Delfly Flex: a flapping wing micro air vehicle with a bio-inspired unibody composed of compliant joints.

Flying insects' thorax houses the flight muscles that provide efficient, multi-axis wing actuation. Such bio-inspiration is essential for developing future flapping wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) that combine advanced maneuverability with design simplicity, low weight, and high power efficiency. In this work, we propose a novel unibody with distributed compliant joints inspired by the multiple degrees of actuation freedom of an insect thorax-in particular, wing stroke plane modulation for active pitch and yaw-yielding a compact multifunctional structural component for the 24.6 g FWMAV:Delfly

But doctor, will I be able to drive? Car mirror placement design and viewing angles required for safe binocular vision for drivers.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To examine the angle between the driver's eye and the three mirrors (side and rear-view) across different vehicle models, in order to understand head and gaze adjustments that may be necessary for post-strabismus surgery patients to reduce diplopia while driving. METHODS: The driver's eye angle (DEA) was defined as the horizontal angle between the driver's line of sight when looking straight ahead and the direction of their gaze required to view the centre of a given mirror. Angles were measured using a digital protractor from a single 69 inch (1.75 m) tall driver's eye posit

Development of an animatronic headform test method for determining the efficacy of medical masks and barrier face coverings-part 1: total filtration efficacy.

The effectiveness of face coverings against respiratory viruses is crucial for public health but often lacks realistic performance assessments of protection and comfort. In this study, a system-level test method was developed using an animatronic headform to incorporate fit and dynamic wear into the assessment of total filtration efficacy of medical masks and barrier face coverings. Six commercially available products were evaluated, including an N95 respirator as the control. Total filtration efficacy was calculated from differential particle counts recorded inside and outside of face coverin

Graphene oxide functionalized side-polished sampled fiber grating biosensor for highly sensitive detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

A graphene oxide functionalized side-polished sampled fiber grating (GO-SPSFG) biosensor is proposed for highly sensitive detection of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The sensing structure is obtained by combining femtosecond laser line-by-line scanning technology and precise mechanical side-polishing. The fabricated sampled grating exhibits characteristics of both Bragg gratings and long-period gratings for effectively decoupling temperature in the sensing measurement. The generated evanescent field can be further enhanced by asymmetrically polishing the clad

Hollow-Structured Advanced Footwear Technology Improves Running Economy Through Enhanced Energy Storage and Return in Sub-3-Hour Non-Rearfoot Strike Marathon Runners.

This study investigated the effects of a hollow-structured advanced footwear technology (HAFT) compared with a normal advanced footwear technology (NAFT) on running economy (RE) and lower-limb biomechanics in habitual non-rearfoot strike (NRFS) runners. Sixteen male NRFS runners completed biomechanical and metabolic testing under both footwear conditions at a constant speed of 15 km/h. Compared with NAFT, the HAFT reduced energy cost by 2.9% after corrected for shoe mass (HAFT: 14.54 ± 1.00 W/kg; NAFT: 14.98 ± 1.09 W/kg; p = 0.001). Meanwhile, when running in the HAFT, which featured greater m

Evaluation of a novel dual-headed toothbrush design for periodontal health: split- mouth randomized blind clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Optimal oral health largely depends on the successful removal of plaque through effective brushing, but success typically relies on user technique, time, and adherence. The aim was to compare the effectiveness of a newly introduced dual-headed toothbrush with a conventional single-headed toothbrush in control of plaque and gingival health using a split-mouth design. METHODS: In the study, 37 dental professionals used two types of toothbrushes: a dual-headed toothbrush on one side of the mouth (Test side) and a conventional single-headed toothbrush on the other side (Control side).

ProBot: Robot-Ultrasound Probe for Transrectal and Transperineal Prostate Biopsy.

OBJECTIVE: Over the past decade the incidence of prostate cancer (PCa) has been on a steady increase. Efforts to improve PCa outcome include targeted biopsy with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and precision sampling. Several biopsy devices are currently available to guide the biopsy with MRI-ultrasound fusion. They commonly use generic handheld ultrasound probes retrofitted for fusion biopsy. Robotic probe manipulation has the potential to reduce the required training, skills, and outcome variability among urologists. Rather than retrofitting an ultrasound probe, we developed a novel cohesiv

A Bench Evaluation of the Effects of Circuit Configurations on Instrumental Dead Space During Home Mechanical Ventilation.

