1. An improved assay for the enzyme phosphatidylinositol kinase is described. The kinase activity is increased more than 10-fold by the addition of mercaptoethanol and exogenous phosphatidylinositol in the presence of Triton X-100. The enzyme is solubilized by non-ionic detergents. 2. Phosphatidylinositol kinase is inhibited by physiological concentrations of ADP and by similar levels of adenosine. STUDY DESIGN: Levels of four papaya cysteine proteinases were determined in Chymodiactin, a pharmaceutical preparation of chymopapain (EC 3.4.22.6) used in chemonucleolysis for the treatment of sciatica. The aim of this work is to investigate the presence of Coxiella burnetii in Perameles bougainville and their ticks on two islands off Western Australia. Haemaphysalis humerosa, Haemaphysalis ratti, and Haemaphysalis lagostrophi were collected from P. bougainville on Bernier and Dorre Islands from 2005 to 2007; only Amblyomma limbatum was collected from humans over the same interval. One of 13 tick samples and 1 of 12 P. bougainville fecal samples were positive for C. burnetii DNA using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. DNA fragments had >99% similarity to published C. burnetii sequences.

BACKGROUND: Renal transplant recipients are susceptible to viral infections because of their immunocompromised background. HTLV-1 is a retrovirus that leads to adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma or myelopathies. This study aimed to evaluate HTLV-1 antibodies among renal transplant recipients in Urmia, Iran.

A selective adsorbent for thyroid peroxidase was prepared by attaching tyrosine, a possible substrate of peroxidase, to agarose beads. When partially purified calf thyroid peroxidase was passed through a column containing this adsorbent, the peroxidase activity present was bound to the agarose.
