The incidence of dural tears after complete resection of lumbar synovial cysts and the relation to the outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Synovial cysts in the lumbar spine are uncommon causes of radicular pain. In cases where conservative treatment fails, surgical resection is recommended. Dural adhesions are common intraoperative findings; therefore, the removal of the cyst may sometimes result in dural tears. The frequency of dural tears is greater with synovial cysts than in other lumbar surgeries. Clinical parameters and characteristics seen on magnetic resonance imaging were assessed to investigate the correlation between the outcome after surgery of lumbar synovial cysts and dural tears. METHODS: This study wa

Psychophysical testing in rodent models of glaucomatous optic neuropathy.

Processing of visual information begins in the retina, with photoreceptors converting light stimuli into neural signals. Ultimately, signals are transmitted to the brain through signaling networks formed by interneurons, namely bipolar, horizontal and amacrine cells providing input to retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), which form the optic nerve with their axons. As part of the chronic nature of glaucomatous optic neuropathy, the increasing and irreversible damage and ultimately loss of neurons, RGCs in particular, occurs following progressive damage to the optic nerve head (ONH), eventually resul

Evaluation of a multiple regression model for the forecasting of the concentrations of NOx and PM10 in Athens and Helsinki.

Forecasting models based on stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR) have been developed for Athens and Helsinki. The predictor variables were the hourly concentrations of pollutants (NO, NO(2), NO(x), CO, O(3), PM(2.5) and PM(10)) and the meteorological variables (ambient temperature, wind speed/direction, and relative humidity) and in case of Helsinki also Monin-Obukhov length and mixing height of the present day. The variables to be forecasted are the maximum hourly concentrations of PM(10) and NO(x), and the daily average PM(10) concentrations of the next day. The meteorological pre-proce

A late neurological complication following posterior correction surgery of severe cervical kyphosis.

Though a possible cause of late neurological deficits after posterior cervical reconstruction surgery was reported to be an iatrogenic foraminal stenosis caused not by implant malposition but probably by posterior shift of the lateral mass induced by tightening screws and plates, its clinical features and pathomechanisms remain unclear. The aim of this retrospective clinical review was to investigate the clinical features of these neurological complications and to analyze the pathomechanisms by reviewing pre- and post-operative imaging studies. Among 227 patients who underwent cervical stabili

Combining multiple serum tumor markers improves detection of stage I epithelial ovarian cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Currently available tumor markers for ovarian cancer are still inadequate in both sensitivity and specificity to be used for population-based screening. Artificial neural network (ANN) as a modeling tool has demonstrated its ability to assimilate information from multiple sources and to detect subtle and complex patterns. In this paper, an ANN model was evaluated for its performance in detecting early stage epithelial ovarian cancer using multiple serum markers. METHODS: Serum specimens collected at four institutions in the US, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom were analyzed f

An experimental study on astrocytes promoting production of neural stem cells derived from mouse embryonic stem cells.

BACKGROUND: The production of neural stem cells (NSCs) derived from embryonic stem (ES) cells was usually very low according to previous studies, which was a major obstacle for meeting the needs of clinical application. This study aimed at investigating whether astrocytes could promote production of NSCs derived from ES cells in vitro. METHODS: Mouse ES cells line-D3 was used to differentiate into NSCs with astrocytes as inducing stromal cells by means of three-stage differentiation procedure. Another group without astrocytes served as control. The totipotency of ES cells was identified by ob

[The epidemiology of neural tube defects in high-prevalence and low-prevalence areas of China].

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of neural tube defects (NTDs) in high- and low-prevalence areas of China. METHODS: Birth defects surveillance data, collected from 1992 through 1994 was analyzed. These data were collected as part of the Sino-American cooperative project on NTDs prevention. We classified NTDs as anencephaly, encephalocele, high-level and low-level spina bifida (SB) according to location of the lesion (high vs low) and whether the defect was isolated or occurred in association with other birth defects. Rates were compared in the high-prevalence (North) region and the low

[Morphological changes induced by valproate and its administration concomitant with folinic acid or S-adenosylmethionine in pregnant rats].

