Anatomical quadrilateral plate for acetabulum fractures involving quadrilateral surface: A review.

INTRODUCTION: The management of acetabulum fractures in osteoporotic elderly, as well as comminuted fractures in younger patients is likely to be difficult. These fractures need specific fixation techniques especially when the quadrilateral plate is involved. Standard implants may not be able to adequately support the fixation, so newer pre-shaped fixation plates have been proposed with some of these already in use. The concept of anatomic plates has come up for many fracture locations for providing a better buttress effect to the comminuted fragments. There has been a need to look for an anat

Increasing Trends of Pediatric Thoracic and Lumbar Spine Fractures in the United States from 2004 to 2023: A 20-year National Injury Review Depicting Shifts in Mechanisms of Injury.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the thoracic and lumbar spine are uncommon injuries in children and adolescents, but they carry substantial morbidity and a real risk of death. Compared with the adult spine, the pediatric spine has unique anatomic and biomechanical properties that yield different fracture patterns than the adult population. The mechanisms of injury and degree of skeletal maturity constitute important predictors of the outcomes of pediatric thoracic and lumbar fractures; however, there remains a paucity of meaningful epidemiologic data with specific attention to the pediatric spine. The relationship between temperature and hip and wrist fracture incidence.

INTRODUCTION: Predicting when fracture incidence will rise assists in healthcare planning and delivery of preventative strategies. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between temperature and the incidence of hip and wrist fractures. METHODS: Data for adults presenting to our unit with a hip or wrist fracture over a seven and eight-year period respectively were analysed. Incidence rates were calculated and compared with meteorological records. A Poisson regression model was used to quantify the relationship between temperature and fracture rate. RESULTS: During the respe

Digital x-ray radiogrammetry identifies women at risk of osteoporotic fracture: results from a prospective study.

Using digital X-ray radiogrammetry (DXR) on hand radiographs from a large population-based study, 1,370 postmenopausal women were evaluated in a prospective fashion; fracture occurrence was compared with DXR measurements of historic radiographs. Further, the aim of the study was to evaluate factors affecting DXR bone mineral density (BMD) in this cohort. The study is based on data from a subgroup of women participating in the third Copenhagen City Heart Study and additional data from a questionnaire obtained in 1999. The mean follow-up time was 6.1 years. During the observation period, 245 wom

Differing perceptions of intervention thresholds for fracture risk: a survey of patients and doctors.

UNLABELLED: This survey suggests that patients are prepared to accept higher absolute fracture risk than doctors, before considering pharmacological therapy to be justified. Patients require that drug treatments confer substantial fracture risk reductions in order to consider long-term therapy. INTRODUCTION: Absolute fracture risk estimates are now incorporated into osteoporosis treatment guidelines. At present, little is known about how patients regard fracture risk and its management. We set out to describe and compare the views of patients and doctors on the level of fracture risk at which

P09 Uncommon cause of back pain

Abstract Case report - Introduction Back pain is one of the common musculoskeletal presentations to GPs and rheumatologists. While common causes are frequent, our patient required extensive investigation to reach a clinical diagnosis. This case draws attention to complexities involved and aims to refresh knowledge of less common causes. Case report - Case description A 40-year-old man presented to the GP with a few months history of gradual onset worsening low back and buttock pain, which was non-radiating resulting in reduced mobility. There was no preceding illness, systemic symptoms, gross

Integrated proteomic and metabolomic profiling characterizes tryptophan metabolic disturbance associated with mortality in ICU-admitted SFTS patients.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), caused by Dabie bandavirus, is associated with high mortality among intensive care unit (ICU) patients; however, the integrated proteomic-metabolomic mechanisms underlying fatal outcomes remain poorly characterized. This prospective cohort study enrolled 68 patients with SFTS, who were admitted to the ICU and classified them as survivors (n = 33) or non-survivors (n = 35) according to their 28-day clinical outcomes. Untargeted metabolomic profiling using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and quantitative pr

The fast-slow stretch-shortening cycle classification: provenance, transmission and evidential status of the 250 ms boundary.

