Induction of ovulation by prolonged pulsatile administration of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LRH) in patients with clomiphene resistant polycystic ovary-like disease.

Induction of ovulation with pulsatile administration of LRH by automatic portable infusion pump for 74 and 147 consecutive days in 2 patients with clomiphene resistant PCO-like disease is described. The patients exhibited 6 ovulatory cycles. One patient conceived during the fourth cycle. During the treatment a unilocular cyst, probably a lutein cyst, developed in one patient, but subsequently disappeared spontaneously under uninterrupted therapy. No chemical hyperstimulation was observed. Follicular phases lasted for 32 and 13 days in patient I and for 19, 25, 14 and 22 days in patient II. Lut

Gamma irradiation effects on human growth hormone producing pituitary adenoma tissue. An analysis of morphology and hormone secretion in an in vitro model system.

Irradiation-induced effects on pituitary cell morphology and secretion of growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) have been analysed using an in vitro system. Specimens for organ culture were obtained from three patients with pituitary tumours causing acromegaly but with different clinical activity of disease. Specimens were followed in vitro 1 h - 6 days after single-dose gamma irradiations (60Co) with 70, 100 and 150 Gy, respectively. These doses are used in clinical work for the stereotactic radiosurgery of pituitary adenomas. Considerable fluctuations in hormone secretion/release occurred

Role of sex steroid hormones in the normal and glucocorticosteroid hormone-induced evolution of carbamoylphosphate synthase (ammonia) and arginase activity in rat liver ontogenesis.

The effects of sex steroid hormones on the development changes of carbamoylphosphate synthase and arginase activity, and DNA content in rat liver were investigated. After birth, administration of estradiol causes an increase in carbamoylphosphate synthase and arginase activity at high dosages only. Progesterone strongly inhibits or even reverses these stimulatory effects of estradiol. Administration of progesterone alone had no effects in the 1st postnatal week, a stimulatory effect in the 2nd postnatal week, and slightly inhibitory effects on enzyme activities thereafter. Testosterone hardly …

Comparative rapidity of response of height, limb muscle and limb fat to treatment with human growth hormone in patients with and without growth hormone deficiency.

The widths of muscle and fat in the upper arm and calf have been measured radiologically before treatment and at intervals of 1, 3. 6 and 12 months during administration of human growth hormone in 41 pre-pubertal patients with "isolated" growth hormone deficiency and in 22 patients with multiple deficiencies following gross CNS lesions. Height was also measured. The curves of response of muscle and fat on the one hand and height on the other were strikingly dissimilar. A very rapid increase of muscle took place in the first month; but after 6 months the increments had fallen to normal values f

Sex Hormones Attenuate Pro-Inflammatory Gene Expression in Nucleus Pulposus and Annulus Fibrosus Cells in a Cell-Type Specific Manner.

BACKGROUND: Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is a major contributor to back pain and disability. The cause of IVD degeneration is multifactorial, with no disease-modifying treatments. Sex steroids, primarily testosterone and its derivatives, are becoming increasingly common in the clinic for the treatment of low back pain and continue to be used as ergogenic aids in sport. While outcomes at the level of pain and athletic performance are promising, little research has investigated the effects of these hormones on the biology of the IVD and how sex hormones may directly influence joint hea…

Distinct attention network topology and dynamics and their relations with pubertal hormones in preadolescent boys and girls with binge eating.

The increased prevalence of binge eating during puberty is predominantly in girls, coinciding with a surge in pubertal hormones. This suggests that hormone-activated alterations in widespread brain networks, such as attention network, can contribute to the pathophysiology of the disorder in girls, while distinct mechanisms may exist in boys. This study proposed to examine the topological properties and their temporal dynamics of the sustained attention network in preadolescent children with binge eating symptoms (BE) and matched controls and to test the relation of these properties to circulat…

Impaired sensitivity to thyroid hormones is associated with high lipoprotein(a) level in euthyroid patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between thyroid hormone sensitivity and lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is unclear. The purpose of this study is to illu … ed cubic spline analysis. CONCLUSION: In euthyroid T2DM patients, decreased sensitivity to thyroid hormones was found to be linked with high Lp(a) level. Screening for thyroid hormone insensitivity and serum Lp(a) levels should be emphasized in euthyroid T2DM patients for early intervention and improved outcomes.
