Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) previously called carcinoid tumors are neoplasms of enterochromaffin/neuroendocrine cell origin which display neurosecretory capacity that may result in the carcinoid syndrome. The annual incidence of patients with NET is 8.4 per 100000; yet many NET remain asymptomatic and clinically undetected. A majority of NET follows a benign course; however, some will display malignant characteristics. NET most commonly occur in the gastrointestinal tract (67%) and bronchopulmonary system (25%). Gastrointestinal NET occur within the stomach, small intestine, liver, and rectum.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare tumors that can arise anywhere in the tubular gastrointestinal tract. These tumors occasionally present as a pelvic mass, leading to a misdiagnosis of gynecological disease. A 47-year-old woman presented with a pelvic mass measuring 30 cm in diameter and highly elevated CA-125 levels. She underwent exploratory laparotomy with resection of the pelvic mass. Biopsies from the sigmoid colon of patients with collagenous colitis and treated lymphocytic colitis were analyzed in miniaturized Ussing chambers for electrogenic sodium transport and barrier function with one-path impedance spectroscopy. Adenosquamous carcinomas of the colorectum are rare neoplasms. Our experience with two cases is presented in this paper. One patient, who complained of bloody stool, was found to have adenocarcinoma in the sigmoid colon. He received a laparoscopy-assisted sigmoidectomy. A retrospective analysis of 81 patients who had closure of colostomy over a 32-month period was carried out to establish factors affecting the outcome of this operation. Their ages averaged 27 years and there were 69 male patients. The sigmoid colon was the most common site and the loop colostomy was most frequently performed. A total of 254 cases of colorectal neoplasms were studied. A male predominance was noted with both benign and malignant neoplasms (M:F of 4.6:1 and 1.1:1 respectively). The peak incidence was in the fifth decade. The rectum was the commonest site for both benign and malignant neoplasms (75% and 63% respectively) followed by the sigmoid colon (11% and 16% respectively). Intestinal anastomoses using Valtrac-Bar biofragmentable rings were performed in 9 advanced ovarian cancer patients presenting with symptoms of acute or subacute intestinal obstruction. Two ileo-transversal anastomoses, six sigmo-rectal and one ileo-ileal ones were performed. A part of sigmoid colon with tumour causing obstruction was resected in seven patients and in two patients a resection of an ileal loop was performed. In two patients a colostomy was necessary. A patient with grade II endometrial adenocarcinoma underwent TAH/BSO. The tumor penetrated 50% of the myometrium. A lesion from the serosa of the sigmoid colon was removed and contained metastatic adenocarcinoma. Metastatic tumor was also found in the common iliac lymph nodes.