Ground contact time is widely used to classify plyometric exercises as fast (< approximately 250 ms) or slow (> approximately 250 ms) stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) actions, shaping drill selection, progression and study design in training and rehabilitation. A categorical threshold is informative only if it marks a reproducible change in mechanism, in outcome, or in decision value, defined here as its capacity to change a prescription decision such as drill selection or progression. We examine the source of the 250 ms boundary, its original criteria, the evidence for a mechanistic breakpoint,

Factors influencing mechanical failure following intramedullary nailing of proximal femur fractures: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Proximal femur fractures are a common injury in elderly patients and are associated with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Recent data indicate that the age-standardized incidence of hip fractures in adults over 55 years has increased significantly. We aimed to identify radiographic stability parameters and patient- or procedure-related factors associated with clinical fixation success following intramedullary nailing of proximal femur fractures. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we evaluated 373 patients aged ≥35 years who underwent proximal femoral nail (PFN) implantat

A History of Preoperative Falls Is Associated With Increased Risk of Postoperative Medical and Surgical Complications Following Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Propensity-Matched Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Falls are common among older adults and reflect multisystem vulnerability that may predispose patients to adverse surgical outcomes. Although traditional preoperative risk factors for complications following total hip arthroplasty (THA) are well established, the independent prognostic value of a preoperative fall history remains poorly defined. This study aimed to evaluate whether a documented preoperative history of falls was associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications following primary THA in older adults. METHODS: Patients who were 65 years or older and und

Sex-Specific Associations Between Sagittal Spinal Alignment and Postural Control in Recreational Strength-Trained Young Adults: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

Background/Objectives: Strength training is a widely recommended form of physical activity due to its extensive health benefits and positive effects on musculoskeletal function, although improper technique and balance deficits may increase injury risk. While sex differences in spinal curvature and postural control have been identified in the general population, it remains unclear whether these differences persist among recreationally strength-trained individuals. This cross-sectional study investigated sex-specific differences in sagittal spinal alignment and static balance and examined potent

Z-Codes as a Social Determinant of Health Screening Tool for Perioperative Risk Stratification in Total Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) substantially influence surgical risk. However, International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision Z-code documentation as a perioperative screening tool for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) has not been examined using electronic health record-integrated data. This study aimed to analyze the association between documented SDOH-related Z-codes and postoperative complications following primary THA. METHODS: Using a national database, patients who underwent primary THA with minimum 2-year follow up were stratified by the pres

Unrestricted kinematic alignment for total knee arthroplasty : a mid- to long-term follow-up non-designer single surgeon study with survival analysis.

AIMS: Kinematic alignment (KA) offers a personalized approach by restoring each patient's pre-arthritic joint lines. Unrestricted KA (urKA) removes alignment boundaries defined by restricted KA concept, but concerns regarding reproducibility and clinical success persist. This study evaluates mid- to long-term survivorship and functional outcomes of urKA total knee arthroplasty (urKA-TKA) performed using a manual surgical technique by a single surgeon, with a minimum follow-up of three years. METHODS: We prospectively reviewed 229 consecutive urKA-TKAs performed between March 2014 and October

Influences of Tibial Plateau Morphology on JLCA Change, Clinical Outcomes and Cartilage Regeneration After Medial Opening Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) is widely used to treat medial compartment osteoarthritis with varus malalignment. Variations in proximal tibial intra-articular morphology may influence alignment correction during osteotomy, but their clinical significance remains unclear. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether different plateau morphologies are associated with differences in radiographic changes, clinical outcomes, and cartilage regeneration. It was hypothesized that proximal tibial plateau morphology does not significantly influ

Tuberosity-Sparing Anterior Opening-Wedge Tibial Osteotomy for Correcting Recurvatum: Effects on Functional Scores, Lower Limb Coronal Alignment, and Patellar Height.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic genu recurvatum (GR) continues to be a challenge for clinicians. Patients may present with pain, weakness, and instability, which can lead to significant functional impairment. Currently, there are few reports discussing the treatment options and clinical outcomes of patients with symptomatic GR. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The main objective of this study was to present the radiographic and functional outcomes of tuberosity-sparing anterior opening-wedge tibial osteotomy (TAOWTO) for symptomatic GR. It was hypothesized that TAOWTO can adequately correct the deformity and allo