Neural tube defects (NTD) are serious congenital abnormalities that have a multifactorial etiology, including both genetic and environmental effectors (for example, diet and/or drugs). Valproic acid (VPA) is a frequently used anti-epileptic drug that has a potentially teratogenic character, as well as the capacity for inducing NTD and other less serious malformations. However, the mechanism of action of VPA has not been clearly established, and it has been suggested that it interferes in the folate cycle and therefore, with the methionine/methylation, possibly through a metabolic blocking of s

A morphometric analysis of the craniofacial configuration in achondroplasia.

Human achondroplasia can be viewed as an experimental model for studying the effects of abnormal endochondral bone formation on the development of the skull as a whole. In this study, lateral cephalograms of 25 adult males and 26 adult females with achondroplasia were converted to a two-dimensional coordinate model of craniofacial morphology and analyzed using 66 linear, angular, and area variables. Lateral cephalograms of 951 normal adults were used for comparison. Two sample t-tests were used to compare achondroplastic cephalograms with normal cephalograms. Multivariate statistical analysis

The effects of exosomes originating from different cell sources on the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells into schwann cells.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) can differentiate into Schwann cells (SCs) during peripheral nerve injury; in our previous research, we showed that SC-derived exosomes (SC-exos) played a direct induction role while fibroblast-derived exosomes (Fb-exos) had no obvious induction role. The induction role of neural stem cell (NSC)-derived exosomes (NSC-exos) has also been widely confirmed. However, no studies have compared the induction effects of these three types of cells at the same time. Therefore, by investigating the effect of these three cell-derived exosomes upon the

From data to treatment plan: An AI-driven path for automated breast radiotherapy planning.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent malignancies in women, with radiotherapy (RT) playing a key role in its treatment. Advances in RT techniques, such as 3D conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), have improved dose precision and reduced side effects. However, RT modality selection and treatment planning remain manual, time-consuming, and subject to variability. PURPOSE: This study presents and validates TARS-B (Treatment Automation and Radiotherapy Selection for Breast Cancer), an automated framework that combines a deep learning-based

Non-measured and DVH-based patient-specific QA framework for lung SBRT VMAT with machine learning integration.

BACKGROUND: Conventional patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA) methods rely on time-consuming physical measurements. While previous studies have successfully employed machine learning (ML) models to predict gamma passing rates (GPRs), their clinical utility remains limited due to GPR's weak correlation with dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters. Thus, developing a novel PSQA framework that is non-measured and DVH-based (NMDB) presents a promising alternative. PURPOSE: To develop an NMDB PSQA framework incorporating ML to classify treatment plans susceptible to delivery errors. METHODS:

Liver injury due to endothelin receptor antagonists: a real-world study based on post-marketing drug monitoring data.

BACKGROUND: Liver injury is the hallmark adverse reaction of endothelin receptor antagonist (ERA). Since the first drug, bosentan has been widely used in clinical practice, hepatotoxicity has been accompanied by the history of ERA. The new ERA has been proven to have a lower liver risk but the current research findings are inconsistent. ERA-based targeted drug combinations are commonly used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, where the risk of liver injury is difficult to estimate. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the correlation between ERA and different ERA combinati

Microanatomical variations in the cerebellopontine angle associated with vestibular schwannomas (acoustic neuromas): a retrospective study of 1006 consecutive cases.

OBJECT: Great advances in neuroimaging, intraoperative cranial nerve monitoring, and microsurgical technique have shifted the focus of acoustic neuroma surgery from prolonging life to preserving cranial nerve function in patients. An appreciation of the vascular and cranial nerve microanatomy and the intimate relationship between neurovascular structures and the tumor is essential to achieve optimum results. In this paper the authors analyze the microanatomical variations in location of the facial and cochlear nerves in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) associated with acoustic neuromas and, ad
