Measuring the neuropsychological consequences of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: a rapid literature review.

OBJECTIVES: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a hematological disorder associated with potentially severe long-term health outcomes, including neuropsychological consequences. Guidelines recommend cognitive assessment for people with TTP, and an understanding of how the condition affects various cognitive domains can support decision-making for clinicians when selecting assessment measures. METHODS: A rapid literature review was conducted using MEDLINE Ultimate, CINAHL Ultimate and PsycINFO to appraise the existing evidence base regarding the impact of TTP on cognition, the measure

In Vivo cortical tau in Parkinson's disease using 18F-AV-1451 positron emission tomography.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease copathology is common in PD at autopsy. In non-PD subjects with mild cognitive impairment, tau depositions can be detected using 18F-AV-1451 PET. We hypothesized that 18F-AV-1451 PET would show tau aggregation in PD with mild cognitive impairment and correlate with cognitive dysfunction. OBJECTIVES: To describe tau aggregation in PD patients. METHODS: Twenty-six PD patients and 23 controls had 18F-AV-1451 PET and neuropsychological assessment to detect mild cognitive impairment. RESULTS: Nine PD patients (35%) were identified with mild cognitive impairment. R

Examining the influence of two emotion regulation strategies on anxiety in Chinese college students: insights from cross-lagged and moderated network models.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety, a prevalent and detrimental mental disorder, usually emerges in late adolescence and emerging adulthood. Emotion regulation strategies, namely expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal, share a close relation with the onset and maintenance of anxiety. Yet the relation between anxiety and emotion regulation strategies remains controversial and warrants further clarification. METHODS: The generalized anxiety disorder-7 (GAD-7) was used to measure the anxiety disorders and the emotion regulation questionnaire (ERQ) was utilized to assess the use of two emotion regulat

Brain age gap as a predictive biomarker that links aging, lifestyle, and neuropsychiatric health.

BACKGROUND: The brain age gap (BAG) is a neuroimaging-derived marker of accelerated brain aging. However, its clinical application faces challenges due to model inaccuracies and unclear links to disease mechanisms. This study investigates the clinical relevance of BAG across neuropsychiatric disorders, cognitive decline, mortality, and lifestyle interventions. METHODS: We use data from multiple cohorts, including 38,967 participants from the UK Biobank (ages 45-82, 52.5% female), 1,402 individuals from the ADNI study (ages 55-96, 56.0% female), and 1,182 from the PPMI study (ages 45-83, 58.0%

Dalzanemdor (SAGE-718), a novel, investigational N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor positive allosteric modulator: Safety, tolerability, and clinical pharmacology in randomized dose-finding studies in healthy participants and an open-label study in participants with Huntington's disease.

N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR)-positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) represent a potential therapeutic strategy for cognitive impairment in disorders associated with NMDAR hypofunction, including Huntington's disease (HD) and Alzheimer's disease. Dalzanemdor (SAGE-718) is a novel, investigational NMDAR PAM being evaluated for the potential treatment of cognitive impairment in these disorders. We report first-in-human, phase I, double-blind, dose-finding studies to assess the safety, tolerability, and clinical pharmacology of dalzanemdor. A single-ascending dose study (dalzanemdor 0.35,

Cognitive rehabilitation for Parkinson’s disease dementia: a study protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in developing non-pharmacological treatments to address the cognitive deficits apparent in Parkinson's disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies. Cognitive rehabilitation is a goal-oriented behavioural intervention which focuses on improving everyday functioning through management of cognitive difficulties; it has been shown to be effective in Alzheimer's disease. To date, no studies have assessed its potential efficacy for addressing the impact of cognitive impairment in people with Parkinson's disease or dementia with Lewy bodies. METHODS/DESIGN: P

Additional considerations in the cognitive-behavioral treatment of obsessional ruminations--a case study.

The cognitive-behavioral treatment of a 24-year-old woman with moderately severe obsessional ruminations is described. The case demonstrates both the effectiveness and limitations of exposure with response prevention techniques for obsessive-compulsive disorder. The client's response raises questions about the clinical utility of viewing obsessions exclusively as conditioned anxiety stimuli. In addition, the case shows that cognitions related to control rather than appraisals of responsibility were instrumental in initiating neutralising activity. Further modification of the current cognitive-

Causes of eating disorders.

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa have emerged as the predominant eating disorders. We review the recent research evidence pertaining to the development of these disorders, including sociocultural factors (e.g., media and peer influences), family factors (e.g., enmeshment and criticism), negative affect, low self-esteem, and body dissatisfaction. Also reviewed are cognitive and biological aspects of eating disorders. Some contributory factors appear to be necessary for the appearance of eating disorders, but none is sufficient. Eating disorders may represent a way of coping with problems of

Cognitive impairment in tension-type headache is associated with altered hippocampal functional connectivity.

Tension-type headache (TTH) is a widespread primary headache disorder that causes mild to moderate pain, which may be seen together with cognitive deficits. It is unclear if TTH-linked cognitive impairment is associated with functional alterations. Seventy-five participants were enrolled in the study. Mini Mental State Evaluation (MMSE) and Montreal Cognition Assessment (MoCA) tests were applied to evaluate cognitive impairment. A neuroimaging analysis was applied to determine whether the hippocampus responsible for pain and cognition was affected in TTH patients. Our functional data revealed

Asperger syndrome and schizophrenia: Νeurodevelopmental continuum or separated clinical entities?

This article is an overview of the literature on Asperger's syndrome and schizophrenia and aim to discuss their similarities and differences. Eugen Bleuler who associated the terms "schizophrenia" and "autism" a century ago, viewed autism as a form of solitude of schizophrenic patients representing withdrawal from reality. Ever since, there has been confusion as to the boundaries between these conditions. Nowadays recent research, from a variety of perspectives-genomics, neurodevelopment, psychiatry, etc. has given new information on these conditions. It is easier to demarcate these two disord

Evaluating gender bias in an eating disorder risk assessment questionnaire for athletes.

Due to stigma, eating disorders are under-researched, underdiagnosed and undertreated among men. This is particularly pertinent among athletes, as athletic goals are a major risk factor for disordered eating in men. This gender stereotype may be reinforced by eating disorder risk assessment tools that better reflect female symptoms. We examine an eating disorder risk assessment questionnaire in a population of athletes to assess both (1) gender bias in individual items and (2) gender differences on a cognitive and behavioral subscale, identified through a factor analysis. Controlling for eatin

Novel insights into minipuberty and GnRH: Implications on neurodevelopment, cognition, and COVID-19 therapeutics.

In humans, the first 1000 days of life are pivotal for brain and organism development. Shortly after birth, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons in the hypothalamus are activated, a phenomenon known as minipuberty. This phenomenon, observed in all mammals studied, influences the postnatal development of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and reproductive function. This review will put into perspective the results of recent studies showing that the impact of minipuberty extends beyond reproductive function, influencing sensory and cognitive maturation. Studies in mice have r
