Effects of demand and decision latitude on cardiovascular reactivity among coronary-prone women and men.

According to the Job Strain Model, high demand/low decision latitude jobs may be associated with increased risk of developing coronary heart disease. In further analyses of a laboratory study, the authors hypothesized that Type A behavior and/or hostility moderate the effects of demand, decision latitude, and gender on cardiovascular reactivity, a putative mechanism for the development of coronary disease. With multiple regressions, it was found that scores on the Framingham Type A scale interacted with demand and decision latitude to affect diastolic blood pressure changes, such that Type Bs

Coronary heart disease risk scales and reactivity in a prevention program assessment: failure to show positive relationships.

This study was designed to evaluate relationships among the Jenkins Activity Survey, the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale, and cardiovascular reactivity measured during a semistructured interview in a hospital setting. Subjects were 201 business persons participating in a cardiovascular risk assessment interview component of a fitness program. Correlation analysis showed little evidence of significant positive relationships between self-report scores and reactivity in the total sample and among subjects with high resting blood pressures. Graphic analysis of total sample bivariate distributions, how

Hostility: relationship to lifestyle behaviors and physical risk factors.

The relationship between hostility and coronary artery disease may be partially mediated by unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. This study examined the relationship between hostility, lifestyle behaviors, and physical risk factors in 138 adult men and women. Subjects completed the Cook and Medley Hostility Scale (Ho scale) and self-reports of their dietary habits, consumption of alcohol and cigarettes, and physical activity. Recent findings indicated that a composite hostility score from three rationally derived subscales of the Ho scale tapping the dimensions of cynicism, hostile affect, and aggre

The Type A belief system: relationships to hostility, social support, and life stress.

Certain core beliefs may underlie the Type A behavior pattern, predisposing individuals to health problems and impaired interpersonal relationships. Previous studies have revealed that the Type A Cognitive Questionnaire (TACQ), a self-report measure reflecting these beliefs, is indeed related to emotional distress. The current study assessed the TACQ's relationship to aspects of the interpersonal environment, including perceived social support and stressful events. It also investigated the TACQ's relationship to subtypes of hostility (ie, cynicism and paranoid alienation). Subjects were 111 co

Psychosocial and physiological correlates of male gender role stress among employed adults.

Previous research has identified male gender role stress (MGRS) as a construct that leads men, as a function of traditional socialization processes, to appraise certain situations in ways that produce psychosocial and physiological distress. Because the initial research was based on college undergraduates, the current study explored the relationship of MGRS to psychosocial and physiological risk factors for cardiovascular disease among employed adults. As predicted, men obtained significantly higher scores than women on a measure, the MGRS Scale, developed to assess this construct. Women with

Motivation patterns, self-esteem, and depression of patients after first myocardial infarction.

This study explored the relationship between dominance-achievement motivation and psychological adjustment of 53 patients after their first myocardial infarction. These two motivations are perceived as expressions of general tendency to "agency," or assertiveness. The following findings were observed: (1) High-agency subjects reported less depressive moods than low-agency subjects; there was no time effect on this difference between groups nor within each group separately. (2) the self-esteem of high-agency patients was high and stable, whereas that of low-agency subjects was lower and got low

Manifest hostility may affect habituation of cardiovascular reactivity in blacks.

In a study of cardiovascular reactivity to dietary manipulation of sodium and calcium, we pretested 30 young black normotensive males who were equally divided by positive and negative parental histories of hypertension with a 12-item anger questionnaire we devised and the Cook-Medley Hostility, Manifest Hostility, Overcontrolled Hostility, and Inhibited Hostility scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Contrary to expectations, we found no correlation of resting blood pressure or cardiovascular reactivity to repeated mental demands with the two measures of inhibited hostilit

The efficacy of the relaxation response in preparing for cardiac surgery.

This study evaluated the efficacy of the relaxation response on the post-operative recovery of 27 cardiac surgery patients randomly assigned to one of two groups. Thirteen experimental group patients received educational information and practiced eliciting the relaxation response before and after surgery. The 14 patients in the control group received only information. Experimental and control groups were compared before and after surgery on both physiological and psychological recovery variables. There were no initial differences between experimental and control groups on demographic, physiolo

The relationship between hostility and blood pressure in children.

The relationship between two dimensions of hostility and resting blood pressure was examined in 98 children aged 7 to 10 years. The children completed the expressive and experienced hostility subscales of the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory and one week later had blood pressure and obesity levels assessed. Multiple regression analyses and analyses of variance showed that expressive hostility was positively associated with blood pressure, although this relationship became marginally significant when the effects of obesity were controlled. A significant inverse relationship was found between exp

Toxic waste: behavioral effects of an environmental stressor.

This study examines the stress-related behavioral effects that may be associated with living near an ambient stressor: a toxic-waste landfill. Results are based on a telephone survey of 426 persons living in three distance strata from the landfill (within 1 1/2 miles, 1 1/2 to 5 miles, and 5 to 10 miles). The instrument was adapted from the Hopkins Life Checklist (SCL-90) and from surveys used by researchers studying the effects of the Three Mile Island nuclear accident. No significant differences were found across area or amount of stimuli exposure on the dependent variables of bodily effects

Characteristic expressions of combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder among Israeli soldiers in the 1982 Lebanon War.

