Algerian postcaesarean surgical site infections: A cross-sectional investigation of the epidemiology, bacteriology, and antibiotic resistance profile.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are one of the most common health care-associated infections in low and middle-income countries. The aims of this cross-sectional descriptive study were to estimate the frequency of postcaesarean infection with associated clinical characteristics and the antibiotic resistance profile of bacterial isolates. METHODS: Patients who underwent a cesarean section at the obstetrics and gynecology department of the hospital in Annaba, Algeria were included. Each woman was followed postoperatively for 30 days and sociodemographic data were collected. Culture-

Listeria monocytogenes Isolates from Meat Products and Processing Environment in Poland Are Sensitive to Commonly Used Antibiotics, with Rare Cases of Reduced Sensitivity to Ciprofloxacin.

Antibiotic resistance is a global health problem, causing not only an increased mortality rate of bacterial infections but also economic losses due to, among other reasons, the need for longer hospital stays. Listeria monocytogenes is one of the foodborne pathogens with the ability to induce a serious illness called listeriosis, with approximately 20-30% fatal outcomes. The treatment regimen of listeriosis in humans includes the administration of antibiotics (in most cases, ampicillin or trimethoprim with sulfamethoxazole in case of allergies to β-lactams), so the resistance of this pathogen t

Distribution and Characterization of Staphylococci Isolated From Healthy Canine Skin.

Despite increasing interest to study skin microbiota with progressive methods, there are almost no data on staphylococcal species distribution on skin of healthy dogs available. Therefore we decide to characterize staphylococci isolated from 8 different body sites (inner pinna, chin, nasal skin, back, axilla, abdomen, interdigital area and perianal region) of healthy canine skin. A total of 91 staphylococci were isolated from 30 dogs living in East Slovakia. Swabs of each dog were cultivated and colonies analysed using MALDI-TOF spectrometry. The vast majority of isolated staphylococci belonge

Bloodstream Infections in Children With Cancer: Pathogen Distribution and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns Over a 10-Year Period.

Bloodstream infections (BSIs) adversely affect clinical outcome in children with cancer. Over 1 decade, this retrospective cohort study describes pathogen distribution in BSIs and antimicrobial susceptibility against empirical antibiotics frequently prescribed in children with cancer. The antibiotic efficacy was evaluated through the determination of minimal inhibitory concentrations for piperacillin-tazobactam and meropenem and by disk diffusion for remaining antibiotics. From 2004 to 2013, 398 BSIs occurred in 196 children with cancer (median age: 5.4 y), resulting in 457 bacteria. Overall,

In Vitro Activity of Tedizolid in Comparison with Other Oral and Intravenous Agents Against a Collection of Community-Acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (2014-2015) in the United States.

Tedizolid activity was compared with other agents with oral and intravenous formulations against community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA). Tedizolid (MIC50/90, 0.12/0.12 mg/L; 100.0% susceptible) was the most potent agent tested against CA-MRSA and subsets from adult and pediatric patients. Tedizolid minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were twofold to fourfold lower than daptomycin (MIC50/90, 0.25/0.5 mg/L; 99.9-100% susceptible) and fourfold to eightfold lower than linezolid (MIC50/90, 1/1 mg/L; 100.0% susceptible), ceftaroline (MIC50/90, 0.5-1/1 mg/L; 96.

Comparative genome analysis reveals key genetic factors associated with probiotic property in Enterococcus faecium strains.

BACKGROUND: Enterococcus faecium though commensal in the human gut, few strains provide a beneficial effect to humans as probiotics while few are responsible for the nosocomial infection. Comparative genomics of E. faecium can decipher the genomic differences responsible for probiotic, pathogenic and non-pathogenic properties. In this study, we compared E. faecium strain 17OM39 with a marketed probiotic, non-pathogenic non-probiotic (NPNP) and pathogenic strains. RESULTS: E. faecium 17OM39 was found to be closely related with marketed probiotic strain T110 based on core genome analysis. Strai

Evaluation of colonization with multidrug-resistant microorganisms and the incidence of attributable infections in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The global rise in multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) has led to an increased incidence of MDRO infections following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), particularly during the preengraftment period. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between pretransplant colonization by MDROs or carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) and the occurrence of infections caused by phenotypically similar microorganisms during the preengraftment period, as well as to assess the clinical outcomes of patients colonized with MDROs prior to transplantation.

Xpert Carba-R assay for detection of carbapenemase-producing organisms in patients admitted to emergency rooms.

Carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPO) have been identified as an urgent healthcare threat. Various methods have been used for the detection of CPO using rectal swabs. Recently, an on-demand polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, namely, the Xpert Carba-R assay, that requires less than an hour of turnaround time, had been developed for CPO detection in clinical samples. This study focused on the use of this assay to determine the intestinal colonization rate of CPO in patients admitted to emergency rooms (ERs).A retrospective review of medical records was conducted at a tertiary hospital betw

Extreme variability in linezolid concentrations in the ICU: A case for routine therapeutic drug monitoring.

PURPOSE: Linezolid is an essential antimicrobial for treating multidrug-resistant gram-positive infections in critically ill patients. However, its pharmacokinetics (PK) are highly variable, potentially leading to subtherapeutic exposure or toxicity. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) plays a critical role in guiding individualized dosing. SUMMARY: We describe a 66-year-old intensive care unit (ICU) patient treated with linezolid for vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) peritonitis and empyema. Despite standard dosing (600 mg IV every 12 hours), linezolid concentrations remained bel
