Social and natural environmental factors cause the birth-cohort phenomenon of peptic ulcers by superposition mechanism.

The widely believed Helicobacter pylori infection has never explained the birth-cohort phenomenon of peptic ulcers. Although numerous studies have observed that environmental factors are associated with peptic ulcers, their role in the disease has yet to be identified. A new etiological theory proposed that environmental factors cause peptic ulcers via inducing psychological stress. Starting from this etiology, an integration of the mortality rates caused by social and natural environmental factors reproduced a representative fluctuation curve in the birth-cohort phenomenon, where a causal rol

Evaluating the effectiveness of environmental sustainability indicators in optimizing green-grey infrastructure for sustainable stormwater management.

Green-grey infrastructure is recommended as an innovative stormwater management strategy in response to urban flooding and climate change. Currently, the indicators used to optimize sustainable green-grey infrastructure and evaluate its stormwater management performance have been limited and based on self-defined criteria. In this study, we developed a comprehensive environmental sustainability indicator that integrates reliability, resilience, vulnerability, and hydrological sustainability as one of the objectives for optimizing green-grey infrastructure layout. The new indicator fully consid

Investigating surface area and recovery efficiency of healthcare-associated pathogens to optimize composite environmental sampling.

Hospital surfaces are known to contribute to the spread of healthcare-associated antimicrobial pathogens. Environmental sampling can help locate reservoirs and determine intervention strategies, although sampling and detection can be labor intensive. Composite approaches may help reduce time and costs associated with sampling and detection. We investigated optimum surface areas for sampling antimicrobial-resistant organisms (AROs) with a single side of cellulose sponge, created theoretical composites (TC) by adding recovery results from multiple optimum areas, then compared the TC to the stand

Exploring causal effects and potential mediating mechanisms of genetically linked environmental senses with intracerebral hemorrhage.

The occurrence mechanism of intracerebral hemorrhage remains unclear. Several recent studies have highlighted the close relationship between environmental senses and intracerebral hemorrhage, but the mechanisms of causal mediation are inconclusive. We aimed to investigate the causal relationships and potential mechanisms between environmental senses and intracerebral hemorrhage. Multiple Mendelian randomization methods were used to identify a causal relationship between environmental senses and intracerebral hemorrhage. Gut microbiota and brain imaging phenotypes were used to find possible med

Bacteria of the order Burkholderiales are original environmental hosts of type II trimethoprim resistance genes (dfrB).

It is consensus that clinically relevant antibiotic resistance genes have their origin in environmental bacteria, including the large pool of primarily benign species. Yet, for the vast majority of acquired antibiotic resistance genes, the original environmental host(s) has not been identified to date. Closing this knowledge gap could improve our understanding of how antimicrobial resistance proliferates in the bacterial domain and shed light on the crucial step of initial resistance gene mobilization in particular. Here, we combine information from publicly available long- and short-read envi

Spatial distribution and environmental correlations of Culex pipiens pallens (Diptera: Culicidae) in Haidian district, Beijing.

Culex pipiens pallens Coquillett, 1898 (Diptera: Culicidae) was the dominant health threat to mosquito species in Beijing, and it is important to unravel the spatial distribution and environmental correlations of Cx. pipiens pallens in Beijing. 3S technology methods and spatial statistics were used to clarify the distribution pattern. Subsequently, linear and spatial regression were performed to detect the environmental factors linked with the density of Cx. pipiens pallens. The same "middle peak" spatial distribution pattern was observed for Cx. pipiens pallens density at the community, subdi

Host and environmental factors shape upper airway microbiota and respiratory health across the human lifespan.

Our understanding of the normal variation in the upper respiratory tract (URT) microbiota across the human lifespan and how these relate to host, environment, and health is limited. We studied the microbiota of 3,104 saliva (<10 year-olds)/oropharynx (≥10 year-olds) and 2,485 nasopharynx samples of 3,160 Dutch individuals 0-87 years of age, participating in a cross-sectional population-wide study (PIENTER-3) using 16S-rRNA sequencing. The microbiota composition was strongly related to age, especially in the nasopharynx, with maturation occurring throughout childhood and adolescence. Clear nich

Eco-emotions as the planetary boundaries: framing human emotional and planetary health in the global environmental crisis.

BACKGROUND: Affective processes play an important role in physical and mental health and in adaptation responses to the global environmental crisis. Eco-emotions-emotions that are substantially associated with the environment and anthropogenic changes happening within it-are complex and culturally varied. Despite the disproportionate impact of the global environmental crisis on low-income and middle-income countries, most psychological research to date has been conducted in high-income countries and has focused on climate change and negative climate emotions (eg, climate anxiety). The absence

Using drugs alone in single room occupancy housing: Understanding environmental drivers of overdose risk.

BACKGROUND: Across North America most overdose deaths occur in housing, largely due to individuals using drugs alone. In cities, fatalities are disproportionately concentrated in low-income housing, including single room occupancy (SRO) housing. While research has highlighted how SROs operate as risk environments for various poor outcomes, there has been little attention to specific drug use practices (i.e., using alone) associated with overdose vulnerability in these spaces. This study explores how environmental contexts of SROs shape overdose risks, with specific attention to practices of us

Do Children's Health Behaviors Buffer the Impact of Cumulative Environmental Stress on Emerging Cardiometabolic Risk?

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found that exposure to childhood environmental stress is associated with cardiometabolic risk. However, it is not known whether individual health behaviors disrupt this relationship. This study prospectively evaluated the relationship between cumulative environmental stress in a low-income sample and cardiometabolic risk in middle childhood and examined whether child health behaviors attenuated this relationship. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a cohort of children (n=338; 57% Hispanic children; 25% Black children), environmental stressors (family and neighborhood fa

Risk Perception and Psychosocial Factors Influencing Exposure to Antimicrobial Resistance through Environmental Pathways in Malawi.

Antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria are prevalent in household and environmental settings in low-income locations. However, there are limited data on individuals' understanding of AMR bacteria exposure risks in these settings. A cross-sectional study was conducted to identify individual risk perception of AMR bacteria and its associated behavioral determinants at the household level in urban, peri-urban, and rural Malawi. We conducted interviews with 529 participants from 300 households (n = 100 households/site). The risk, attitude, norms, ability, and self-regulation model was used to asse

Balancing growth and preservation: Unravelling Africa's carbon-economic nexus through the environmental kuznets curve.

Africa is vulnerable to the challenges of global climate change, which poses a significant obstacle to achieving economic development while protecting the environment. Despite numerous Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) studies, evidence remains inconclusive, especially in African countries. This study delves into the carbon-economic nexus within the EKC framework across 46 African countries from 1990 to 2020. Utilizing advanced econometric techniques such as Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) modeling based on the Pooled Mean Group (PMG) estimator, Common Correlated Effects Pooled Mean Gro
