OBJECTIVE: The status of essential trace elements such as copper, iron, zinc, selenium and molybdenum was investigated in gestational diabetic pregnancies at term, and data were compared to control pregnancies. Fetal/maternal ratios of the elements and copper/zinc ratio were also computed in control and study populations.
METHODS: Samples from maternal venous, umbilical artery and umbilical vein were collected from gestational diabetic and control pregnant women, at the time of spontaneous delivery or Cesarean section, and concentrations of various trace elements were determined by atomic abs

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether known maternal risk factors for low birth weight directly contribute to infant mortality among very low birth weight infants.
DESIGN: Retrospective population-based, case-control study.
SETTING: Four hospitals in the Oakland, California, area: one community, two private, one health maintenance organization.
PARTICIPANTS: All live-born singleton very low birth weight ( < 1500 g) infants born to Oakland residents over a 3-year period. Cases were infants who died before their first birthday, identified by computerized linkage of birth and death certificates. For

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-related deaths in the United States are increasing. Medical, social, economic, and cultural issues have all been implicated in this trend, but few data exist to differentiate the relative contributions of these various factors.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to examine trends in US pregnancy-related mortality by place of death and maternal race and age. We hypothesized that such an analysis may allow some distinction between deaths related to medical performance and those more closely related to social, cultural, or environmental issues.
STUDY DESIGN: We cond

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are responsible for high maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide.
OBJECTIVE: Our primary objective was to report the epidemiological and clinical features of HDP in Cayenne General Hospital. Our secondary objectives were to search for factors associated to preeclampsia (PE) and to severe PE in patients with HDP.
METHODS: Our study was observational and non-interventional. It was conducted over 4-month period (January to April 2019) in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit of the Cayenne General Hospital. We included all pregnant women af

OBJECTIVES: To describe the magnitude and severity of abortion-related complications in health facilities and calculate the incidence of abortion-related near-miss complications at the population level in three provinces in Zambia, a country where abortion is legal but stigmatized.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 35 district, provincial and tertiary hospitals over 5 months. All women hospitalized for abortion-related complications were eligible for inclusion. Cases of abortion-related near-miss, moderate and low morbidity were identified using adapted World Health Organi

This review addresses the question of whether a short birth interval is associated with adverse nutritional outcomes for the mother or the child. Indices of anthropometric status (maternal weight or body mass index; child growth) and micronutrient status (e.g. iron or vitamin A) were included as outcomes. A computerized search of all relevant papers published since 1966 was completed, and the 'snowball' method was used to identify additional relevant published or unpublished papers. In total, 57 papers were found to contain data regarding the relationship between birth spacing and nutritional

One of the goals of the Millennium project of the United Nations is to reduce maternal and infant mortality. This includes adequate care for mothers and newborns during childbirth. Most maternal deaths occur during the post-partum period. Postpartum haemorrhage, eclampsia and sepsis are the main causes of maternal death. Preventive measures include active management of the third stage of labour, use of magnesium sulphate in pre-eclampsia, and implementing hygienic birth practices and the use of antibiotics, respectively. Major causes of neonatal mortality are pre- and dysmaturity, infections,

The use of seven obstetric procedures was studied in two institutions that use different approaches to maternity care. The study population included 796 women delivering at Booth Maternity Center and 804 women with similar sociodemographic characteristics delivering at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital during 1977 and 1978. Several differences were found between the two institutions. The majority of selected procedures were used more often at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital than at Booth Maternity Center. The greatest differences were found for women at low intrapartum risk, while diff

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a transitory form of diabetes occurring in pregnancy with maternal and neonatal health co … ervention to standard care or had no comparator. Studies that targeted women with GDM that reported maternal health and/or neonatal health outcomes (physical, mental, and social health outcomes) and were conducted in low- and middle-income countries were included in the review.
RESULTS: Twenty-nine studies (randomised controlled trials and non-randomised studies …

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health represents a significant public health concern given the high prevalence of mental disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period and their impact on maternal well-being, mother-infant bonding, and child development. Emerging evidence identifies self-criticism as a transdiagnostic vulnerability factor associated with psychological distress in this period, while self-compassion has been recognized as an important protective factor. In Brazil, access to preventive perinatal mental health interventions remains limited. This paper describes the protocol of

BACKGROUND: Obstructed labor (OL) and uterine rupture (UR) are common obstetric complications. This study explored the burden, risk factors, decomposition, and health inequalities associated with OL and UR to improve global maternal health.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional analysis study including data on OL and UR from the Global Burden of Diseases, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. The main outcome measures included the number and age-standardized rate (ASR) of incidence, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), prevalence, and deaths.
RESULTS: The global burden of OL and UR has decline…

BACKGROUND: Research to reduce maternal morbidity due to cardiovascular disease is vitally important in the United States, especially for the growing number of individuals with congenital heart disease (CHD) reaching childbearing age. Understanding patient experiences through patient engagement is critical to designing research that is aligned with the needs of adults with CHD undergoing pregnancy.
METHODS: This patient engagement project, grounded in human centered design, focuses on the discovering patient and healthcare provider priorities for reducing maternal morbidity in CHD through pat

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PTB) is the most stubborn cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality globally. Social determinants are one of the predictors of health disparities and conflicting when regarding the etiology of PTB. The current study objected to investigate the impact of the factors especially from socioeconomic aspects and provided a snapshot of the indicators of PTB in Kazakhstan.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A multi-center hospital-based cohort study was conducted on 3,000 singleton pregnant women in Kazakhstan to investigate whether socioeconomic status (SES) influences PTB in Kazakhsta

Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace element, but an excess or accumulation can be toxic. Until now, few studies have examined the effects of maternal Mn level on the risk of spontaneous preterm birth (SPB). The aims of this study were to examine the association between maternal Mn level and the risk of SPB at the early stage of pregnancy, and investigate whether this association was modified by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). We conducted a nested case-control study in three maternal and child health care hospitals in Shanxi pr

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation between the duration of the second stage of labour and subsequent early neonatal and maternal morbidity.
DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of a regional obstetric database.
SETTING: 17 maternity units in the North West Thames Health Region.
SUBJECTS: Selected from 36,727 consecutive singleton deliveries in 1988. The analysis was confined to the 25,069 women delivered of an infant of at least 37 weeks gestation with a cephalic presentation following the spontaneous onset of labour.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The relative risk of early maternal morbidity, post