This study assessed the clinical picture of two groups of Israeli soldiers: front-line soldiers who had been treated for combat stress reaction during the 1982 Lebanon War (n = 382); and matched control front-line soldiers who did not sustain combat stress reaction (n = 334). Subjects were screened one year after the war for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psychiatric symptomatology using the symptom checklist-90 (SCL-90). Results indicated that anxiety, depression, hostility, and obsessive-compulsive problems were the most salient features of PTSD among combat stress reaction casualt

Terminated Clinical Trial of TruVox: A Web-Based Intervention to Train Vocal Pitch and Resonance in Transfeminine People.

Transgender people often want to modify their voice to better match their gender identity and expression. Gender-affirming voice training can significantly improve their voice satisfaction, mental health, and quality of life, but is often inaccessible. In an NIDCD-funded grant, we therefore developed a novel website (TruVox) that is currently intended for transfeminine people and combines visual-acoustic biofeedback about vocal pitch and resonance with structured exercises. A clinical trial of TruVox was initiated but terminated by NIDCD before completion, and the current paper describes the m

Factors Associated with Walking to School Within a Feasible Walking Distance: The Key Role of Perceived Attractiveness of Walking Route.

BACKGROUND: Walking to school contributes to children's health and development, yet its prevalence has declined in recent decades. Identifying factors associated with walking to school is essential for developing effective interventions. This study aimed to determine a context-specific feasible walking distance for children aged 6-10 years in Porto, Portugal, and to examine factors associated with walking to school among children living within this distance. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 596 children. Home-to-school walking distances were calculated using OpenRouteService. Four

"Sisters Influencing Sisters:" Findings from a Community-Engaged Process to Develop a Social Media-Based, Influencer-Delivered Intervention to Increase PrEP Awareness, Knowledge, and Uptake Among Transgender Women.

Transgender women (TW) shoulder a disproportionate burden of HIV diagnoses, yet are less likely to use PrEP, due to intersectional social and structural barriers to accessing services. TW utilize social media to share health information and foster community, yet to date, most studies leveraging the power of these platforms for PrEP interventions have focused on gay men. To address this gap, we partnered with TW social media influencers and engaged a Community Advisory Board (CAB) to develop an Instagram-based intervention to increase PrEP awareness, knowledge, and use among TW. Over quarterly

Community-Based Accompaniment for Adolescents and Young Adults Transitioning into Adult HIV Care: Protocol of a Randomized Control Trial Evaluating the "PASEO" Intervention in Urban Peru.

We describe a randomized controlled trial evaluating a nine-month community-based accompaniment intervention (PASEO) to improve HIV outcomes and well-being among adolescents and young adults living with HIV (AYALWH) entering adult-centered HIV care in Lima, Peru. Participants (ages 14-23) are individually randomized (1:1) to PASEO or a modestly enhanced standard of care, with randomization stratified by health facility and caregiver support. The PASEO intervention aims to build health-related skills, enhance knowledge, promote psychosocial adjustment, and reduce logistical, administrative, and

LGBTQ+ College Students' Exposure to Discrimination and Relationships to Mental Health and Healthcare Utilization: Findings from a National Survey.

Compared to their cisgender heterosexual peers, LGBTQ+ emerging adults consistently experience poorer mental health outcomes and utilize health care at lower rates. Disparities during emerging adulthood set the trajectory for lifelong health risks. These disparities have been linked to experiences of discrimination, including both interpersonal discrimination from peers as well as from institutions and service providers. It is unknown how common these experiences are in a college setting. Using the 2024-2025 Healthy Minds Study-a large national dataset that includes 17,942 LGBTQ+ students-we e

Translation and psychometric validation of the symptom catastrophizing scale in cardiac surgery patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Symptom catastrophizing reflects maladaptive cognitive and emotional responses to physical symptoms and may worsen symptom burden, distress, and recovery. However, no validated Chinese instrument is available for cardiac surgery patients, limiting patient-centered assessment and early risk identification. OBJECTIVE: To translate and culturally adapt a symptom-neutral catastrophizing measure derived from the original Post-concussion Symptom Catastrophizing Scale and evaluate its psychometric properties in Chinese cardiac surgery patients. METHODS: Following Brislin's translation m

Explaining the Link Between HIV Stigma and Treatment Outcomes: From Stigma Avoidance to Socially Motivated Nonadherence.

BACKGROUND: Stigma is an important factor in medication adherence, but the mechanisms linking stigma to adherence are not understood, despite having been examined across multiple populations using a variety of study designs. Guided by a stigma-coping framework, we tested a model in which enacted stigma predicts antiretroviral (ART) nonadherence through stigma avoidance strategies and socially motivated nonadherence. METHOD: All adults waiting to receive their ART prescriptions (N = 1979) during multiple days and times were recruited from two public clinics in Cape Town South Africa (2021-2024

"Better Sleep Means I'm Better Able to Provide Care": Caregivers' Perceived Impacts of an Internet-Delivered Insomnia Intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Family caregivers frequently experience sleep challenges that impact their own health and ability to provide care for a care recipient (i.e., the person a caregiver supports). Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) effectively treats insomnia, but there is limited evidence regarding caregivers' perceived impacts of this intervention. The current study evaluated caregivers' experiences using Sleep Healthy Using The Internet (SHUTi), an Internet-delivered CBT-I intervention. METHOD: The sample comprised caregivers with insomnia who supported care recipients requiring me
