Conditions of experienced stigma in people living with HIV in Iran: a qualitative comparative analysis.

Stigma against people living with HIV (PLWH) seriously affects their quality of life. Moreover it can lead them to hide their HIV status from others, which in turn endangers public health. Many studies dealing with HIV-related stigma focus on the consequences of this phenomenon and pay less attention to the social conditions which affect different types of HIV-related stigma (anticipated, internalized and enacted stigma [ES]). Therefore, in this study, we tried to achieve more understanding about effective causal conditions of various types of experienced stigma. First of all, data were collec

Early dynamics of white matter deficits in children developing dyslexia.

Neural anomalies have been demonstrated in dyslexia. Recent studies in pre-readers at risk for dyslexia and in pre-readers developing poor reading suggest that these anomalies might be a cause of their reading impairment. Our study goes one step further by exploring the neurodevelopmental trajectory of white matter anomalies in pre-readers with and without a familial risk for dyslexia (n=61) of whom a strictly selected sample develops dyslexia later on (n=15). We collected longitudinal diffusion MRI and behavioural data until grade 3. The results provide evidence that children with dyslexia ex

The long-term effectiveness of the Family Check-Up on school-age conduct problems: Moderation by neighborhood deprivation.

Several studies suggest that neighborhood deprivation is a unique risk factor in child and adolescent development of problem behavior. We sought to examine whether previously established intervention effects of the Family Check-Up (FCU) on child conduct problems at age 7.5 would persist through age 9.5, and whether neighborhood deprivation would moderate these effects. In addition, we examined whether improvements in parent-child interaction during early childhood associated with the FCU would be related to later reductions in child aggression among families living in the highest risk neighbor

A review of the father-child relationship in the development and maintenance of adolescent anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

There are disproportionately fewer studies examining the role of the father in the development of child and adolescent psychopathology. This is pertinent in the field of eating disorders, where there is a wealth of research related to family influences and the value of family-based interventions. This article reviews the key themes within the literature around the potential impact of the father-child relationship on the development and maintenance of Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa in young people. The critical review searched relevant health and social care databases, as well as manually searchi

Dual protection: more needed than practised or understood.

Although non-barrier contraceptive use has become a global norm, unprotected sex in relation to sexually transmitted infections remains the norm almost everywhere. Dual protection is protection from unwanted pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, and is a form of safer sex for heterosexual couples that is more needed than practised or understood. This paper draws on a review of the literature in family planning, obstetrics and gynaecology, and AIDS-related journals from 1998 to early 2005. Definitions of dual protection, found mainly in family planning literature, are very n

A family study of Tourette syndrome in Japan.

Although the mode of inheritance remains in doubt, twin and family studies conducted mostly in the United States and western Europe suggest that genetic factors play an important role in the transmission and expression of Tourette syndrome (TS). In an effort to evaluate population-based genetic differences, we generated risk estimates for first-degree relatives of TS probands in Japan using methods similar to those utilized in recent Western studies. The subjects were 52 TS probands seen at an outpatient clinic of Tokyo University Hospital and their 165 first-degree relatives. All probands and

Profiling family resilience in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a network analysis approach to identifying intervention targets.

AIM: This study aimed to explore the status of and the factors influencing family resilience among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and caregivers and to construct a related structural model and system of influencing factors for family resilience based on network analysis methods. Furthermore, the study aimed to identify the core variables in the network, explore the interaction mechanisms and pathways of different variables, and provide an intervention basis and direction for the improvement of resilience in COPD families. DESIGN: The study employed a cross-sectiona

Role of family history and clinical screening in the identification of families with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy in Johannesburg, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Familial disease is implicated in 20 - 50% of cases of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM) worldwide. The contribution of familial factors to IDCM in the Johannesburg area, South Africa, is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To describe the demographic details of patients with IDCM who presented at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH), and to determine if there is evidence of familial disease through family history assessment and clinical screening of relatives. METHODS: This was a single-centre, cohort study performed at a quaternary care centre at CMJAH. Fifty unrelat

Brain structures with stronger genetic associations are not less associated with family- and state-level economic contexts.

