BACKGROUND: Inclusion body myositis is the most frequent myositis in patients older than 50 years. Classical immunosuppressants are ineffective in treating inclusion body myositis, and to date there are no recommendations for pharmacological approaches to treatment. Exogenous lipoid pneumonia is a rare alveolar-filling disorder characterized by foreign body reaction to inhaled/aspirated hydrocarbon that may be vegetable oil, animal fat, or mineral oil. It is vanishingly rare and often missed except in the classical clinical settings of acute aspiration of petroleum products. We present a toddler with iatrogenic exogenous lipoid pneumonia and highlight clinical and radiological clues that can prompt early recognition of this entity.

Extreme thigh lipodystrophy localized in a "saddlebag" distribution can be difficult to treat with conventional body-lift approaches. We present a case of extreme thigh lipodystrophy treated with suction lipectomy and direct excision of skin and fat. The circular defects were closed with pursestring sutures and yielded a greatly improved contour and minimal iatrogenic deformity or scarring. In properly selected patients, the pursestring thigh-lift can provide a superior esthetic result.

A 35-year-old woman had a 4-year history of skin depression on the right side of both the forehead and chin. A biopsy specimen showed a normal dermis and an absence of subcutaneous tissue. She also had Poland syndrome on the left side of the body, with loss of the sternocostal portion of the greater pectoral muscle. Significant cosmetic improvement was achieved with dermal fat grafts and silicone implants.

Although newer antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens have reduced the severity of lipodystrophy syndrome (LS), people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) still report body fat changes. The present observations are derived from 273 girls and women aged 7-40 years participating in the National Institutes of Health natural history study of Turner syndrome (TS) in the interval 2001-2011. The effect of Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV) on selected fitness parameters of stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans … layed tissue tropism similar to that observed in house fly hosts, with higher viral copy numbers in fat body and salivary glands compared with ovaries. Virus titers were approximately 2 orders of magnitude higher in house fly than in stable fly hosts, and this difference was probably due to the absence of salivary gland hypertrophy in the latter species.
