Transient global amnesia and thalamic hemorrhage.

A left rostral thalamic hematoma was found in a 52-year-old hypertensive man who suffered from a 10-h episode of transient global amnesia (TGA). A neuropsychological study revealed no cognitive impairment in a follow-up period for 5 years. The left rostral part of the thalamus appears to be responsible for his TGA, due probably to an interference of the mamillothalamic tract, ventroamygdalofugal pathway or dorsal noradrenergic bundle.

The primate temporal pole: its putative role in object recognition and memory.

In this article, we consider both the ventral temporopolar cortex and the perirhinal cortex (areas 35 and 36) as the anterior ventromedial temporal (aVMT) cortex, and discuss its role based on recent data in monkeys and human subjects. In monkeys, the aVMT cortex receives its primary input from area TE, and only minor input from other cortical areas. Laminar patterns of connections suggest that the aVMT cortex is a hierarchically higher-order area than area TE. Lesions of this cortex produce deficits in the learning and performance of visual memory tasks. Neurons in the aVMT cortex respond sel

Developmental pattern of axonal pathways in the house shrew maxillary nerve.

The topographic patterns of peripheral receptors and effectors seem to contribute to the construction of the neuronal circuit in the central nervous system (CNS) in mammals. Many patterns replicating those of the periphery have been found in the CNS, and fasciculation has been regarded as having a central role in the pattern replication. The house shrew, Suncus murinus, is an excellent species in which to study this topic because it has a vibrissae system arranged in a single ordered fashion and extraordinarily well-developed trigeminal spinal tracts. Using immunostaining and retrograde-tracin

[A model for the study of the ototoxic effects of drugs in an experiment].

The authors compared sensitivity of the acoustic analyzer elements to ototoxic drugs in cat experiments. The model proposed assesses primary responses of the brain cortical acoustic zone (BCAZ) to sound stimulation. The drugs effect on the analyzer's periphery was determined from changes in bioelectric responses of the cochlea to sound stimulation (microphone potential, potential of the acoustic nerve action). The arguments are presented for feasibility of using primary BCAZ responses evoked by electric stimulation of thalamocortical radiation fibers coming from the medial geniculate body for

[An assessment of the thalamocortical sensory pathway based on small infarcts in the corona radiata on CT].

Although lacunar syndrome is relatively commonly encountered in patients with a lacunar infarct in the deep cerebral white matter, the responsible lesions are often unidentified. By examining eight patients with lacunar syndrome who had small infarcts in the deep cerebral white matter, an attempt was made to determine the position and distribution of the sensory pathway on brain CT at the level of the splenium of the corpus callosum. When the distance from the frontal crista to the superior saggital sinus sulcus was defined as 1.0, the position of the corticospinal tract was located in the por

Dual inhibitory pathways link antral somatostatin and histamine secretion in human, dog, and rat stomach.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The secretion and function of antral histamine are not known. The aims of this study were to characterize the mechanisms of histamine release from the gastric antrum of humans, dogs, and rats and to determine whether histamine can influence the secretion of somatostatin and gastrin. METHODS: Somatostatin, gastrin, and histamine secretion from superfused antral segments was measured using radioimmunoassay. RESULTS: Superfusion with thioperamide (H3 antagonist) increased somatostatin and decreased gastrin and histamine secretion in all three species; superfusion with (r)-alp

L-dihydroxyphenylalanine and complex I deficiency in Parkinson's disease brain.

There is evidence for a 37% deficiency of complex I activity in Parkinson's disease (PD), which appears to be specific for PD amongst parkinsonian syndromes and selective for the substantia nigra within the central nervous system. Rat studies have shown that, in the context of a normal nigrostriatal dopaminergic cell population, L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-dopa) causes a reversible 25% defect of complex I activity in nigral and striatal tissue. Analysis of striatal tissue from PD patients after prolonged exposure to high-dose L-dopa does not show such a defect. Results of these and other studi

Disorders of the central and autonomic nervous systems as a cause for emesis in infants.

Vomiting in infants can be caused by a wide variety of neurological disorders. All involve stimulation of a central pattern generator for vomiting located in the brainstem, the nucleus tractus solitarius. This, in turn, projects to multiple motor nuclei involved in the vomiting reflex. The chemoreceptor trigger zone (the area postrema) in the floor of the fourth ventricle is a major afferent to the nucleus tractus solitarius that can be stimulated by pressure from hydrocephalus, closed head injuries, or tumors. Other neurological causes of vomiting discussed include migraine, epilepsy, and dys

Evaluation of pain perception after anterior capsulotomy: a case report.

The medial prefrontal cortex has been implicated in pain perception by recent anatomical, physiological, and functional imaging data demonstrating that frontal and anterior cingulate cortices receive inputs related to nociception; neurosurgical case reports suggest that lesions involving these areas may specifically reduce the affective or emotional component of chronic intractable pain. We examined this hypothesis more closely by assessing psychophysical ratings of (1) warmth, pain intensity, and unpleasantness evoked by phasic thermal stimuli, (2) tolerance to tonic cold stimuli, and (3) per

Callosal transfer in schizophrenia: too much or too little?

Evidence from diverse sources has pointed to an abnormality in callosal transfer in schizophrenia. To examine this further, a test was devised that measures Stroop interference and facilitation within and between the cerebral hemispheres. 46 heterogeneous schizophrenic patients were tested, and it was found that lateralized Stroop effects were equivalent in the left and right hemispheres and did not differ from normal or psychiatric (affective disorder) control Ss. In control Ss, Stroop effects that required interhemispheric transfer of coded information were reduced relative to those requirin

Claustrum in the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) brain: cytoarchitecture and connections with cortical and subcortical structures.

