Benzoate Allergy in Children--From Foods to Personal Hygiene Products.

Benzoate allergy may be an overlooked allergen in children and one that may be of increasing importance with its increasing role as a preservative in pediatric personal hygiene formulations. The cases herein report an association with cola and benzoate allergy and discusses the implications of replacement of formaldehyde by benzoates in personal hygiene products.

Emerging concepts: mast cell involvement in allergic diseases.

In a process known as overt degranulation, mast cells can release all at once a diverse array of products that are preformed and present wit … iratory disease, allergic conjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis, and some of the more common medication hypersensitivity reactions. We discuss traditionally accepted roles that mast cells play in the pathogenesis of each of these conditions, but we also delve into new areas of discovery and research that challenge traditionally accepted paradigms.

Allergy to cassava: a new allergenic food with cross-reactivity to latex.

Patients who are allergic to latex (Hevea brasiliensis) may exhibit cross-hypersensitivity with foods. We present a case of anaphylaxis due to cassava in a patient suffering from pollinosis, latex allergy, and latex-fruit syndrome. We performed sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblotting with cassava, avocado, chestnut, banana, kiwi, and latex extracts in order to analyze the protein bands and their molecular weights, and identify immunoglobulin (Ig) E-binding bands. Immunoblot inhibition and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) inhibition were …

Risk assessment and food allergy: the probabilistic model applied to allergens.

In order to assess the risk of unintended exposure to food allergens, traditional deterministic risk assessment is usually applied, leading to inconsequential conclusions as 'an allergic reaction cannot be excluded'. TNO therefore developed a quantitative risk assessment model for allergens based on probabilistic techniques resulting in a more exhaustive risk assessment and more detailed information. By now, this approach is recognized as the future approach in allergen risk assessment. A case study (hazelnut proteins in chocolate spread) is presented as a proof of concept.

Tourette's syndrome in patients referred for allergy evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Tourette's syndrome is a relatively common disorder that may present as a spectrum that can include both motor and behavioral features. METHODS: We report four patients referred to allergists to rule out atopy as a reason fro their presumed respiratory symptoms who were subsequently found to have Tourette's syndrome. A review of the literature was also performed using Medline. RESULTS: The symptoms of Tourette's syndrome may overlap those associated with allergy involving the respiratory tract. There is little published information on the association of Tourette's syndrome with a

Ethanol-induced anaphylaxis following ingestion of overripe rock melon, Cucumis melo.

BACKGROUND: Anaphylactic reactions to ethanol are rare with only seven cases reported in the literature. All previous cases have occurred following ingestion of alcoholic beverages or food to which an alcoholic beverage has been added. To date there are no cases in the literature of ethanol-induced anaphylaxis caused by the accumulation of endogenous ethanol in overripe fruit. METHODS: We report a patient with ethanol-induced anaphylaxis who developed anaphylaxis following ingestion of overripe, but not fresh rock melon (Cucumis melo). The patient is a 24-year-old, previously well woman who e

Cow's milk protein intolerance in infants under 1 year of age: a prospective epidemiological study.

Incidence and clinical manifestation of cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI) were studied in 1158 unselected newborn infants followed prospectively from birth to 1 year of age. No food changes were required in 914 infants who were used as healthy controls. When CMPI was suspected (211 infants), diagnostic dietary interventions according to a standard protocol were performed. After exclusion of lactose intolerance, two positive cow's milk elimination/challenge tests were considered diagnostic of CMPI. Two hundred and eleven symptomatic infants were examined for possible CMPI. A large group of

Isolated late cutaneous skin test response to ampicillin: a distinct entity.

A case presentation describes a young woman with a history of two reactions to ampicillin therapy and a reproducible skin test reaction of i … sition. The skin test reaction began and ended earlier than would be expected for a classic delayed hypersensitivity reaction. It is considered to be an isolated late cutaneous response but cannot yet be designated a late cutaneous allergic response. Reactants characteristic of an Arthus reaction were not present, and no alternative immunologic basis was confirmed …

The relationship between reported atopy or allergy and immunoglobulins: a preliminary study.

The serum of 50 surgical patients with a history of asthma, hay fever or allergy has been analysed for IgE levels and compared with a control group without such a history. The values in the 'normal' group largely fell within the accepted range (below 200 iu./ml). Those in the 'hypersensitive' group had a wide range extending to over 1000 iu./ml but many of those with low values in this group had contact dermatitis and similar minor allergies. However, analysis of cases studied shows that any patient with a history of atopy or allergy is at risk from Cremophor-containing intravenous anaesthetic

[Etiopathogenesis of necrotizing arteritis (leukocytoclastic vasculitis)].

The small vessel's necrotizing angiitis (necrotizing microangiitis (NMA), leucocytoclastic angiitis) form a continuous spectrum from the exclusively cutaneous forms of Gougreot, to those which seriously affect the viscera, as the very acute and fatal cases of Zeek, passing through a series of intermediate phases, in which Schönlein-Henoch's purpura is found. In all of these clinical forms, the existence of an allergic mechanism has been suggested from their origin itself and in 1964 Alarcón-Segovia and Brown grouped them under the common denominator of allergic angiitis. Later investigations a

Pathology of allergic diseases.

An allergic disease may develop in any organ or system. The respective etiological factors include foreign proteins, infectious agents such as various microbes, viruses, moulds, parasites, chemical compounds often in the form of drugs usually designated as haptens, polysaccharides, benign and malignant neoplasms. Of the factors operating in the causal pathogenesis of such diseases the most important one is an exaggerated formation of antibodies, which appears to be uncontrolled and occurring irrespective of the demands of the organism. The essential morphological features in allergic inflammat

Incriminating the inotrope: Dobutamine, eosinophilia, and myocarditis.

This report of dobutamine-associated eosinophilia, fever, and eosinophilic myocardial hypersensitivity illustrates the substantial risk of severe sequelae stemming from diagnostic delay. Recognition of this rare condition should catalyze exploration for feasible dobutamine alternatives, thereby minimizing morbidity and optimizing outcomes.

Dupilumab facial redness: Clinical characteristics and proposed treatment in a cohort.

In this case series, we report for the first time in the literature in a cohort, the positive response to oral or topical antifungals for atopic dermatitis patients treated with Dupilumab that developed Dupilumab facial redness, supporting the Malassezia hypersensitivity theory.
