Significance of cytodiagnosis in primary carcinoid tumor of the middle ear: A case report.

Primary carcinoid tumors of the middle ear are uncommon. Cytodiagnosis of the middle ear is not usually performed as a preoperative examination because of the anatomical structure of the middle ear. To the best of our knowledge, the present study reports for the first time a case of a carcinoid tumor of the middle ear, which was preoperatively diagnosed using cytodiagnosis, and also review current literature. A 22-year-old woman complained of left-sided otalgia. A subcutaneous tumor in the left middle ear was observed. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed that the tumor was primarily present in

Dynamic Properties of Human Tympanic Membrane After Exposure to Blast Waves.

Blast overpressure causes dynamic damage to middle ear components, and tympanic membrane (TM) rupture is the most frequent middle ear injury. However, it is unclear how the blast waves change mechanical properties of the TM and affect sound transmission through the ear. This paper reports the current study on dynamic properties of the TM after exposure to blast waves by using acoustic loading and laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV). The TM specimens were prepared from human temporal bones following exposures to blast overpressure. Vibration of the TM specimen induced by acoustic loading was measure

Dual targeting improves capture of ultrasound microbubbles towards activated platelets but yields no additional benefit for imaging of arterial thrombosis.

Platelets can be found on the surface of inflamed and ruptured atherosclerotic plaques. Thus, targeting of activated platelets may allow for molecular imaging of vulnerable atherosclerotic lesions. We here investigated microbubbles (MB) functionalized with the selectin ligand sialyl Lewisa individually (MBsLea) or dually with sLea and an antibody targeting ligand-induced binding sites of the activated GPIIb/IIIa receptor (MBDual). Assessed by in vitro flow chamber, targeted MB exhibited increased adhesion to platelets as compared to MBControl. While MBsLea rolled slowly on the platelets' surfa

Hearing disorder from music; a neglected dysfunction.

CONCLUSION: Music-induced acute acoustic trauma is not inevitably linked to hearing dysfunction as validated by conventional pure tone audiometry. Tinnitus is often in combination with hyperacusis. Our results point at 'silent hearing loss' as the underlying pathology, having afferent nerve terminal damage rather than hair cell loss as the structural correlate. OBJECTIVES: Exposure to loud music is one of the most common causes of acute acoustic trauma, which adolescents and teenagers experience by voluntary exposure to loud music of sound levels up to 110 dB(A). METHODS: The clinical and ps

Proof of Concept of a Tracheoesophageal Voice Prosthesis Insufflator for Speech Production After Total Laryngectomy.

IMPORTANCE: There may have a variety of reasons why patients are unable to produce tracheoesophageal speech after total laryngectomy (TL) including poor pulmonary reserve or other comorbidities that prevent adequate stoma occlusion and intratracheal pressure to voice. Other patients find it difficult, uncomfortable, or socially awkward to manually occlude the stoma with the finger or thumb. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the feasibility of achieving TE speech with a prototype TE voice prosthesis insufflator (TEVPI). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We prospectively assessed the feasi

Sophono Alpha System and subtotal petrosectomy with external auditory canal blind sac closure.

Recently, a new acoustic device, the so-called Sophono Alpha System, has been introduced into clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess Sophono Alpha System hearing aids in ten patients suffering from recurrent chronic middle ear disease who underwent subtotal petrosectomy. Presence of mixed hearing loss with bone conduction thresholds better than or equal to 45 dB was present in each patient. Audiometric tests were performed before and after Sophono implantation and using a conventional bone conduction hearing aid (hearing glasses). Speech audiometry data (speech recognition thre

Multi-point accelerometric detection and principal component analysis of heart sounds.

Heart sounds are a fundamental physiological variable that provide a unique insight into cardiac semiotics. However a deterministic and unambiguous association between noises in cardiac dynamics is far from being accomplished yet due to many and different overlapping events which contribute to the acoustic emission. The current computer-based capacities in terms of signal detection and processing allow one to move from the standard cardiac auscultation, even in its improved forms like electronic stethoscopes or hi-tech phonocardiography, to the extraction of information on the cardiac activity

Mutation of Foxo3 causes adult onset auditory neuropathy and alters cochlear synapse architecture in mice.

Auditory neuropathy is a form of hearing loss in which cochlear inner hair cells fail to correctly encode or transmit acoustic information to the brain. Few genes have been implicated in the adult-onset form of this disease. Here we show that mice lacking the transcription factor Foxo3 have adult onset hearing loss with the hallmark characteristics of auditory neuropathy, namely, elevated auditory thresholds combined with normal outer hair cell function. Using histological techniques, we demonstrate that Foxo3-dependent hearing loss is not due to a loss of cochlear hair cells or spiral ganglio

Modeling within- and across-channel processes in comodulation masking release.

The relative contributions of within-channel and across-channel processes to perceptual comodulation masking release (CMR) were investigated in the framework of an auditory processing model. A generalized version of the computational auditory signal processing and perception model [CASP; Jepsen et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 124, 422-438 (2008)] was used and extended by an across-channel modulation processing stage according to Piechowiak et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 121, 2111-2126 (2007)]. Five experimental paradigms were considered: CMR with a broadband noise masker as a function of the masker s

Evidence that ship noise increases stress in right whales.

Baleen whales (Mysticeti) communicate using low-frequency acoustic signals. These long-wavelength sounds can be detected over hundreds of kilometres, potentially allowing contact over large distances. Low-frequency noise from large ships (20-200 Hz) overlaps acoustic signals used by baleen whales, and increased levels of underwater noise have been documented in areas with high shipping traffic. Reported responses of whales to increased noise include: habitat displacement, behavioural changes and alterations in the intensity, frequency and intervals of calls. However, it has been unclear whethe

Analysis of phonocardiogram signals using wavelet transform.

Phonocardiograms (PCG) are recordings of the acoustic waves produced by the mechanical action of the heart. They generally consist of two kinds of acoustic vibrations: heart sounds and heart murmurs. Heart murmurs are often the first signs of pathological changes of the heart valves, and are usually found during auscultation in primary health care. Heart auscultation has been recognized for a long time as an important tool for the diagnosis of heart disease, although its accuracy is still insufficient to diagnose some heart diseases. It does not enable the analyst to obtain both qualitative an

Kinematics of phonotactic steering in the walking cricket Gryllus bimaculatus (de Geer).

Female crickets, Gryllus bimaculatus, are attracted by the male calling song and approach singing males; a behaviour known as phonotaxis. Even tethered females walking on a trackball steer towards a computer-generated male song presented from their left or right side. High-speed video analysis showed how this auditory-evoked steering was integrated with walking. Typically all the front and middle legs showed kinematic adjustments during steering, with the trajectories tilted towards the side of acoustic stimulation. Furthermore, the average speed of the tarsi contralateral to song increased re

Auditory spatial and object processing in the human planum temporale: no evidence for selectivity.

Although it is generally acknowledged that at least two processing streams exist in the primate cortical auditory system, the function of the posterior dorsal stream is a topic of much debate. Recent studies have reported selective activation to auditory spatial change in portions of the human planum temporale (PT) relative to nonspatial stimuli such as pitch changes or complex acoustic patterns. However, previous work has suggested that the PT may be sensitive to another kind of nonspatial variable, namely, the number of auditory objects simultaneously presented in the acoustic signal. The go
