We have investigated temperature dependence of Ca2+ uptake by the cardiac sarcolemmal Na(+)-Ca2+ exchanger from dog, rabbit and bullfrog. Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) is a significant cause of low birth weight and maternal and neonatal death around the world. This article reviews work indicating that dietary calcium supplementation can sharply reduce the PIH incidence among pregnant women whose regular diet is calcium-poor. It also describes physiologic conditions prevailing during pregnancy that could explain calcium's major role in PIH--as well as supplemental calcium's great potential for preventing PIH among people with low-calcium diets.

We studied the effects of calcium, cyclic nucleotides, and protein kinase C on albumin transfer, electrical resistance, and cytoskeletal actin filaments in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Three primary mechanisms have been suggested as an explanation of migraine; a neuronal event, a vascular event and a mechanism focussing on the trigeminal nerve and its supply to intra- and extracranial blood vessels. Structure-activity studies of tetramethinemerocyanine fluorophores enabled the synthesis of novel dyes which showed spectral changes during reversible, calcium-dependent association with calmodulin. The authors present a study of the physical and biological properties of a new endodontic cement known as Sealapex. In its composition the presence of calcium hydroxide is introduced in order to induce calcification of the periapical tissue. The role of calcium and calmodulin during U 46619 and PGF2 alpha-induced pulmonary vasoconstriction was studied in isolated rat lungs perfused with Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate (KRB) or calcium-free KRB.
