Engineering Mn-confined Fe0-carbon with isolated oxygen-containing groups breaks the bottleneck for concurrent self-driven Fenton degradation of antibiotics and heavy metals immobilization.

Fe0-C presents a promising remediator for co-contamination of antibiotics and heavy metals (HMs) in redox-oscillating soil/water, but bottlenecks of reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and Fe deactivation remain unresolved. This study innovatively engineered a multi-site Mn-zerovalent iron biochar (Mn-Fe0-BC) via stepwise carbon electron donation, integrating a Mn-O-confined Fe0 structure, abundant persistent free radicals (PFRs), and surface carboxyl groups to simultaneously establish a novel rate-limiting O2 reduction (ORR)-Fenton cascade and facilitate HMs fixation. Under dark air cond…

Legacy contamination by PAHs, pesticides, and metals in an urban mangrove estuary (Florida, USA), and the importance of sediment-core analyses to assessing future risks.

Clam Bayou is a mangrove-dominant urban estuary in Boca Ciega Bay (Florida, USA). Concerns about potential contaminants in the estuary prompted Florida Department of Environmental Protection to implement a study to document contemporary and historical potential contamination. This study examined polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, organic-pesticide, metal and metalloid analytes in 5 sediment cores and 42 surface-sediment samples from various locations in Clam Bayou. Twenty-six out of 81 analytes exceeded potential or probable sediment-quality toxicity guidelines for benthic aquatic organisms. Bec

In situ high-resolution insights into the dynamics of arsenic (As) species and heavy metals across the sediment-water interface in a deep karst reservoir.

Arsenic (As) and heavy metal contamination in aquatic systems pose critical environmental challenges, particularly in reservoirs. This study utilized dual-sided high-resolution diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) probes on-site to investigate the spatial distribution and mobility of As species and heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn) in the Hongfeng Reservoir, a deep karst reservoir in southwest China. Results revealed that As mobility was primarily governed by redox-sensitive processes, including the reduction of As(V) to As(III) and the reductive dissolution of Fe/Mn oxides. As(…

Stage- and sex-specific associations of prenatal individual and mixed metals exposure with adiposity peak and adiposity rebound among children: a prospective birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Adiposity peak (AP) and adiposity rebound (AR) are key indicators of early childhood growth, which are closely related to obesity, premature puberty, and metabolic abnormalities. Epidemiological studies have shown that prenatal metal exposure is linked to obesity in children. However, studies concerning the association of metals during pregnancy with AP and AR in children are scarce. METHODS: We measured the concentration of 17 serum metal elements including aluminum (Al), vanadium, manganese (Mn), iron, cobalt (Co), nickel, copper, zinc, selenium, cadmium, barium (Ba), thallium (…

Poacic Acid, a Plant-Derived Stilbenoid, Augments Cell Wall Chitin Production, but Its Antifungal Activity Is Hindered by This Polysaccharide and by Fungal Essential Metals.

Climate and environmental changes have modified the habitats of fungal pathogens, inflicting devastating effects on livestock and crop production. Additionally, drug-resistant fungi are increasing worldwide, driving the urgent need to identify new molecular scaffolds for the development of antifungal agents for humans, animals, and plants. Poacic acid (PA), a plant-derived stilbenoid, was recently discovered to be a novel molecular scaffold that inhibits the growth of several fungi. Its antifungal activity has been associated with perturbation of the production/assembly of the fungal cell wall

Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) feathers as bioindicators of exposure to metals and metalloids contamination in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas from Campeche state, Mexico.

Landfills are sources of soil, water, and air pollution due to the release of toxic compounds such as metals and metalloids. In both tropical and temperate environments, scavenger birds such as the Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) that have learned to use these sites as a feeding area are probably exposed to metals, metalloids and other "persistent bioaccumulative toxic substances (PBTs)" released in open dumpsite (OD) and sanitary landfill (SL). The objective of this study is to evaluate the presence and distribution of toxic metals (Al, Sn, Hg, Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr) and As in OD and SL from urban,…
