The California serogroup viruses are mosquito viruses that cause human infections on five continents. They are maintained and amplified in nature by a wide variety of mosquito vectors and mammalian hosts; they thrive in a remarkably wide variety of microclimates (eg, tropical, coastal temperate marshland, lowland river valleys, alpine valleys and highlands, high boreal deserts, and arctic steppes). In 1993, California serogroup viruses caused 71% of all cases of arboviral illness in the United States, principally La Crosse encephalitis. The 30 to 180 annual cases of La Crosse encephalitis repr

Dengue fever is one of the most common mosquito-borne viral illnesses in the world. It is usually transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito. Dengue infections are caused by four antigenically distinct but closely related viruses (DEN 1?4). Infection with any one of the viruses is thought to provide lifetime immunity to future infections from the same virus but only short-term cross-immunity to the other types, leading to the possibility of secondary infections. Dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS), more severe types of

Human Oesophagostomum infections are locally common in northern Ghana. The present study describes the results of a cross-sectional survey involving 1011 subjects, selected by a compound-based random sampling method from 1227 compounds in 24 villages. Selected persons were examined by both Kato and coproculture methods. Hookworm-like eggs, representing ova of Oesophagostomum bifurcum and hookworm were detected in 87.5% of the Kato smears. The geometric mean egg count of the infected subjects was 1018. Upon coproculture, third-stage larvae of O. bifurcum and hookworm were detected in 53.0% and

A "crude" antigen prepared from the strobilate stage of Taenia saginata was tested for its suitability in the peroxidase microenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the diagnosis of T. saginata cysticercosis in cattle. Sera were tested from laboratory and pasture-reared calves experimentally infected with T. saginata as well as from cattle naturally infected by grazing on pasture irrigated with sewage effluent. The specificity of the "diagnostic" antigen was assessed using sera from laboratory-reared cattle with monospecific infections of T. saginata, T. hydatigena, Fasiciola hepatica,

False-positive serological reactions (FPSR) due to infections with Yersinia enterocolitica serotype Oratio9 (YeOratio9) are a problem in tests for brucellosis. In the present study, FPSR in classical and novel tests for brucellosis following experimental infections of pigs with YeOratio9 were compared with responses of B. suis biovar 2-inoculated pigs. FPSR were limited to 2-9 weeks post-YeOratio9 inoculation, while B. suis-infected pigs were test-positive throughout the 21-week period of investigation. Although YeOratio9-inoculated pigs exhibited FPSR in Brucella tests for a limited period of

Bloodstream infections are a frequent complication in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected adults in Africa and usually associated with a poor prognosis. We evaluated bloodstream infections across a decade in 3 prospective cross-sectional surveys of consecutive medical admissions to the Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya. Participants received standard clinical care throughout. In 1988-1989, 29.5% (28 of 95) of HIV-positive patients had bloodstream infections, compared with 31.9% (46 of 144) in 1992 and 21.3% (43 of 197) in 1997. Bacteremia and mycobacteremia were significantly

Because diagnosis of strongyloidiasis by stool examination is unreliable and because of the potential for serious disease in Strongyloides infections, there is need for improved diagnostic aids to facilitate recognition and treatment of this parasitic infection. Serologic testing, when available, requires antigen preparation from infected primates or dogs that can be difficult to maintain. Several recombinant clones from a cDNA library prepared from the infective stage of Strongyloides stercoralis were characterized. Serologic results indicate that the recombinant proteins were equally or more

The objectives of this article were to review the causes and extent of hospital-associated infectious diarrhea and associated risks in the general hospital ward and intensive care unit (ICU), to compare microorganisms with similar symptoms to aid in recognition that will lead to timely and appropriate treatment and control measures, and to propose infection prevention protocols that could decrease human process errors in the ICU. This literature review describes epidemiology, comparison of microbial characteristics for potential hospital-associated enteric pathogens, diagnosis, and prevention,

A 5-year review of nosocomial infections, bacteraemia and wound colonization in patients admitted to a burn intensive care unit from June 2001 to May 2006 was carried out. All patients required intubation at some point, and ICU support. Data on bacterial and fungal isolates were entered prospectively into a hospital-wide computerized database. Nosocomial infections (NIs) were defined using standard CDC criteria. Seventy-six patients were admitted during the study period, with 57 qualifying for analysis. Forty-two patients (74%) developed 137 NIs, with 240 NIs/100 admissions. The most common NI