BACKGROUND: A number of circuit configurations can be proposed for implementing mechanical ventilation, most of which are likely to impact the instrumental dead space and thus, on alveolar ventilation. This bench study was designed to investigate the effects of circuit configuration on PCO2 with constant ventilator settings (iso-VT condition; VT: tidal volume) and to evaluate the modifications of VT required to maintain stable alveolar ventilation with each circuit configuration (iso-PETCO2 condition; end-tidal CO2 partial pressure being considered as a surrogate for alveolar ventilation). Normothermic machine perfusion applications in kidney transplantation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) has emerged as technology for organ preservation and assessment. While NMP has been widely adopted for liver, lung, and heart transplantation, kidney NMP has faced slower clinical integration. Normothermic perfusion may potentially improve kidney transplant through improved preservation, graft viability assessment, mitigation of ischemia reperfusion injury, and treatment prior to transplant. The purpose of this review is to highlight the applications of NMP in kidney transplantation. RECENT FINDINGS: Kidney NMP has been proven well toler

A GAVeCeLT-IVAS bundle for Safe Insertion of Long Peripheral Catheters: The SILPeC protocol.

In an increasingly complex clinical setting, long peripheral catheters (LPC) are rapidly gaining popularity and represent an effective option for the administration of medications and fluids, especially for patients with difficult venous access. However, inconsistencies in the literature, particularly regarding terminology and insertion techniques, have contributed to significant variability in clinical outcomes. To standardize and promote a safer and more effective insertion of these catheters, the Italian Group of Long-Term Venous Access Devices (GAVeCeLT) and the Italian Vascular Access Soc

A representative mechanistic model of multisolute transport in low-flow hollow-fiber dialyzers for wearable artificial kidney-oriented design.

To support the analysis of compact hollow-fiber dialyzers operated under low-flow conditions relevant to wearable artificial kidney development, a mechanistic model of multisolute transport was developed. Unlike conventional homogeneous-membrane descriptions, the dialysis membrane was represented as a three-layer asymmetric porous structure. Within a continuum framework, pore-scale hindered diffusion, ultrafiltration-driven convection, and transmembrane hydraulics were coupled to describe diffusion-convection transport under low-flow conditions. Comparisons with manufacturer-stylein vitroclear

Design and in vitro evaluation of a parallel gas-exchange chambers oxygenator with reduced hemolysis and pressure drop.

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic complications remain a major limitation of membrane oxygenators in clinical support. Compared with human lungs, most commercial oxygenators generate substantial pressure drops and high shear stress, increasing the risks of hemolysis. Therefore, we aimed to develop a membrane oxygenator that reduces pressure drop and shear-induced blood damage while maintaining the oxygen transfer rate. METHODS: We propose a parallel gas exchange chamber (PGEC) oxygenator in which the blood flow is divided into two identical gas exchange chambers connected in parallel. The computational f

A Comparison of 18-Gauge and 20-Gauge Short Peripheral Catheters in Terms of Pain and Procedural Difficulty: A Randomized Controlled Trial in the Emergency Department.

Background and Objectives: Clinicians often default to the narrower short peripheral catheter (SPC), believing wider catheters to be more painful and harder to insert. One previous randomized trial found no difference, but it neither selected patients by measured access risk nor interpreted the result against a prespecified threshold of clinical importance. We conducted a confirmatory trial addressing both, comparing 18-gauge and 20-gauge SPCs in adult emergency department patients at low-to-moderate risk of difficult access. Materials and Methods: In a single-center, parallel-group superiorit

Can seat suspensions mitigate motion sickness and enhance vibration comfort while being driven? A subjective assessment of the K-Seat.

Prolonged exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) is a key contributor to motion discomfort in vehicles, including motion sickness and ride comfort. This issue becomes more compelling in automated vehicles, where occupants are expected to frequently engage in non-driving-related activities and will expect high comfort levels. Hence, enhancing seat design to mitigate WBV is essential for improving ride comfort across vehicle types. Therefore, this study, which primarily addresses vertical accelerations, optimized an existing seat suspension (K-Seat) and subjectively assessed discomfort using 24

A novel robot-assisted flexible ureteroscope system(RAFUS): design, learning curve, ergonomics, and preclinical feasibility.

Traditional manual flexible ureteroscopy imposes a steep learning curve and severe ergonomic burdens. Furthermore, many existing robotic systems lack integrated optical fiber manipulation. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents the design and evaluation of a novel RAFUS that achieves precise control over four key degrees of freedom, including automated laser fiber delivery, via a miniaturized operating handle. For systematic evaluation via an integrated experimental platform, learning curve analysis was conducted, and a novel mean amplitude spectral density (MASD) metric was combin
