Conversion therapies and access to transition-related healthcare in transgender people: a narrative systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Conversion is a term for treatments that seek to suppress or change a person's sexual orientation or gender. Our review focuses on transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people. Our aims were to (1) describe the frequency, nature and structure of conversion practices; (2) document difficulties in accessing transition-related healthcare and (3) evaluate the mental health consequences of such practices and access barriers. METHOD: Systematic review and narrative synthesis using the Critical Appraisals Skills Programme and Joanne Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Data sources

Normal motor adaptation in cervical dystonia: a fundamental cerebellar computation is intact.

The potential role of the cerebellum in the pathophysiology of dystonia has become a focus of recent research. However, direct evidence for a cerebellar contribution in humans with dystonia is difficult to obtain. We examined motor adaptation, a test of cerebellar function, in 20 subjects with primary cervical dystonia and an equal number of aged matched controls. Adaptation to both visuomotor (distorting visual feedback by 30°) and forcefield (applying a velocity-dependent force) conditions were tested. Our hypothesis was that cerebellar abnormalities observed in dystonia research would trans

A report of behavioral data on three groups of patients with craniofacial disorders.

Longitudinal follow-up data on development and school placement are presented for three groups of patients. Having had or not having had early surgical intervention and stimulation distinguishes the two groups of patients with craniosynostosis. The third group is patients with cleft lip and palate who received early intervention but did not achieve minimal criteria for communication by age 22 months. Educational placement (for patients 8 to 20 years of age) follows the pattern of distribution of students nationally for patients who had early intervention.

An opportunistic qualitative evaluation of the acceptability and feasibility of remote cognitive behavioral group intervention for bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many mental health services had to adapt the way in which their services were delivered. Research exploring the effectiveness of remote therapy and interventions, especially within the bipolar disorder population, is lacking. The pandemic presented an opportunity to conduct an opportunistic evaluation of a group CBT intervention for bipolar disorder which began face-to-face and transitioned to remote delivery. Service users had a unique experience of having experienced both delivery methods during the same intervention. The intervention had n

Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction and Psychological Distress Affect Dietary Behavior: Italian Data From the Worldwide Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) are highly prevalent and frequently associated with psychological distress and meal-related symptoms. While the habitual Italian diet is Mediterranean and nutritionally protective, its high content of fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) may exacerbate gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort in susceptible individuals. The extent to which DGBI and psychological distress are associated with real-world dietary behavior remains unclear. METHODS: Data from the Italian arm of the Rome Foundation Global Epi

A Mobile-Based Mindfulness Intervention for Reducing Demoralization in Patients on Maintenance Hemodialysis: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with end-stage renal disease receiving maintenance hemodialysis experience a substantial symptom burden, and demoralization syndrome-characterized by helplessness, hopelessness, and loss of meaning-is highly prevalent and strongly associated with impaired quality of life. However, the psychological mechanisms linking symptom burden to demoralization remain poorly understood, and scalable, evidence-based interventions targeting demoralization in this population are limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) examine the mechanisms linking symptom burden to demoralization t

The relationship between pain catastrophizing and cognitive frailty in patients with lumbar disc herniation mediated by sleep quality: the regulatory effect of emotions- a retrospective study.

PURPOSE: To explore how pain catastrophizing affects cognitive frailty in patients with lumbar disc herniation, and to analyze the mediating roles of sleep quality and the mitigating effect of emotional adaptability. METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted from July 2023 to August 2024, including 120 lumbar disc herniation patients that were divided into the cognitive frailty group (34 cases) and the non-cognitive frailty group (86 cases). Binary Logistic regression was used to screen the factors influencing cognitive frailty. Mediation and mitigation analyses were conducted using t

App supporting surveillance for (likely) pathogenic TP53 variant carriers: acceptance among a German cohort.

The rapid digitalization of healthcare is transforming medical care strategies. Individuals carrying (likely) pathogenic TP53 germline variants (P/LP TP53) require complex surveillance protocols. To support these individuals, we provided the adapted PatientConcept app to adults with a P/LP TP53 variant and their relatives. We analyzed the value of this adapted app for this cohort, as well as general aspects of Internet use, web-based healthcare options, mental and physical health, and fear of progression. (FOP). From a larger study consisting of 70 carriers and 43 relatives, 25 affected indivi

Restricted and repetitive behaviors in autism spectrum disorders: a review of research in the last decade.

Restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) are a core feature of autism spectrum disorders. They constitute a major barrier to learning and social adaptation, but research on their definition, cause, and capacity for change has been relatively neglected. The last decade of research has brought new measurement techniques that have improved the description of RRBs. Research has also identified distinctive subtypes of RRBs in autism spectrum disorders. Research on potential causal origins and immediate triggers for RRBs is still at an early stage. However, promising new ideas and evidence are eme

Does rheumatoid arthritis represent an adaptive, thrifty condition?

The present article presents epidemiological, and comparative evidence supporting the hypothesis that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may represent a thrifty adaptation selected to compel animals to minimize voluntary energy expenditure. The autoimmune, pathophysiological manifestations underlying RA are framed here as constituting an evolved, protective mechanism that would have influenced animals to avoid exertion and maintain a sedentary lifestyle in order to minimize metabolic output and ultimately escape starvation. Arthritic pain is characterized here as a defensive, innate signal much like fa

Novel Definitions of Wellness and Distress among Family Caregivers of Patients with Acute Cardiorespiratory Failure: A Qualitative Study.

Rationale: Family caregivers of patients with acute cardiorespiratory failure are at high risk for distress, which is typically defined as the presence of psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, or posttraumatic stress. Interventions to reduce caregiver distress and increase wellness have been largely ineffective to date. An incomplete understanding of caregiver wellness and distress may hinder efforts at developing effective support interventions. Objectives: To allow family caregivers to define their experiences of wellness and distress 6 months after patient intensive care unit

Perspective Taking Ability in Psychologically Maltreated Children: A Protective Factor in Peer Social Adjustment.

Perspective taking is conceptualized as a multidimensional construct characterized by three components: cognitive, affective, and visual. The experience of psychological maltreatment impairs the child's emotional competence; in particular, maltreated children present difficulty in understanding and regulating emotions and in social understanding ability. In addition, the literature contains several contributions that highlight maladaptive behaviors of children with a history of maltreatment in peer interactions in the school context. Perspective taking ability has rarely been studied in maltre

Assessment of Psychopatologic Traits in a Group of Patients with Adult Chronic Periodontitis: Study on 108 Cases and Analysis of Compliance during and after Periodontal Treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Although there is nowadays wide agreement on bacteria being the main etiologic agents of periodontal disease, their sole presence cannot damage periodontal tissues in all subjects. This suggests that an individual response and an adaptation to a certain quantity of bacterial biofilm can occur without the disease progressing and vice versa. Depression, stress and anxiety have not been confirmed yet as risk conditions but, in some observational studies, they have been identified as potential risk factors of periodontal disease. The current study aims at investigating the role which t

Emotion recognition and human-robot interaction: a systematic review of methods and applications.

Physical human-robot interaction involves a tightly coupled cognitive interaction with the user. The emotional state of the user is therefore a key factor influencing engagement, motivation, and long-term acceptance. This review explores recent developments in emotion-aware technologies, particularly facial expression recognition and multimodal affect detection, and their potential to make assistive robots more adaptive and human-centred. By analysing current methodologies, emerging trends, and ethical considerations, we show how the integration of emotional intelligence can transform robotic

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Eating Disorders.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) conceptualizes eating disorders (EDs) as rigid attempts to solve the problem of human suffering through food, eating or weight control. Case formulation and intervention is based on functional assessment of ED behaviors and informed by common patterns of psychological flexibility observed across dimensions of cognition, emotion, self, motivation, and overt action. ACT interventions, combined with other evidence-based practices for EDs, can be used to disrupt ED behaviors and increase the individual's capacity to meet their physical and emotional needs ad

The role of adverse childhood experiences in cardiovascular disease risk: a review with emphasis on plausible mechanisms.

Childhood adversity, characterized by abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, is a problem that exerts a significant impact on individuals, families, and society. Growing evidence suggests that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with health decline in adulthood, including cardiovascular disease (CVD). In the current review, we first provide an overview of the association between ACEs and CVD risk, with updates on the latest epidemiological evidence. Second, we briefly review plausible pathways by which ACEs could influence CVD risk, including traditional risk factors and no
