Effects of bibliotherapy on emotional distress, coping strategies, and resilience in adolescents with cancer: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of interactive versus reading bibliotherapy using picture books on emotional distress, coping strategies, and resilience among adolescents with cancer. METHODS: In this multicenter pilot randomized controlled trial with qualitative interviews, 27 patients aged 10-19 years diagnosed with leukemia or osteosarcoma within the past two years and undergoing treatment were randomly assigned to interactive bibliotherapy (n = 14) or reading bibliotherapy (n = 13). Each participant completed two sessions with picture books, 1-2 weeks apart. Emotional distres

What Do Patients with Traumatic Brachial Plexus Injuries Need for Social and Emotional Support? A Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adults with traumatic brachial plexus injury (BPI) face numerous challenges, both directly and indirectly related to their physical disability, during their adjustment to life after injury. The goal of this study was to identify domains of care in which a patient navigator could improve delivery of care for patients with BPI as they await recovery of upper-extremity function. METHODS: The authors conducted semi-structured interviews with 28 patients with BPI after reconstruction. The interview guide focused on interactions with members of their care team and other sources of suppo

Interplay between motor stereotypies, emotional dysregulation, and sensory reactivity in adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Motor stereotypies (MS), emotional dysregulation (ED), and altered sensory reactivity (SENS) are highly prevalent in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Various studies suggest a relationship among these variables. This study aimed to examine the relationship between ED and sensory patterns and to analyse their combined influence on MS in adolescents and adults with ASD. METHODS: In total, 97 adolescents and adults with ASD were evaluated using the Stereotyped Behavior Scale, the Emotion Dysregulation Inventory, and the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile. Correlation coeffi

The Impact of Trauma and Substance Use on Emotion Regulation and Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration: Implications for Perpetrator Programs.

(1) Background: Alcohol and/or other drug use problems (ADUPs) and trauma are key risk factors for intimate partner violence (IPV) that should be addressed in perpetrator programs. Participants with ADUPs and trauma histories may display greater difficulties in emotion regulation, which may increase the likelihood of IPV recidivism. The study aimed to examine differences among participants with trauma, ADUPs, ADUPs and trauma, and without such factors in dropout, IPV, and variables related to emotion regulation at pre- and post-intervention; (2) Methods: A sample of 312 men court-mandated to a

A rodent model of enhanced anticipation of positive events: sex-specific modifications in cognitive bias and emotional resilience.

While it is known that chronic unpredictable stress and negative events adversely affect neurobiological outcomes, much less is known regarding the neurobiological impact of positive emotions such as chronic anticipation of appetitive events. From a translational perspective, an enhanced understanding of the impact of extended exposure to positive emotions may provide novel insights into effective non-pharmacological, behavior-based approaches to enhance mental resilience. Here, we investigate a novel rodent model of chronic Unpredictable Positive Event Response (UPER) training in male and fem…

Emotional labor and coping strategies of gynecological nurses in recurrent pregnancy loss care: a qualitative phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is marked by multiple pregnancy losses, placing intense emotional and clinical demands on gynecological nurses who often serve as both medical and emotional support for affected patients. While prior research on emotional labor in healthcare underscores the toll of caring for bereaved individuals, few studies have examined the unique, cyclical nature of grief inherent in RPL care. METHODS: A qualitative, phenomenological design was employed to explore the experiences of 12 gynecological nurses working in early pregnancy units. Semi-structured intervi

Lack of provision of social and emotional information about Down syndrome associated with negative prenatal diagnosis experiences.

To determine how physician adherence to recommended practices for discussing Down syndrome (DS) impacts patient experiences, and which of these recommendations most correlate with positive prenatal patient experiences. Online surveys were distributed to mothers of children with DS born between 2016-2021. The descriptions of prenatal experiences were assigned sentiment analysis scores: positive, negative, or neutral. The scores were then compared against the adherence of clinicians to recommended practices for delivering prenatal screening results. Of the 167 patients in this study, over 50% de

Low emotional contagious behavior induces PTSD susceptibility in observers and is related to the regulation of oxytocin receptor in mice.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious psychiatric disorder that occurs after an individual has witnessed or experienced a major traumatic event. Emotional contagion seems to play an important role in witnessing trauma, highlighting the importance of understanding the neurobiological consequences of psychological or emotional stress and its impact on the individual's mental health. Therefore, understanding the relationship between emotional contagion and PTSD susceptibility and the abnormal neurobiological and behavioral changes behind it could help find effective molec

Predicting takotsubo syndrome subtypes: An interpretable machine learning model for differentiating emotional versus physical aetiologies.

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is an acute coronary syndrome characterized by a reversible, mostly apical dysfunction of the left ventricle. Based on the triggering event, TTS has been classified as primary due to emotional causes and secondary due to physical stress. Using a comprehensive machine-learning approach, we aimed to distinguish between these two types of TTS, an essential task for optimizing patient care. METHODS: Based on a dataset of 320 TTS patients from a research group in Rome, a logistic regression model was trained to develop an interpretable predictive model capable

The association between childhood maltreatment and multidimensional sleep health in adolescents at high risk of emotional and behavioral problems.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Impaired sleep following trauma such as childhood maltreatment is both a prognostic factor for future mental illness and a feasible intervention point. Yet, associations between childhood maltreatment and objectively measured sleep components are rarely found. New approaches advance the use of multidimensional sleep health scores instead of individual sleep components. However, no such methodology has been used to study the consequences of maltreatment on sleep health in adolescent cohorts so far. We hypothesized that childhood maltreatment will be associated with poorer slee

Differentiating Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder from other neurodevelopmental disorders: neurocognitive and socio-emotional evidence.

BACKGROUND: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is associated with widespread cognitive, behavioral, and adaptive impairments. Its clinical presentation often overlaps with other neurodevelopmental conditions (ND), such as learning disorders (LD) or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), making differential diagnosis challenging. Although syndrome-specific cognitive patterns have been suggested, a distinctive neurocognitive profile of FASD remains inconclusive. METHOD: Seventy-six children (46 with FASD and 30 with ND), aged 6-15 years (M = 11.00, SD = 2.30), completed a comprehe
