Nickel is the most common cause of contact allergy among females. A recent Danish population study found 11.1% of the females and 2.2% of the males nickel-sensitized. The acute development of an irritating rash often results in a patient presenting to the Emergency Department instead of scheduling an office visit. This rash is frequently the result of the patient's interaction with the environment. Consequently, it is important that emergency physicians become more familiar with environmentally induced skin disorders. Sunburn and poison ivy are examples of these types of disorders. These and less common environmentally related skin disorders are reviewed.

We report a patient with long-standing polymorphic light eruption (PLE) who developed a photocontact allergy to mexenone and several contact allergies. The occurrence of multiple contact and photocontact allergies in PLE and the possible relationship of such allergies to the pathogenesis of PLE are discussed.
