Motivated by the increasing evidence that auditory cortex is under control of dopaminergic cell structures of the ventral midbrain, we studied how the ventral tegmental area and substantia nigra affect neuronal activity in auditory cortex. We electrically stimulated 567 deep brain sites in total within and in the vicinity of the two dopaminergic ventral midbrain structures and at the same time, recorded local field potentials and neuronal discharges in cortex. In experiments conducted on three awake macaque monkeys, we found that electrical stimulation of the dopaminergic ventral midbrain resu

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to identify different states of energy metabolism in the perfused isolated vertebrate retina by simultaneous recordings of light-evoked changes of transretinal potential (TRP) and spectroscopic changes related to oxidation of pyridine nucleotides.
METHODS: Isolated retinas were obtained from R.esc. and superfused. For each setting, three experiments were performed. Eighteen retinas were used. TRP as a response to light stimulation was recorded simultaneously with stimulus-induced transmission shift at 350 nm. These responses were recorded under normal conditions, under

Spontaneous contractions, inhibitory responses produced by electrical field stimulation, and some electrophysiologic properties of circular smooth muscle from normal sigmoid colon and from sigmoid colon of ulcerative colitis patients were compared in vitro using simultaneous recordings of mechanical and intracellular electrical activity. In normal colonic circular muscle obtained from 21 patients, the frequency of spontaneous summation contractions ranged from 3 to 7 per 4 min, whereas in circular muscle from 13 patients with ulcerative colitis, the frequency of these contractions ranged from

We describe a novel lab-on-a-chip microsystem for cells electroporation, which can be used in studies comparing the effectiveness of two anti-cancer procedures. Our device in which we can simultaneously test the effect of a drug and electrically stimulate cells can be used to assess the effectiveness of chemo- and electrochemotherapy. The microsystem comprised two pairs of indium tin oxide electrodes that were stacked parallel to the culture microchambers. It enables the observation and performance of tests on adherent cells at the same time for 4 different test samples in 6 repetitions (contr

Gonadal hormones may influence sexual activity by reducing anxiety. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) and prelimbic (PL) and infralimbic (IL) cortical regions comprise a loop that is related to fear, anxiety, and social behavior. In female ovariectomized rats, actions of estradiol, progesterone, and sequential estradiol and progesterone administration were explored in the open field test (OFT) and plus maze test (PMT) to evaluate signs of anxiety-like behavior. The three hormonal treatments reduced indicators of anxiety in the PMT but did not influence behavior in the OFT. In the same behaviorall

The border zone (BZ) of the viable myocardium adjacent to an infarct undergoes extensive autonomic and electrical remodeling and is prone to repolarization alternans-induced cardiac arrhythmias. BZ remodeling processes may promote or inhibit Ca2+ and/or repolarization alternans and may differentially affect ventricular arrhythmogenesis. Here, we used a detailed computational model of the canine ventricular cardiomyocyte to study the determinants of alternans in the BZ and their regulation by β-adrenergic receptor (β-AR) stimulation. The BZ model developed Ca2+ transient alternans at slower pac

OBJECT: The lateral occipital cortex in humans is known as the "extrastriate visual cortex." It is, however, an unexplored field of research, and the anatomical nomenclature for its surface has still not been standardized. This study was designed to investigate whether the lateral occipital cortex in humans has retinotopic representation.
METHODS: Four right-handed patients with a diagnosis of intractable epilepsy from space-occupying lesions in the occipital lobe or epilepsy originating in the occipital lobe received permanently implanted subdural electrodes. Electrical cortical stimulation

Modifications of responses of hippocampal neurons to sensory stimuli at the background of increased endogenous acetylcholine level (injection of physostigmine) and during blocking by scopolamine were analysed in the chronic alert rabbit. A significant decrease of reactivity (about 40%) of hippocampal neurons to sensory stimuli occurred after physostigmine injection, inducing stable theta modulation. Suppression and decrease of inhibitory responses (including initial reset phase) and of some excitatory reactions (including on-effects) were observed. However, a limited group of excitatory respon

The corticospinal tract represents a highly developed neural system that dominates motor control in humans. This allows the performance of skilled finger movements, such as playing the piano. In contrast, according to preclinical studies, automatically performed complex movements, such as locomotion or cooperative forelimb movements, appear to be controlled mainly by brainstem motor centres. Only in recent years, with the advancement of new methodologies, has evidence emerged that limb coordination in humans is also based on neural limb coupling mediated by brainstem motor centres. This neural