Rare HLA alleles such as HLA-B57 are associated with slow progression to AIDS. However, the evidence for the advantage of rare protective alleles is limited, and the mechanism is still unclear. Although the prevalence of HLA-B*67:01 is only 1.2% in Japan, HLA-B*67:01-positive (HLA-B*67:01+) individuals had the lowest plasma viral load (pVL) and highest CD4 count in HIV-1 clade B-infected Japanese individuals. We investigated the mechanism of immunological control of HIV-1 by a rare protective allele, HLA-B*67:01. We identified six novel HLA-B*67:01-restricted epitopes and found that T cells sp

Following more than two decades of successful elimination of the New World screwworm fly from Central and North America, new outbreaks emerged in Panama in 2023, initially affecting livestock, and rapidly spreading northward to impact not only livestock but also companion animals and humans. Forest degradation, increasing cattle density, and climate-driven shifts in the fly's distribution-particularly its recolonization of regions it historically occupied-are converging to expose critical gaps in preparedness and cross-sector coordination. In this review, we examine the drivers of screwworm re

Cross-reactive antibodies targeting multiple epitopes have been identified in Sarbecoviruses, but the precise molecular mechanism(s) behind the crossreactivity remain poorly understood. Here, we isolate 3D1, a broadly neutralizing antibody (bnAb) derived from a human combinatorial antibody library targeting the conserved HR1 domain. 3D1 uniquely recognizes a β-turn fold comprising a 6-mer peptide (pepDVVNQN/Q) that forms during a pre-hairpin transition state, occurring exclusively before membrane fusion during viral infection. 3D1 effectively neutralizes a wide range of live SARS-CoV-2 wild-ty

Given the surge in mpox outbreaks in 2022 and the advancements in domestic and international vaccine research, the effectiveness of smallpox vaccines in providing cross-protection against mpox remains crucial. Having learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is significant to continue evaluating existing vaccines to ensure their safety and efficacy. Developing new vaccines for widespread use against mpox and its emerging strains also serves as a preventive strategy in the ongoing battle against this dynamic infection. Here's an opportunity to control human-to-human transmission, give short deadli

The Janssen Ebola virus (EBOV) vaccine consists of the adenovirus type 26 vector encoding the EBOV glycoprotein (GP) (Ad26.ZEBOV) and the modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) vector encoding GP from EBOV, Sudan virus, and Marburg virus and nucleoprotein from Tai Forest virus (MVA-BN-Filo) administered 8 weeks later. We conducted a systems immunology analysis of antibody-mediated and cellular immune responses induced after two immunizations with either vaccine used first. The response to vaccination was EBOV GP specific and defined by high antibody binding, Fc effector, and neutralizing responses wit

We describe the isolation and characterization of a novel insect-specific flavivirus (ISFV), tentatively named Aripo virus (ARPV), that was isolated from Psorophora albipes mosquitoes collected in Trinidad. The ARPV genome was determined and phylogenetic analyses showed that it is a dual host associated ISFV, and clusters with the main mosquito-borne flaviviruses. ARPV antigen was significantly cross-reactive with Japanese encephalitis virus serogroup antisera, with significant cross-reactivity to Ilheus and West Nile virus (WNV). Results suggest that ARPV replication is limited to mosquitoes,

Numerous tests for the detection of antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi are commercially available. Manufacturer-derived data invariably report a high sensitivity and specificity, but comparative studies demonstrate large differences in clinical practice, especially with regard to specificity. We retrospectively collected data from validation studies for B. burgdorferi antibody assays from 8 laboratories in the Netherlands. The total number of samples was 809. Samples were selected based on clinical and laboratory parameters. We included samples from patients with erythema migrans, acroder

Commonly encountered in the general adult and elderly population, in most cases simple renal cysts are confidently diagnosed on imaging studies and do not require further workup or treatment. However, large or growing renal cysts sometimes cause symptoms or signs such as hypertension, palpable mass, flank or abdominal pain, obstructive uropathy, and hematuria, which may indicate the need for minimally invasive percutaneous or laparoscopic treatment. Furthermore, severe complications such as cystic hemorrhage, rupture, or superinfection may occur, particularly in patients with polycystic renal

Despite infection control measures, an important increase in the extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae incidence density occurred in our hospital from 2006 onwards. This study, focusing on the 2005-2007 period, was performed in an attempt to explain this increase. ESBLs were characterized, isolates were typed by ERIC2-PCR, and sequence type (ST) of clustered isolates was determined. Temporal-spatial relationships of patients were analysed to assess possible cross-contamination. Of the 74 ESBL-producing isolates, 30 (40%) were detected at admission, 53 (71∙5%) pro
