discrimination tasks with embossed surfaces inv

Investigation of mentalizing and visuospatial perspective taking for self and other in Asperger syndrome.

Mentalizing refers to making inferences about other people's mental states, whereas visuospatial perspective taking refers to inferring other people's viewpoints. Both abilities seem vital for social functioning; yet, their exact relationship is unclear. We directly compared mentalizing and visuospatial perspective taking in nineteen adults with Asperger syndrome (AS) and fifteen control participants with the same stimulus material. Stimuli depicted virtual characters surrounded by two different objects. Virtual characters expressed a preference for one of the objects indicated by facial expre

Resistance to change within heterogeneous response sequences.

Three experiments investigated how instrumental and Pavlovian contingencies contribute to resistance to change (RTC) in different ordinal response positions within heterogeneous response sequences in pigeons. RTC in the initial and terminal response positions of a three-response sequence were compared in Experiment 1, which presented three colored key lights in succession in each trial; and in Experiment 2, which severely degraded Pavlovian contingencies by presenting the lights simultaneously at each ordinal position. Experiment 3 eliminated the instrumental contingency in a high-order sign-t

Speaker normalization using cortical strip maps: a neural model for steady-state vowel categorization.

Auditory signals of speech are speaker dependent, but representations of language meaning are speaker independent. The transformation from speaker-dependent to speaker-independent language representations enables speech to be learned and understood from different speakers. A neural model is presented that performs speaker normalization to generate a pitch-independent representation of speech sounds, while also preserving information about speaker identity. This speaker-invariant representation is categorized into unitized speech items, which input to sequential working memories whose distribut

Phonological working memory in German children with poor reading and spelling abilities.

Deficits in verbal short-term memory have been identified as one factor underlying reading and spelling disorders. However, the nature of this deficit is still unclear. It has been proposed that poor readers make less use of phonological coding, especially if the task can be solved through visual strategies. In the framework of Baddeley's phonological loop model, this study examined serial recall performance in German second-grade children with poor vs good reading and spelling abilities. Children were presented with four-item lists of common nouns for immediate serial recall. Word length and

Performance on figure ground perception following stroke induced hemiplegia: a compairson of pre-and post-rehabilitation with the neurologically unimpaired.

This article compares performance times on the Figure Ground Perception (FGP) of the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT) in persons with stroke-induced hemiplegia and unimpaired older persons. Two hundred and twelve right dominant persons with hemiplegia on admission and discharge from comprehensive rehabilitation and 321 neurologically unimpaired persons in the community were evaluated on the FGP subtests of the SIPT. There were significant differences in performance between unimpaired persons and those with hemiplegia following a stroke. Among the persons with stroke-induced hemipleg

Change in hearing during 'wait and scan' management of patients with vestibular schwannoma.

AIM: To evaluate hearing changes during 'wait and scan' management of patients with vestibular schwannoma. SUBJECTS: Over a 10-year period, 636 patients have prospectively been allocated to 'wait and scan' management, with annual magnetic resonance scanning and audiological examination. RESULTS: At the time of diagnosis, 334 patients (53 per cent) had good hearing and speech discrimination of better than 70 per cent; at the end of the 10-year observation period, this latter percentage was 31 per cent. In 17 per cent of the patients, speech discrimination at diagnosis was 100 per cent; of the

Effects of alcohol on the processing of social threat-related stimuli in socially phobic women.

BACKGROUND: Social phobics are at a higher risk of developing alcohol problems. The mechanism promoting this association is not clear. According to Sayette (1993b), alcohol attenuates anxiety responses by disrupting initial appraisal of threatening stimuli. We used the emotional Stroop test and an implicit memory test to investigate whether alcohol hinders appraisal of social threat words in patients diagnosed with social phobia. PROCEDURE: Thirty-two women with social phobia (DSM-IV) and 32 female controls performed an emotional Stroop test either after drinking alcohol resulting in a blood

Temporal processing deficits in Hebrew speaking children with reading disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to assess to what extent specific reading disabilities and poor phonologic processing in children who read Hebrew, a primarily consonant orthography, are related to central auditory temporal processing deficits (TPDs).Twenty-four Hebrew-speaking children (ages 10-13) with and without reading disabilities were asked to discriminate auditorily pairs of syllables (/ba/ vs. /pa/) that differ by voice onset time (VOT) only. Two paradigms were used, 1 with a short interstimulus interval (ISI) (50 ms) and 1 with a long ISI (500 ms). Event-related potentials (ERPs) were m

Social-emotion recognition in borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by interpersonal disturbances, but the neurocognitive aspects of these symptoms are poorly understood. We hypothesized that patients with BPD have impaired perception of emotional expressions, which are related to symptoms of interpersonal dysfunction. To control potential confounding factors, this study excluded subjects with comorbid diagnoses known to be associated with impaired affect perception. We tested 43 outpatients with BPD and 26 healthy controls on emotion recognition tasks (facial, prosodic, and integrated facial/prosodic), no

Women and men exhibit different cortical activation patterns during mental rotation tasks.

The strongest sex differences on any cognitive task, favoring men, are found for tasks that require the mental rotation of three-dimensional objects. A number of studies have explored functional brain activation during mental rotation tasks, and sex differences have been noted in some. However, in these studies there was a substantial confounding factor because male and female subjects differed in overall performance levels. In contrast, our functional brain activation study examined cortical activation patterns for males and females who did not differ in overall level of performance on three

Two components of transducer adaptation in auditory hair cells.

Mechanoelectrical transducer currents in turtle auditory hair cells adapted to maintained stimuli via a Ca(2+)-dependent mechanism characterized by two time constants of approximately 1 and 15 ms. The time course of adaptation slowed as the stimulus intensity was raised because of an increased prominence of the second component. The fast component of adaptation had a similar time constant for both positive and negative displacements and was unaffected by the myosin ATPase inhibitors, vanadate and butanedione monoxime. Adaptation was modeled by a scheme in which Ca(2+) ions, entering through op

Speech, cognition, and imaging studies in congenital ocular motor apraxia.

Detailed neurological, speech and language, psychological, and neuroimaging studies were carried out in eight children with the diagnosis of congenital ocular motor apraxia. The neurological examination showed clinical evidence of cerebellar vermis abnormality (hypotonia and truncal ataxia) in all cases. Neuroimaging studies suggested that the site of neuropathological disturbance of congenital ocular motor apraxia was the inferior vermis. Half of the subjects had associated speech apraxia. The most likely location of brain disturbance, which was responsible for the speech apraxia, was also an

Contrast detection, discrimination and adaptation in patients with Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy.

Visual spatial contrast thresholds and suprathreshold contrast matches were measured before and after adaptation to high-contrast sinewave gratings in patients with Parkinson's disease (n = 27), patients with multiple system atrophy (n = 6) and a group of age-matched control patients without CNS disease (n = 27). Contrast thresholds were higher in the Parkinson's disease patients than in either the multiple system atrophy patients or control patients. The effect of contrast adaptation on both contrast thresholds and matches was approximately equal in the three groups. This suggests that contra
