A multimodal MRI study of the hippocampus in medication-naive children with ADHD: what connects ADHD and depression?

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk for developing depression. The neurobiological substrates that convey this risk remain poorly understood. On the basis of considerable data implicating hippocampal abnormalities in depressive disorders, we aimed to explore the relationship between the hippocampus and levels of depressive symptomatology in ADHD. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine the volumes and resting-state functional connectivity of the hippocampus in a sample of 32 medication naive children with ADHD (ages 6 - 13) and 33 age

Headache impairs attentional performance.

Attentional disruption has been demonstrated using laboratory-induced pain, but has not been reliably established in everyday pain conditions. This study is the first to examine the effect of everyday acute headache on attention. Seventy-five frequent headache sufferers completed a flanker task, n-back task, attentional switching task, and dual task. Participants completed this battery of tasks twice: once when experiencing an episode of tension-type headache, and once when pain free. Headache impaired performance on the n-back task, retarded general responding on the flanker task, and produce

A cognitive strategy instruction to improve math calculation for children with ADHD and LD: a randomized controlled study.

The authors examined the effectiveness of cognitive strategy instruction based on PASS (Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, Successive) given by special education teachers to students with ADHD randomly assigned by classroom. Students in the experimental group were exposed to a brief cognitive strategy instruction for 10 days, which was designed to encourage development and application of effective planning for mathematical computation, whereas the comparison group received-standard math instruction. Standardized tests of cognitive processes and math achievement were given at pretest. All stude

Behavioral and emotional symptoms of post-institutionalized children in middle childhood.

BACKGROUND: Experience in institutional/orphanage care has been linked to increased mental health problems. Research suggests that children adopted from institutions experience specific difficulties related to inattention/overactivity. Evidence of internalizing and conduct problems relative to non-adopted peers has been found in early childhood and early adolescence, but problems may not differ from other adopted children. This study clarifies the understanding of behavioral and emotional symptoms of post-institutionalized (PI) children during middle childhood. METHODS: Eight- to eleven-year-

The effect of hemisphere specific remediation strategies on the academic performance outcome of children with ADD/ADHD.

The development and normal function of the cerebrum is largely dependent on sub-cortical structures, such as the cerebellum and basal ganglia. Dysfunction in these areas can affect both the nonspecific arousal system and information transfer in the brain. Dysfunction of this sort often results in motor and sensory symptoms commonly seen in children with ADD/ADHD. These brain regions have been reported to be underactive, with that underactivity restricted to the right or left side of the sub-cortical and cortical regions. An imbalance of activity or arousal of one side of the cortex can result

[Electroencephalography in children with ADHD started with neurofeedback therapy].

BACKGROUND: ADHD is characterized by lack of attention and concentration, hyperactivity and impulsivity and occurrs in about 3-5% of school-age children. Analysis of EEG plays an important role in comprehending the character of disturbed brain processes. Nowadays significant predictive values of EEG in response to neurostimulation treatment are being looked for. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Visual analysis included results of standard EEG examination of 109 children who underwent neurofeedback treatment in the years 2007-2009. These children were at the age range from 6 to 17 years and boys were pre

How distinctive are ADHD and RD? Results of a double dissociation study.

The nature of the comorbidity between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Reading Disability (RD) was examined using a double dissociation design. Children were between 8 and 12 years of age and entered into four groups: ADHD only (n = 24), ADHD+RD (n = 29), RD only (n = 41) and normal controls (n = 26). In total, 120 children participated in the study; 38 girls and 82 boys. Both ADHD and RD were associated with impairments in inhibition and lexical decision, although inhibition and lexical decision were more severely impaired in RD than in ADHD. Visuospatial working memory def

Methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine-induced peripheral vasculopathy.

Methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine are central nervous system stimulants used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorders in children. These medications have been associated with cerebral arteritis, renal necrotizing vasculitis, and systemic and pulmonary hypertension. We report 4 patients, 2 on methylphenidate and 2 on dextroamphetamine who presented with acral cyanosis, livedo reticularis, or Raynaud phenomenon. Two patients were found to have a positive ANA at low titers, 1 of whom had histopathologic evidence of stratum malgiphian necrosis with perivascular lymphocytic

Attention deficits in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC): rethinking the pathways to the endstate.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disorder associated with a range of neurocognitive manifestations, including neuropsychological attention deficits most notably in dual tasking/divided attention. These dual-task deficits have so far been interpreted as evidence of a vulnerable 'cognitive module' in TSC. Here, we suggest that this interpretation represents an 'adult neuropsychological' perspective, and argue that a developmental approach would be more appropriate to examine attention deficits in TSC. METHOD: We examined the pathway to 'endstate' dual-task deficits in t

Correspondence of parent and teacher reports in medication trials.

Although much has been written about the agreement of parents and teachers regarding the diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), some uncertainty remains about their agreement when assessing change during drug treatment. To address this issue, we analyzed data from a placebo-controlled short-term study and an open-label long-term study of ADHD children treated with OROS methylphenidate (MPH). Both reporters agreed that OROS MPH was efficacious for symptoms of inattention/overactivity and oppositionality/defiance and that the effect was greater for inattention/overactivity

Maturation processes in automatic change detection as revealed by event-related brain potentials and dipole source localization: significance for adult AD/HD.

Mismatch negativity (MMN) is an event-related potential reflecting automatic attention-related information processing marking the detection of auditory change. The bilateral scalp distribution develops by 14 years of age, and is elicited with adult latencies by 17 years. But consistent with reports of continued brain maturation after adolescence, we show here that features of the temporal and frontal lobe dipole sources also continue to develop in the third decade of life. This has consequences for studies of the developmental course of MMN anomalies, from childhood into adulthood, in attentio

The long-term significance of teacher-rated hyperactivity and reading ability in childhood: findings from two longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were twofold: first, to examine behavioural and academic outcomes of children with hyperactivity, using data from two longitudinal studies; and second, to examine comparable psychosocial outcomes for children with early reading difficulties. METHODS: Measures of teacher-rated persistent hyperactivity, and reading ability obtained during early primary school were available for children from the Australian Temperament Project and the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study. Both samples were followed up to assess behavioural and academic outcome

Megalencephaly in NF1: predominantly white matter contribution and mitigation by ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Megalencephaly is a frequent CNS manifestation in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1); however, its tissue composition, modification by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and relationship with unidentified bright objects (UBO) remain controversial. METHODS: Eighteen male patients with NF1, seven of whom had ADHD (NF1+ADHD), were compared with 18 age- and sex-matched controls in terms of MRI-, Talairach-based brain, cerebral, lobar, and sublobar gray and white matter volumes. Twelve subjects with NF1 had UBO in the centrencephalic region, whereas six had no UBO or exclusiv

Card sorting performance and ADHD symptomatology in children and adolescents with tourette syndrome.

Children and adolescents with Tourette Syndrome (TS) do not have a characteristic neuropsychological profile. Performance on complex cognitive tasks, particularly those associated with executive functioning (EF), has been variable and sometimes contradictory. The high rate of comorbidity of TS with disorders, especially Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), may account for such variability. A group of 57 individuals with TS, aged 8 - 16, was examined on a component of executive functioning in relation to comorbid symptomatology of ADHD. Each participant was evaluated using two EF me
