The aim of the presented study was to characterize the content and biological activity of extracts prepared from dried Stevia rebaudiana leaves with potential application in the food or cosmetic industry. Aqueous (A), ethanolic (E) and glycol-aqueous (GA) extracts were analyzed for the content of polyphenols and proteins, showing that the highest amount of phenols (15.50 mg/g) and flavonoids (3.85 mg/g) contained GA. Calotropis procera is a medicinal plant whose pharmacological properties are associated with its latex. BACKGROUND/AIMS: To compare ophthalmic viscoelastic devices (OVDs) in protecting the cornea from endothelial cell loss during cataract surgery.
METHODS: A systematic review yielded 21 randomised controlled trials including 1769 patients. OVDs were classified according to the Arshinoff classification. Traditional pairwise meta-analyses were performed for each direct comparison. Mixed treatments comparisons (MTC) analysis was also performed to combine all direct and indirect comparisons. The outcome measure was loss in endothelial cell density 3 months after surgery.

DESIGN AND METHODS: Cells were incubated for up to 48 h in the presence of increasing concentrations of an aqueous extract of C. laureola (0.3-13.3 mg/mL). Endothelial cell loss was determined by specular microscopy in 50 patients after extracapsular cataract extraction and posterior chamber lens implantation. An age-matched group of unoperated fellow eyes and normal phakic eyes comprised the control group. For this series, 14.7% of the central corneal endothelial cells were lost as a result of cataract surgery and lens implantation. These patients are the first group to receive a Shearing lens implant.

Regeneration of lens epithelium on the lens capsule was studied in tissue culture. The entire capsule with attached epithelium was taken from rabbit lenses and from human lenses with cataract. Generally, the epithelium grew in a monolayer but multilayered masses of cells were also seen. Most lens fibers degenerated during the first days and formed spherical membrane enclosed vesicles containing cytoplasm but no nuclei. The lens fiber remnants, together with regenerating epithelium, created structures that were similar in many ways to the clinical appearance of after-cataract.

Perseverance is a phenotype in which a small subpopulation of bacteria continues to divide for hours in the presence of antimicrobial concentrations that inhibit bulk population growth, without acquiring genetic resistance.
