Enhancing explainable SARS-CoV-2 vaccine development leveraging bee colony optimised Bi-LSTM, Bi-GRU models and bioinformatic analysis.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a single-stranded RNA virus that caused the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The COVID-19 outbreak has led to millions of deaths and economic losses globally. Vaccination is the most practical solution, but finding epitopes (antigenic peptide regions) in the SARS-CoV-2 proteome is challenging, costly, and time-consuming. Here, we proposed a deep learning method based on standalone Recurrent Neural networks to predict epitopes from SARS-CoV-2 proteins easily. We optimised the standalone Bidirectional Long Sh

Interpretable prediction of drug-drug interactions via text embedding in biomedical literature.

Polypharmacy is a promising approach for treating diseases, especially those with complex symptoms. However, it can lead to unexpected drug-drug interactions (DDIs), potentially reducing efficacy and triggering adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Predicting the risk of DDIs is crucial for ensuring safe drug use, particularly by identifying the types of DDIs and the mechanisms involved. Therefore, this study used biomedical literature to proposed hierarchical attention-based deep learning models to predict DDIs and their types. The proposed model consists of two components: drug embedding and DDI pr

Accurate detection of gait events using neural networks and IMU data mimicking real-world smartphone usage.

Wearable technologies such as inertial measurement units (IMUs) can be used to evaluate human gait and improve mobility, but sensor fixation is still a limitation that needs to be addressed. Therefore, aim of this study was to create a machine learning algorithm to predict gait events using a single IMU mimicking the carrying of a smartphone. Fifty-two healthy adults (35 males/17 females) walked on a treadmill at various speeds while carrying a surrogate smartphone in the right hand, front right trouser pocket, and right jacket pocket. Ground-truth gait events (e.g. heel strikes and toe-offs)

Estimating global 0.1° scale gridded anthropogenic CO2 emissions using TROPOMI NO2 and a data-driven method.

Satellite remote sensing is a promising approach for monitoring global CO2 emissions. However, existing satellite-based CO2 observations are too coarse to meet the requirements of fine-scale global mapping. We propose a novel data-driven method to estimate global anthropogenic CO2 emissions at a 0.1° scale, which integrates emissions inventories and satellite data while bypassing the inadequate accuracy of CO2 observations. Due to the co-emitted anthropogenic emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) and CO2, high-resolution NO2 measurements from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TRO

Anaesthesia-induced Changes in Genomic Expression Leading to Neurodegeneration.

General anaesthetics (GA) have been in continuous clinical use for more than 170 years, with millions of young and elderly populations exposed to GA to relieve perioperative discomfort and carry out invasive examinations. Preclinical studies have shown that neonatal rodents with acute and chronic exposure to GA suffer from memory and learning deficits, likely due to an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, which has been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders. However, the mechanisms behind anaesthesia-induced alterations in late postnatal mice have yet to be establish

Perspective: Pathological transdifferentiation-a novel therapeutic target for cardiovascular diseases and chronic inflammation.

Pathological transdifferentiation, where differentiated cells aberrantly transform into other cell types that exacerbate disease rather than promote healing, represents a novel and significant concept. This perspective discusses its role and potential targeting in cardiovascular diseases and chronic inflammation. Current therapies mainly focus on mitigating early inflammatory response through proinflammatory cytokines and pathways targeting, including corticosteroids, TNF-α inhibitors, IL-1β monoclonal antibodies and blockers, IL-6 blockers, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), a

Social anxiety prediction based on ERP features: A deep learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Social Anxiety Disorder is traditionally diagnosed using subjective scales that may lack accuracy. Recently, EEG technology has gained importance for anxiety detection due to its ability to capture stable and objective neurophysiological activities. However, existing methods mainly focus on extracting EEG features during resting states, with limited use of psychologically features like Event-Related Potential (ERP) in task-related states for anxiety detection in deep learning frameworks. METHODS: We collected EEG data from 63 participants exposed to four facial expressions and ext

Early identification of patients at risk for iron-deficiency anemia using deep learning techniques.

OBJECTIVES: Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common health problem worldwide, and up to 10% of adult patients with incidental IDA may have gastrointestinal cancer. A diagnosis of IDA can be established through a combination of laboratory tests, but it is often underrecognized until a patient becomes symptomatic. Based on advances in machine learning, we hypothesized that we could reduce the time to diagnosis by developing an IDA prediction model. Our goal was to develop 3 neural networks by using retrospective longitudinal outpatient laboratory data to predict the risk of IDA 3 to 6 months be

CD4 nadir and neurocognitive trajectories in people living with HIV.

Human immunodeficiency virus-associated neurocognitive disorders persist in the combination antiretroviral therapy era. CD4 nadir is a well-established predictor of cognition cross-sectionally, but its impact on longitudinal neurocognitive (NC) trajectories is unclear. The few studies on this topic examined trajectories of global cognition, rather than specific NC domains. The current study examined CD4 nadir in relation to domain-specific NC decline. 132 HIV + adults from the Temple/Drexel Comprehensive NeuroHIV Center, Clinical and Translational Research Support Core Cohort were administered
