Adverse childhood experience and adult persistent pain and disability: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research highlights the pervasive harms of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on health throughout the life-course. However, findings from prior reviews and recent longitudinal studies investigating the association between types of ACEs and persistent pain have yielded inconsistent findings in the strength and direction of associations. The purpose of this review is to appraise and summarize evidence on the relationship between ACEs and persistent pain and disability outcomes in adulthood. The specific aims are (1) to determine whether there is a relationship be

A long-term follow-up study of spinal abnormalities and pain in adults with cerebral palsy and spastic diplegia more than 25 years after selective dorsal rhizotomy.

OBJECTIVE: The main purpose of selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is to reduce spasticity in the lower extremities of children diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP) and spastic diplegia. The potential for developing spinal abnormalities and pain is a concern, especially in the aging CP population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate spinal abnormalities, level of pain, and disability (due to back or leg pain) in adults with CP, and associations with participant characteristics, more than 25 years after SDR. METHODS: This is a 9-year follow-up study with data collection conducted in 20

Evaluating the network adequacy of vision care services for children in Arizona: A cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Vision challenges are among the most prevalent disabling conditions in childhood, affecting up to 28% of school-age children. These issues can impact the development, learning, and literacy skills of affected children. While vision problems are correctable with timely diagnosis and treatment, insufficient networks can impede children's access to comprehensive, and high-quality care. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to determine where pediatric vision care network adequacy exists in the state of Arizona and where there are gaps in receiving vision care for children. METHODS: This cross-s

Efficacy of Citicoline as a Neuroprotector in children with post cardiac arrest: a randomized controlled clinical trial.

Brain hypoxia after cardiac arrest leads to damage of the neuronal cell membrane. Citicoline is necessary for the synthesis of cell membrane. We planned to assess the neuroprotective effect of citicoline in children after cardiac arrest. This randomized controlled trial was carried out at pediatric intensive care units (PICU) and surgical ICU at Tanta university hospital on 80 consecutive children surviving in-hospital cardiac arrest who were subdivided into two groups. Group I (citicoline group) included 40 children with post-cardiac arrest who received citicoline 10 mg /kg /12 h IV for 6 wee

The role of vitamin D replacement therapy in serum FGF23 concentration in children with myelomeningocele compared with healthy children - a preliminary study.

Background Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a recently discovered bone-derived regulator of vitamin D metabolism and phosphate homeostasis. It inhibits phosphate reabsorption and calcitriol production by the kidney. Myelomeningocele (MMC) remains the most severe form of neural tube defects involving serious locomotor disability, osteoporosis and pathologic fractures. We aimed to investigate the influence of vitamin D replacement therapy on serum FGF23 concentration in children with MMC and compare the results with healthy participants. Methods This prospective analysis was conducted on 1

Management of Pediatric Mandibular Condyle Fractures: A Literature Review.

This narrative review evaluates the literature on the management of mandibular condyle fractures in growing patients. It aims to illustrate some fundamental biological principles and to offer a series of considerations applicable to clinical practice. The discussion is based on 116 papers published in PubMed and two relevant textbooks. Condylar fractures may be overlooked, especially in pre-scholar children, where compliance is usually reduced. However, these injuries can have disabling sequelae such as ankyloses, facial deformities, malocclusion, and chronic pain in some patients if not diagn

Low discriminative power of WISC cognitive profile in developmental dyscalculia.

BACKGROUND: The role of domain-general cognitive abilities in the etiology of Developmental Dyscalculia (DD) is a hotly debated issue. AIMS: In the present study, we tested whether WISC-IV cognitive profiles can be useful to single out DD. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Using a stringent 2-SD cutoff in a standardized numeracy battery, we identified children with DD (N = 43) within a clinical sample referred for assessment of learning disability and compared them in terms of WISC cognitive indexes to the remaining children without DD (N = 100) employing cross-validated logistic regression. Post-tuberculosis sequelae in children and adolescents: a systematic review.

In 2020, an estimated total of 155 million people had survived tuberculosis. Among this number, a sizable proportion have considerable post-tuberculosis morbidity, as shown for the adult population. This systematic review aims to identify the spectrum and prevalence of post-tuberculosis sequelae in children and adolescents. Four databases were systematically searched from database inception to Feb 7, 2022, for literature on post-treatment outcomes of tuberculosis acquired during childhood. Of the 4613 identified publications, 71 studies were included in this systematic review. Studies on cohor

Increased structural covariance in brain regions for number processing and memory in children with developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a developmental learning disability associated with deficits in processing numerical and mathematical information. Several studies demonstrated functional network alterations in DD. Yet, there are no studies, which examined the structural network integrity in DD. We compared whole-brain maps of volume based structural covariance between 19 (4 males) children with DD and 18 (4 males) typically developing children. We found elevated structural covariance in the DD group between the anterior intraparietal sulcus to the middle temporal and frontal gyrus (p < 0.05,

A National Population Cohort Study Showed That Exposure to General Anesthesia in Early Childhood Is Associated with an Increase in the Risk of Developmental Delay.

This study investigated the relationship between exposure to general anesthesia (GA) and the risk of cognitive and mental disorders. This study has thus investigated the relationships between exposure to GA before the age of 3 and subsequent cognitive and mental disorders in a national-wide research sample. We obtained our subjects from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan, which was based on the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). Children in the hospital aged less than 3 years old were included if there was

Sport Ability during Walking Age in Clubfoot-Affected Children after Ponseti Method: A Case-Series Study.

BACKGROUND: The Ponseti method (PM) of manipulative treatment for congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) or clubfoot became widely adopted by pediatric orthopedic surgeons at the beginning of the mid-1990s with reports of long-term successful outcomes. Sports are crucial for children's development and for learning good behavior. This study aimed to evaluate the sports activity levels in children treated with PM and to assess the different outcomes, according to gender and bilaterality. METHODS: A total of 25 patients (44 feet) with CTEV treated by the PM were included in the study. The patient

Chronic suppurative otitis media in Zimbabwean school children: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic suppurative otitis media is a major cause of disabling childhood hearing loss, especially in low-income countries. Estimates on its prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa range from the lowest to the highest in the world (less than one per cent to more than five per cent). However, the prevalence of chronic suppurative otitis media in Zimbabwe is largely unknown. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of paediatric chronic suppurative otitis media and other middle-ear pathology in rural Zimbabwe. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was performed in primary school children aged

Socioeconomic Status and Reading Disability: Neuroanatomy and Plasticity in Response to Intervention.

Although reading disability (RD) and socioeconomic status (SES) are independently associated with variation in reading ability and brain structure/function, the joint influence of SES and RD on neuroanatomy and/or response to intervention is unknown. In total, 65 children with RD (ages 6-9) with diverse SES were assigned to an intensive, 6-week summer reading intervention (n = 40) or to a waiting-list control group (n = 25). Before and after, all children completed standardized reading assessments and magnetic resonance imaging to measure cortical thickness. At baseline, higher SES correlated

Novel variants in SPTAN1 without epilepsy: An expansion of the phenotype.

We describe two unrelated children with de novo variants in the non-erythrocytic alpha-II-spectrin (SPTAN1) gene who have hypoplastic brain structures, intellectual disability, and both fine and gross motor impairments. Using agnostic exome sequencing, we identified a nonsense variant creating a premature stop codon in exon 21 of SPTAN1, and in a second patient we identified an intronic substitution in SPTAN1 prior to exon 50 creating a new donor acceptor site. Neither of these variants has been described previously. Although some of these patients' features are consistent with the known SPTAN
