Geographical disparities and programmatic determinants of hydrocele surgery and lymphoedema management coverage for lymphatic filariasis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2018-2024: A national analysis of routine programme data.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a significant neglected tropical disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Although progress has been made toward interrupting transmission through mass drug administration, LF-related morbidities-particularly hydrocele, lymphoedema, and recurrent acute dermatolymphangioadenitis-continue to cause substantial disability, comorbid infections, and reduced quality of life. National evidence on the burden of LF morbidities and factors associated with access to morbidity management remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a national retrospective

Intimate partner sexual and physical violence among women in Togo, West Africa: prevalence, associated factors, and the specific role of HIV infection.

BACKGROUND: A substantial proportion of newly diagnosed HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa occur within serodiscordant cohabiting heterosexual couples. Intimate partner violence is a major concern for couple-oriented HIV preventive approaches. This study aimed at estimating the prevalence and associated factors of intimate partner physical and sexual violence among HIV-infected and -uninfected women in Togo. We also described the severity and consequences of this violence as well as care-seeking behaviors of women exposed to intimate partner violence. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was c

[Parents' coping with a diabetic child].

The purpose of this study is to describe and understand the process of parental coping with diabetic children in early childhood. The parental coping process was followed for a four-week period after the diagnosis of diabetes. The parents of two girls whose diabetes was diagnosed in early childhood served as study subjects. The data were collected by interviewing and observing the parents over four separate periods, first in hospital and later at home. The data were analyzed by the timeseries and content analysis methods. The main categories were formulated on the basis of coping theories. The

Translating a Nurse-Led Coping-Sleep-Adherence Bundle Into Routine Cardiovascular Care: A Theory-Informed Implementation Blueprint.

BACKGROUND: Adults with cardiovascular disease frequently experience anxiety, sleep disturbance, and challenges with long-term treatment adherence. These factors are associated with poorer quality of life, reduced engagement in guideline-directed therapy, and increased healthcare utilization. Although nurses are well-positioned to address these needs, nurse-led behavioral interventions often encounter barriers to sustained adoption in routine clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to describe a theory-informed implementation blueprint for integrating a nurse-led coping-sleep-ad

Fat Embolization Syndrome in Sickle Cell Disease: A Case Report.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a common hereditary hemoglobinopathy in Bahrain and is associated with a broad spectrum of acute and chronic multisystem complications. Fat embolization syndrome (FES) is a rare but life-threatening complication of SCD that results from the systemic release of fat globules, typically originating from ischemic bone marrow, leading to pulmonary, neurological, and multiorgan dysfunction. Early diagnosis is often challenging due to its non-specific clinical presentation and overlap with other sickle cell complications. We report the case of a 22-year-old male with SCD

Parent Narratives Provide Perspectives on the Experience of Care in Trisomy 18.

Trisomy 18 syndrome, also known as Edwards syndrome, is the second most common autosomal chromosome syndrome after Down syndrome. Trisomy 18 is a serious medical disorder due to the increased occurrence of structural defects, the high neonatal and infant mortality, and the disabilities observed in older children. Interventions, including cardiac surgery, remain controversial, and the traditional approach is to pursue pure comfort care. While the medical challenges have been well-characterized, there are scant data on the parental views and perspective of the lived experience of rearing a child

Integrating Geriatric Assessment Measures into National Cancer Institute Clinical Trials.

To improve the care of older adults with cancer, the traditional approach to clinical trial design needs to be reconsidered. Older adults are underrepresented in clinical trials with limited or no information on geriatric-specific factors, such as cognition or comorbidities. To address this knowledge gap and increase relevance of therapeutic clinical trial results to the real-life population, integration of aspects relevant to older adults is needed in oncology clinical trials. Geriatric assessment (GA) is a multidimensional tool comprising validated measures assessing specific health domains

Feasibility and preliminary effects of an integrated hospital-to-home transitional care intervention for older adults with stroke and multimorbidity: A study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a major life-altering event and the leading cause of death and disability in Canada. Most older adults who have suffered a stroke will return home and require ongoing rehabilitation in the community. Transitioning from hospital to home is reportedly very stressful and challenging, particularly if stroke survivors have multiple chronic conditions. New interventions are needed to improve the quality of transitions from hospital to home for this vulnerable population. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study is to examine the feasibility of implementing a new 6-month

The landscape of knowledge graph and large language model-augmented knowledge graph applications in dementia caregiving support: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dementia's rising prevalence places an immense burden on caregivers. Knowledge graphs (KGs) and large language model (LLM)-augmented KGs are emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches that organize complex dementia care knowledge and enable personalized, context-aware support, yet this field remains nascent. We aimed to map and synthesize research on KGs and LLM-augmented KGs in dementia caregiving, identifying system types, applications, outcomes, challenges, and ethical considerations. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI)

Quality of Life in Patients with Retinal Vein Occlusion: A Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second most common retinal vascular disorder after diabetic retinopathy and represents a significant cause of visual loss worldwide. Beyond visual impairment, RVO can profoundly affect patients' wellbeing and overall vision-related quality of life (QoL). Increasing evidence indicates that vision-related disability contributes to increased levels of anxiety and social limitations in affected individuals. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on QoL outcomes in patients with RVO, highlights factors influencing psychological outcomes, a

Discovering midwives' role and perceptions of hyperemesis gravidarum in antenatal care units in Sweden.

PROBLEM: Support for women with hyperemesis gravidarum is crucial yet insufficient, with research indicating harmful normalisation and dismissiveness towards affected women and their partners. BACKGROUND: Hyperemesis gravidarum is one of the leading causes of early pregnancy hospitalisation, affecting an estimated 0.3%-3.6% of pregnancies worldwide. The condition imposes substantial physical, psychological, and psychosocial burdens, yet it frequently remains underrecognised and inadequately managed. As a result, many women experience prolonged suffering and a considerably reduced quality of l

The STRENGTH Study: A cluster randomised controlled trial of the effect of a behaviour change intervention added to cardiac rehabilitation on physical activity adherence.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of global mortality, imposing significant health and economic burdens. Cardiac rehabilitation, including physical activity, can reduce coronary heart disease-related morbidity and mortality. We tested whether the addition of a behaviour change intervention to cardiac rehabilitation could promote and maintain physical activity achieved during cardiac rehabilitation, beyond standard care timeframes. METHODS: A cluster randomised controlled trial was conducted across six community-based maintenance stage cardiac rehabilitation classes. A to
