Prevalence of multidrug-resistant and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing gram-negative bacilli: A meta-analysis report in Ethiopia.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacterial isolates have emerged as a global threat to human health. Little is known about the overall prevalence of multidrug resistance profile and ESBL-producing gram-negative bacilli (GNB) in Ethiopia. Therefore, this meta-analysis was performed to produce proportional estimates of multidrug resistance and ESBL-producing GNB in Ethiopia. A web-based search was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, Research Gate, Scopus and other databases. Articles published till 2019 on the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance pr

Population structure of KPC carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in a long-term acute-care rehabilitation facility: identification of a new lineage of clonal group 101, associated with local hyperendemicity.

In this work, we used a whole-genome sequencing (WGS) approach to study the features of KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) spreading in a large Italian long-term acute-care rehabilitation facility (LTACRF), and to track the dynamics of dissemination within this setting. Thirty-eight, non-replicated, KPC-Kp isolates from colonized patients (either already colonized at admission or colonized during admission), collected during 2016, were subjected to antimicrobial-susceptibility testing and WGS. All isolates were resistant to β-lactams, with the exception of ceftazidime/avibactam (97.4

Spontaneously Occurring Small-Colony Variants of Staphylococcus aureus Show Enhanced Clearance by THP-1 Macrophages.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common cause of chronic and relapsing infection, especially when the ability of the immune system to sterilize a focus of infection is compromised (e.g., because of a foreign body or in the cystic fibrosis lung). Chronic infections are associated with slow-growing colony phenotypes of S. aureus on solid media termed small-colony variants (SCVs). Stable SCVs show characteristic mutations in the electron transport chain that convey resistance to antibiotics, particularly aminoglycosides. This can be used to identify SCVs from within mixed-colony phenotype populations o

Management of Fever in Infants and Young Children.

Despite dramatic reductions in the rates of bacteremia and meningitis since the 1980s, febrile illness in children younger than 36 months continues to be a concern with potentially serious consequences. Factors that suggest serious infection include age younger than one month, poor arousability, petechial rash, delayed capillary refill, increased respiratory effort, and overall physician assessment. Urinary tract infections are the most common serious bacterial infection in children younger than three years, so evaluation for such infections should be performed in those with unexplained fever.

Antimicrobial Treatment of Human Plague: A Systematic Review of the Literature on Individual Cases, 1937-2019.

BACKGROUND: Yersinia pestis remains endemic in Africa, Asia, and the Americas and is a known bioterrorism agent. Treatment with aminoglycosides such as streptomycin or gentamicin is effective when initiated early in illness but can have serious side effects. Alternatives such as fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, and sulfonamides are potentially safer but lack robust human data on efficacy. METHODS: We searched PubMed Central, Medline, Embase, and other databases for articles in any language with terms related to plague and antimicrobials. Articles that contained case-level information on antim

A case control study of Salmonella SPP. infection in stray dogs in Tehran shelters and the correlation between paraclinical tests results and clinical findings.

Salmonellosis as a zoonotic disease in dogs is not fully understood, and various reports have pointed to the transmission of antibiotic-resistant salmonella from dogs to humans. The current study aimed to evaluate the serologic and bacteriologic prevalence of Salmonella spp. in stray dogs placed in animal shelters around Tehran, compare the results to those of asymptomatic dogs, and determine the serotype of isolated species, as well as their antibiotic susceptibility pattern. A total of 100 fecal swab and blood samples were obtained from symptomatic and apparently healthy dogs (clinically) pl
