The sensitivity of different methods for detecting abnormalities in auditory nerve function.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CIs) have become important for the treatment of severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Meanwhile, electrically evoked compound action potentials (ECAPs) and electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses (EABRs), which can be examined and evaluated with minimal patient cooperation, have become more reliable for tone measurement and speech recognition postoperatively. However, few studies have compared the electrophysiological characteristics of the auditory nerve using ECAPs and EABRs under different functional states of the auditory nerve (FSANs

The effect of stimulus envelope shape on the auditory steady-state response.

Auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) are auditory evoked potentials that reflect phase-locked neural activity to periodic stimuli. ASSRs are often evoked by tones with a modulated envelope, with sinusoidal envelopes being most common. However, it is unclear if and how the shape of the envelope affects ASSR responses. In this study, we used various trapezoidal modulated tones to evoke ASSRs (modulation frequency = 40 Hz) and studied the effect of four envelope parameters: attack time, hold time, decay time and off time. ASSR measurements in 20 normal hearing subjects showed that envelope sha…

Changes in tonal audiometry in children with progressive sensorineural hearing loss and history of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit discharge. A 20 year long-term follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: Newborns from Neonatal intensive care units (NICU) are at high-risk for sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) a follow-up is needed for early diagnosis and intervention. Our objective here was to describe the features and changes of SNHL at different periods during a follow-up of almost 20 years. METHODS: Risk factors for SNHL during development were analyzed. The audiological examination included: Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP), and Transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE). At birth; tonal audiometry (between 125 and 8000 Hz), and tympanometry were performed at 5, 1…

Searching for biomarkers of CDKL5 disorder: early-onset visual impairment in CDKL5 mutant mice.

CDKL5 disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder still without a cure. Murine models of CDKL5 disorder have been recently generated raising t … P28 both in heterozygous and homozygous CDKL5 mutant mice. These results were confirmed by visually evoked potentials (VEPs) recorded from the visual cortex of a different cohort. The previously imaged mice were also analyzed at P60-80 using VEPs, revealing a persistent reduction of response amplitude, reduced visual acuity and defective contrast function. The leve …

Prolonged low-level noise-induced plasticity in the peripheral and central auditory system of rats.

Prolonged low-level noise exposure alters loudness perception in humans, presumably by decreasing the gain of the central auditory system. Here we test the central gain hypothesis by measuring the acute and chronic physiologic changes at the level of the cochlea and inferior colliculus (IC) after a 75-dB SPL, 10-20-kHz noise exposure for 5weeks. The compound action potential (CAP) and summating potential (SP) were used to assess the functional status of the cochlea and 16 channel electrodes were used to measure the local field potentials (LFP) and multi-unit spike discharge rates (SDR) from th

Can Animal Models Contribute to Understanding Tinnitus Heterogeneity in Humans?

The brain activity of humans with tinnitus of various etiologies is typically studied with electro- and magneto-encephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging-based imaging techniques. Consequently, they measure population responses and mostly from the neocortex. The latter also underlies changes in neural networks that may be attributed to tinnitus. However, factors not strictly related to tinnitus such as hearing loss and hyperacusis, as well as other co-occurring disorders play a prominent role in these changes. Different types of tinnitus can often not be resolved with these bra

Axonal Terminals Exposed to Amyloid-β May Not Lead to Pre-Synaptic Axonal Damage.

BACKGROUND: Synaptic deficits and neuronal loss are the major pathological manifestations of Alzheimer's disease. However, the link between … ignificant changes observed in this study were delayed transduction and reduced amplitude of visual evoked potentials, although both Aβ and its reversed form caused similar changes. CONCLUSION: Despite the published in vitro studies, there was no significant axonal damage in the optic nerve and optic tract after injecting Aβ onto retinal ganglion cell axonal termi …

Neural correlates of face and object perception in an awake chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) examined by scalp-surface event-related potentials.

BACKGROUND: The neural system of our closest living relative, the chimpanzee, is a topic of increasing research interest. However, electrophysiological examinations of neural activity during visual processing in awake chimpanzees are currently lacking. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In the present report, skin-surface event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were measured while a fully awake chimpanzee observed photographs of faces and objects in two experiments. In Experiment 1, human faces and stimuli composed of scrambled face images were displayed. In Experiment 2, three types of pictures (

Central deafness in a young child with Moyamoya disease: paternal linkage in a Caucasian family: two case reports and a review of the literature.

A case of 'central deafness' is presented in a 3-year-old male Caucasian child with Moyamoya disease (MMD); a rare, progressive and occlusive cerebrovascular disorder predominantly affecting the carotid artery system. Documentation of normal peripheral auditory function and brainstem pathway integrity is provided by acoustic admittance, otoacoustic emission and brainstem auditory evoked potential measurements. The lack of behavioral response to sound, and absent middle and long latency auditory evoked potentials suggest thalamo-cortical dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging showed diffuse is…

Differential modulation of hippocampal signal transfer by tuberomammillary nucleus stimulation in freely moving rats dependent on behavioral state.

Tuberomammillary histamine neurons (TM) in the posterior hypothalamus project to extensive parts of the brain, including the hippocampal formation. The purpose of the present experiments was to investigate whether activation of the TM modulates signal transfer from the perforant pathway (PP) or ventral hippocampal commissure (VHC) to the dentate gyrus (DG) in freely moving rats. Paired pulses of electrical stimulation were delivered to PP or VHC, and evoked field potentials (fEPSPs and pop spikes) were recorded in the DG. Before activating PP or VHC, the TM was triggered by electrical stimulat

Motor reorganization after upper limb amputation in man. A study with focal magnetic stimulation.

To evaluate reorganization in motor pathways following amputation, we studied motor evoked potentials (MEPs) to transcranial magnetic stimulation in 7 patients with unilateral upper limb amputations, a patient with congenital absence of a hand, and 10 normal subjects. Electromyographic recordings were made from biceps and deltoid muscles immediately proximal to the stump and the same contralateral muscles. Magnetic stimulation was delivered by a Cadwell MES-10 magnetic stimulator through a 'figure eight' magnetic coil over scalp positions separated by 1-2.5 cm. Maximal M responses were elicite…

Muscarine induces two distinct current responses in adrenal chromaffin cells of the guinea-pig.

Muscarine-induced membrane responses were studied in dissociated chromaffin cells of the guinea-pig adrenal medulla, using the whole-cell version of the patch-clamp technique. Bath application of muscarine (1-10 microM) produced two distinct current responses at a holding potential of -40 mV. One is an inward current associated with an increase in current noise. This current response was sustained during stimulation and had a reversal potential of 4.5 +/- 3.4 mV (n = 6) with a negative slope conductance below about -30 mV in 12.5 mM K(+)-containing perfusate. The other is a transient outward c

Induction of long-term potentiation-like plasticity in the primary motor cortex with repeated anodal transcranial direct current stimulation - Better effects with intensified protocols?

BACKGROUND: A single session of anodal tDCS induces LTP-like plasticity which lasts for about 1 h, while repetition of stimulation within a time interval of 30 min results in late-phase effects lasting for at least 24 h with standard stimulation protocols. OBJECTIVE: In this pilot study, we explored if the after-effects of a recently developed intensified single session stimulation protocol are relevantly prolonged in the motor cortex by repetition of this intervention. METHODS: 16 healthy right-handed subjects participated in this study. The effects of an intensified (3 mA-20min) and a stan
