Factors associated with PEP awareness among adolescent girls and young women in Eswatini.

INTRODUCTION: In Eswatini, HIV incidence among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), aged 15-24 years, is 10 times that of their male peers. Despite the World Health Organization's 2014 recommendation for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to be available for all HIV exposures, it has been underutilized among youth. PEP is an effective prevention method, and a better understanding of the characteristics, risk factors and behaviours that are associated with PEP awareness, as a precursor to effective use, is needed. METHODS: Using data from the 2022 Eswatini Violence Against Children and Youth

"I just thought I was lucky to be protected from HIV:" Qualitative evaluation of barriers and facilitators of pre-exposure prophylaxis use for adolescent girls and young women at higher risk of HIV acquisition in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) are at higher risk of HIV acquisition than their male counterparts, especially in sub-Saharan African countries such as Malawi. Therefore, HIV prevention programming is a key component to reducing this risk. We conducted a formative qualitative assessment with AGYW and their health providers to understand AGYW's perceptions of their own HIV risk, self-efficacy to protect themselves, and the implications of these factors on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use. Our study found that AGYW are aware and interested in using PrEP, which can allow choices that p

TB will never end because of us: Experiences of TB preventive treatment among people living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, particularly for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). TB preventive treatment (TPT) has been found to reduce the risk of TB among PLWHA. As TPT has become a standard component of HIV care, understanding client-level perceptions and knowledge of TPT is crucial to optimizing uptake. METHODS: This qualitative sub-study was conducted within a cluster-randomized trial evaluating a TPT initiation strategy in two provinces of South Africa. The qualitative component explored patient understanding and experiences with HIV, TB, and

Perceptions of HPV-Linked Oropharyngeal Cancer Risk Messages Among a Sample of Young Adult Men in the US: A Pilot Study.

Awareness of risk for oropharyngeal cancer from oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is low among men in the United States. This pilot study tested messages communicating oral HPV and oropharyngeal cancer risk among a sample of U.S. young adult men (aged 18-26). Six oral HPV and cancer risk messages were tested in an online survey. Participants (N = 68) were randomly assigned to one of two message sets, each containing three unique text-based messages. Participants evaluated messages separately based on various measures (e.g., perceived message effectiveness [PME], novelty). One-way repea

Orchestrating rhythms in autism care: enacting parental expertise in and through time.

This article delves into the underexplored relationship between lay expertise and temporality by analysing semi-structured interviews with parents who treat their autistic children using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The analysis indicates that time and temporalities play a significant role in how parents construct and enact their expertise. Faced with uncertainty, urgency, and inadequate support from medical and educational systems, parents assumed crucial responsibilities in managing their children's therapies. Over time, they acquired knowledge and skills, ultimately claimin
