Content-based clustering of hallucinations across sensory modalities in a large online survey.

Hallucinations can have rather heterogeneous aetiology and presentation. This inspired the concept of different subtypes based on symptom profiles, especially in the field of auditory hallucinations. As many people experience hallucinations in more than one sensory modality, it seems important to investigate potential hallucination subtypes across different sensory modalities. We assessed the content of hallucinations as part of a large survey among the general Dutch population (n = 10,448) using the Questionnaire for Psychotic Experiences. Based on their descriptions, thematic categories were

Work-related support for employed and self-employed people with rheumatoid arthritis or axial spondyloarthritis: a cross-sectional online survey of patients.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the provision of work-related support for (self-)employed people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) by healthcare providers (HCPs) or employers. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the experiences of (self-)employed people with RA or axSpA regarding work-related support from HCPs and employers in the Netherlands. METHODS: This cross-sectional study concerned an online survey for (self-)employed people, aged ≥ 16 years and diagnosed with RA or axSpA. The survey focused on experiences with HCPs and employers' work-related suppo…

Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis: A comparison of osteological and CT methods of diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the differences between endoscopic and radiological methods of analysis for diagnosing chronic maxillary sinusitis (CMS) in archaeological skeletal remains. MATERIALS: 32 crania from a Dutch post-medieval rural population. METHODS: We assessed the presence of bone changes indicative of CMS (i.e., bone growth and bone resorption) both endoscopically and through computed tomography (CT), and then compared results. RESULTS: We observed moderate agreement between bone growth scores obtained through endoscopy and CT, and fair agreement when assessing bone resorption. CONCLU

Childhood trauma and its impact on depressive and anxiety symptomatology in adulthood: A 6-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma (CT) is a risk factor for depressive and anxiety disorders. However, whether CT is more strongly linked to specific clinical features of these disorders remains inconclusive. The current study comprehensively examined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between CT and depressive/anxiety symptomatology in a large adult sample with current and remitted depressive and/or anxiety disorders. METHODS: Baseline (n = 1803), 2-year (n = 1735), 4-year (n = 1585), and 6-year follow-up (n = 1475) data from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety were used. C…

The relationship between dry eye and sleep quality.

PURPOSE: Sleep is an important determinant of health and quality of life. This study aimed to clarify the association between dry eye and sleep quality using a large population-based cohort. METHODS: 71,761 participants (19-94 yrs, 59.4% female) from the Lifelines cohort in the Netherlands were assessed for dry eye using the Women's Health Study Dry Eye Questionnaire. Sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Logistic regression was used to examine the relationship between poor sleep quality (PSQI score >5) and dry eye, while correcting for age, sex, BMI, ed…

Transitional care of adolescents with Multiple Osteochondromas: a convergent mixed-method study 'Patients', parents' and healthcare providers' perspectives on the transfer process'.

OBJECTIVES: Multiple osteochondromas (MO) is a rare hereditary disease characterised by numerous benign bone tumours. Its chronic aspect requires a well-organised transition from paediatric care to adult care; however, little is known on organising this care specific for patients with MO. This study aims to gain insight on this topic. DESIGN: Convergent mixed-method study. SETTING: This study was conducted at the orthopaedic and paediatrics department of an MO-expertise centre in the Netherlands. PARTICIPANTS: 12 patients, 10 parents and 10 healthcare professionals were interviewed. An addi…

Limited progression of subclinical Dupuytren's disease.

AIMS: With novel promising therapies potentially limiting progression of Dupuytren's disease (DD), better patient stratification is needed. We aimed to quantify DD development and progression after seven years in a population-based cohort, and to identify factors predictive of disease development or progression. METHODS: All surviving participants from our previous prevalence study were invited to participate in the current prospective cohort study. Participants were examined for presence of DD and Iselin's classification was applied. They were asked to complete comprehensive questionnaires.

Psychosocial and peripartum determinants of postpartum depression: Findings from a prospective population-based cohort. The ABCD study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is prevalent and concerns a serious health problem for women and their families. The current large-scale birth cohort study investigated: (1) the associations of various potential determinants of postpartum depression using a multidimensional approach, and (2) the individual contribution of obstetric and perinatal determinants and pregnancy-specific anxiety to the risk of postpartum depression. METHODS: This study was based on a large-scale birth cohort study in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (ABCD-study). In 5109 women depressive symptoms were assessed using the…

Alcohol consumption in relation to carotid subclinical atherosclerosis and its progression: results from a European longitudinal multicentre study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The association between alcohol consumption and subclinical atherosclerosis is still unclear. Using data from a European multicentre study, we assess subclinical atherosclerosis and its 30-month progression by carotid intima-media thickness (C-IMT) measurements, and correlate this information with self-reported data on alcohol consumption. METHODS: Between 2002-2004, 1772 men and 1931 women aged 54-79 years with at least three risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) were recruited in Italy, France, Netherlands, Sweden, and Finland. Self-reported alcohol consumption, asse…

Exposure to Air Pollution during Pregnancy and Childhood, and White Matter Microstructure in Preadolescents.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has been related to brain structural alterations, but a relationship with white matter microstructure is unclear. OBJECTIVES: We assessed whether pregnancy and childhood exposures to air pollution are related to white matter microstructure in preadolescents. METHODS: We used data of 2,954 children from the Generation R Study, a population-based birth cohort from Rotterdam, Netherlands (2002-2006). Concentrations of 17 air pollutants including nitrogen oxides (NOX), particulate matter (PM), and components of PM were estimated at participants' homes during pregnancy a…

Unspecified Strokes: Time Trends, Determinants, and Long-Term Prognosis in the General Population.

INTRODUCTION: In the absence of neuroimaging, a stroke is typically labelled as unspecified. While the majority of clinic-based stroke research focuses on hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke, in the general population, a substantial proportion of strokes remains unspecified. OBJECTIVE: To investigate time trends in the occurrence and determinants of unspecified strokes and differences in patient characteristics and survival compared to ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. METHODS: We included 1,546 participants from the population-based Rotterdam Study who suffered a first-ever stroke during follow-up