We investigate whether neural, cognitive, and psychopathology phenotypes that are more strongly related to genetic differences are less strongly associated with family- and state-level economic contexts (N = 5374 individuals with 1KG-EUR-like genotypes with 870 twins, from the Adolescent Behavior and Cognitive Development study). We estimated the twin- and SNP-based heritability of each phenotype, as well as its association with an educational attainment polygenic index (EA PGI). We further examined associations with family socioeconomic status (SES) and tested whether SES-related differences

Phenotypic and Genotypic Characterization of NPRL2-Related Epilepsy: Two Case Reports and Literature Review.

The phenotype of nitrogen permease regulator-like 2 (NPRL2) gene-related epilepsy clinically manifests as a range of epilepsy syndromes, including familial focal epilepsy with variable foci (FFEVF), sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE), temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), and infantile spasms (IS). The association between phenotype and genotype of NPRL2 variants has not been widely explored. This study aimed to explore the phenotype and genotype spectrum of NPRL2-related epilepsy. Here, we presented two clinical cases with NPRL2-related epilepsy, and discussed the cha

WHIMP links the actin nucleation machinery to Src-family kinase signaling during protrusion and motility.

Cell motility is governed by cooperation between the Arp2/3 complex and nucleation-promoting factors from the Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Protein (WASP) family, which together assemble actin filament networks to drive membrane protrusion. Here we identify WHIMP (WAVE Homology In Membrane Protrusions) as a new member of the WASP family. The Whimp gene is encoded on the X chromosome of a subset of mammals, including mice. Murine WHIMP promotes Arp2/3-dependent actin assembly, but is less potent than other nucleation factors. Nevertheless, WHIMP-mediated Arp2/3 activation enhances both plasma membra

"Just keep pushing": Parents' experiences of accessing child and adolescent mental health services for child anxiety problems.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychopathologies in childhood; however, a high proportion of children with anxiety disorders do not access effective treatments. The aim of the present qualitative study was to understand families' experiences of seeking help and accessing specialist treatment for difficulties with childhood anxiety. METHODS: Parents of 16 children (aged 7-12 years) referred to a child mental health service for difficulties with anxiety were interviewed about their experiences of seeking and accessing treatment within Child and Adolescent Mental Health

A comfortable place to say goodbye.

No death is easy, but we hope to die peacefully, with our loved ones surrounding us, comforted by each other's presence and the knowledge that the right decision has been made. The nurse's actions in the intensive care unit setting can promote hope for a comfortable place to say goodbye for the patient and his/her loved ones and the nursing staff and physicians. When nurses make the intensive care unit a comfortable place for the dying patients and their loved ones, we also make the patients' deaths comfortable for us. The problems encountered in implementing end-of-life care are explored in t

Familial resemblance for hostility: the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Family Heart Study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine whether several aspects of hostility as measured by the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale (ie, aggressive responding, hostile affect, cynicism, and overall hostility score) were determined in part by family factors (ie, genes and/or familial environments). METHODS: Analyses were based on 680 European-American families (2525 individuals) from the NHLBI Family Heart Study (FHS), a population-based study of genetic and nongenetic determinants of CHD, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular risk factors. The influence of family relationships, age, and edu…

Clinical factors affecting physicians' management decisions in cases of female partner abuse.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study determined which clinical factors influence Canadian primary care physicians' management decisions in cases of female partner abuse. METHODS: We used a cross-sectional survey design and randomly sampled (n = 2,014) English-speaking Canadian physicians with a primary interest in family or general practice who were practicing in any of the 12 provinces and territories in Canada and who were active in private practice and registered to prescribe. Respondents completed a questionnaire that required them to score management decision plans in response to case s

Coping in family supporters of elderly people with dementia.

Research into supporters of elderly people with dementia has a brief but significant history. Initially, research sought to establish the nature and extent of the distress that supporters endured in the fulfilment of their caring role. More recently, researchers have turned their attention towards the identification of coping techniques used by supporters in the community. The Dundee Study of Supporters and Dementia is concerned with factors associated with the maintenance and care of the demented elderly in the community, and with the impact of dementia on family supporters. A total of 228 fa