OBJECTIVES: Modification of the electrode placement with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) impacts on patient outcomes, including cognitive effects. The investigation of alternative right unilateral placements (RUL) has the potential to further improve ECT outcomes by reducing cognitive side effects.
METHODS: This study investigated differences in the intracerebral distribution of current density comparing the standard d'Elia right unilateral positioning (temporoparietal [TP]) with two recently developed RUL placements, focal electrically administered seizure therapy (FEAST) and frontoparietal

Neuromodulation of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) by electrical stimulation may augment autonomic function after injury or in neurodegenerative disorders. Nerve fiber size, myelination, and distance between individual fibers and the stimulation electrode may influence response thresholds to electrical stimulation. However, information on the spatial distribution of nerve fibers within the PNS is sparse. We developed a new two-dimensional (2D) morphological mapping tool to assess spatial heterogeneity and clustering of nerve fibers. The L6-S3 ventral roots (VRs) in rhesus macaques were use

Neglect is a disabling neuropsychological syndrome that is frequently observed following right-hemispheric stroke. Affected individuals often present with multiple attentional deficits, ranging from reduced orienting towards contralesional space to a generalized impairment in maintaining attention over time. Although a degree of spontaneous recovery occurs in most patients, in some individuals this condition can be treatment-resistant with prominent ongoing non-spatial deficits. Further, there is a large inter-individual variability in response to different therapeutic approaches. Given its po

INTRODUCTION: The splenic plexus might represent a novel neuroimmunomodulatory therapeutic target as electrical stimulation of this tissue has been shown to have beneficial anti-inflammatory effects. Tortuous splenic artery segments (splenic artery loops), including their surrounding nerve plexus, have been evaluated as potential stimulation sites in humans. At present, however, our understanding of these loops and their surrounding nerve plexus is incomplete. This study aims to characterize the dimensions of these loops and their surrounding nerve tissue.

There is an emerging belief that electrically elicited blink reflexes (BR) may distinguish Alzheimer's disease (AD) from other disorders characterized by memory dysfunction. To qualitatively and quantitatively distinguish the effects that electrical stimulation has over the blink reflex (eBR) recorded from patients with AD and healthy controls (HCs), we did a systematic review of the literature, and conducted a meta-analysis. Following our selected criteria, 94 AD patients and 97 HCs were identified from articles published in English between 1950 and 2017. Although the 3 responses (R1, R2 and

Bilateral cochlear implantation has recently been introduced with the aim of improving both speech perception in background noise and sound localization. Although evidence suggests that binaural perception is possible with two cochlear implants, results in humans are variable. To explore potential contributing factors to these variable outcomes, we have developed a behavioral animal model of bilateral cochlear implantation in a novel species, the ferret. Although ferrets are ideally suited to psychophysical and physiological assessments of binaural hearing, cochlear implantation has not been p

A study was carried out to determine whether the location of the inferior gluteal nerve could be reliably predicted using external anatomy or vascular imaging. This study was motivated by our group's development of an electrical stimulation system to provide direct gluteal stimulation in paralyzed individuals, in particular those with spinal cord injury (SCI). Pressure ulcers are a common complication for many individuals with reduced mobility. Numerous approaches have been employed to treat and prevent pressure ulcers; however no procedure or nursing care regimen has been successful in eradic

Although the understanding of migraine pathophysiology is incomplete, it is now well accepted that this neurovascular syndrome is mainly due to a cranial vasodilation with activation of the trigeminal system. Several experimental migraine models, based on vascular and neuronal involvement, have been developed. Obviously, the migraine models do not entail all facets of this clinically heterogeneous disorder, but their contribution at several levels (molecular, in vitro, in vivo) has been crucial in the development of novel antimigraine drugs and in the understanding of migraine pathophysiology.

In the adult cricket, neurogenesis occurs in the mushroom bodies, the main integrative structures of the insect brain. Mushroom body neuroblast proliferation is modulated in response to environmental stimuli. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects remain unspecified. In the present study, we demonstrate that electrical stimulation of the antennal nerve mimics the effects of olfactory activation and increases mushroom body neurogenesis. The putative role of nitric oxide (NO) in this activity-regulated neurogenesis was then explored. In vivo and in vitro experiments demonstrate that NO

Cervical magnetic stimulation (CMS) produces a greater twitch transdiaphragmatic pressure (TwPdi) than electrical stimulation. This may be because CMS produces rib cage muscle activation, thus producing an inspiratory action independent of the diaphragm. Alternatively, CMS could merely stiffen the rib cage, allowing the diaphragm to act efficiently, by contracting against a stable rib cage. To examine these two hypotheses we studied five patients with isolated bilateral diaphragm paralysis using CMS and bilateral electrical phrenic stimulation (BES). TwPdi, twitch esophageal pressure (TwPes),