The cytoarchitecture of the claustrum in the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) brain, the morphology of its neurons, and the efferent connections with cortical and subcortical structures were studied with the Nissl and Klüver-Barrera, the Golgi, and the horseradish peroxidase methods. It was found that the claustrum is a well developed nucleus in the hedgehog telencephalon and, as in other mammals, is divided into dorsal and ventral parts. In Golgi-stained sections, spiny multipolar cells are the predominant neurons of both the dorsal and the ventral claustrum and are projection neurons. Aspiny m

Postacquisition injection of tetrodotoxin into the parabrachial nuclei elicits partial disruption of passive avoidance reaction in rats.

The recent discovery that post-trial functional blockade of the parabrachial nuclei by intracerebral injection of 10 ng tetrodotoxin (TTX) disrupts acquisition of conditioned taste aversion (CTA) (Ivanova & Bures, 1990a,b) has prompted attempts to ascertain the role of this structure in other types of inhibitory learning. In Experiment 1, rats with implanted parabrachial cannulae were trained in a step-through avoidance task and received bilateral TTX (2 x 10 ng) immediately after the acquisition trial; they displayed significantly weakened avoidance of the shock compartment 2 days later. In E

Erythromycin acts through a cholinergic pathway to improve canine-delayed gastric emptying following vagotomy and Roux-Y antrectomy.

We have demonstrated that erythromycin improves gastric emptying in dogs following truncal vagotomy and Roux-en-Y antrectomy (VRYA). To explore its mechanism of action we studied gastric emptying and myoelectric activity in a canine Roux model and administered atropine simultaneously with erythromycin. Tachyphylaxis was evaluated following short-term administration. Four dogs with delayed gastric emptying following VRYA were studied. Radionuclide solid gastric emptying was measured, with simultaneous myoelectric recordings obtained from the duodenum and Roux limb. Study groups were: (1) saline

Cortical reflex myoclonus. A study of the relationship between giant somatosensory evoked potentials and motor excitability.

The excitability cycles of the N1-P1-N2 waveforms of the scalp-recorded somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) and of the long-latency, cortical loop reflex electromyographic (EMG) activity were studied in two patients with cortical reflex myoclonus. Long-latency cortical loop reflex EMG activity in the thenar muscles and giant SEPs occurred following median nerve stimulation. The excitability cycle of the EMG paralleled that of the SEP. There was an initial period of attenuation of SEP and EMG amplitude at interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of less than 40 ms followed by a period of amplitude enhan

Stimulation of carotid body chemoreceptors does not influence the discharge of A1 neurons projecting to the forebrain.

Stimulation of carotid body chemoreceptors activates putative vasopressin neurons in the supraoptic nucleus, an effect which has been abolished by lesions in the caudal ventrolateral medulla. Stimulation within the A1 catecholamine cell group in the ventrolateral medulla also activates supraoptic neurons and releases vasopressin. Therefore the A1 catecholamine neurons may be the means by which carotid body chemoreceptors influence the supraoptic nucleus and other parts of the forebrain. To test this possibility the influence of carotid body chemoreceptors on the discharge of rostrally-projecti

Retrograde neuronal labelling and double-staining immunohistochemistry of tachykinin- and calcitonin gene-related peptide-immunoreactive pathways in the carotid sinus nerve of the guinea pig.

The origin of tachykinin- and calcitonin gene-related peptide-like immunoreactive (CGRP-LI) nerve fibres in the guinea pig carotid body and carotid sinus was determined by retrograde labelling of the carotid sinus nerve with Fluoro-gold and immunohistochemical double staining with fluorescein- and rhodamine-conjugated second antisera. Fluoro-gold-labelled perikarya with characteristic features of primary sensory neurones were numerous in the glossopharyngeal (petrosal) ganglion and occurred rarely in the closely attached superior vagal (jugular) ganglion. Role of dentate gyrus cells in retention of a radial arm maze task and sensitivity of rats to cholinergic drugs.

Male adult Fischer-344 rats that received bilateral injections of colchicine into two rostrocaudal sites showed relatively long-lasting alterations in the performance of a previously acquired radial arm maze task and specific destruction of dentate granule cells. Results of subsequent experiments with cholinergic drugs indicated that physostigmine or nicotine had no effect on the number of errors made in the maze, although other signs of cholinergic or pharmacological activity were present. RS-86, an analog of the muscarinic agonist arecoline, decreased errors in colchicine-treated rats, but t

Neostriatal projections from cytoarchitectonically defined gyri in the prefrontal cortex of the dog.

The cytoarchitecture and neostriatal projections of the canine prefrontal cortex (PFC) were examined by using Nissl, silver degeneration, autoradiographic, and horseradish peroxidase techniques. Cytoarchitectonically, the PFC can be divided into six major gyral areas with each area corresponding to one of the major gyri--proreal, polar, pregenual, subproreal, paraorbital, and orbital--defined myeloarchitectonically by Kreiner (J. Comp. Neurol. 116:117-133, '61). Of the six major areas, only the proreal gyrus displays a distinctly granular layer IV. In all other gyri, layer IV is more difficult

Observations on the brainstem-spinal descending systems of normal and reeler mutant mice by the retrograde HRP method.

Brainstem neurons which project to the lumbar spinal level were identified in both reeler mutant mice and normal controls (Balb/c mice) by the retrograde horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique. In normal controls after HRP injection into the lumbar cord, retrogradely labelled neurons were observed in (1) the lateral vestibular nucleus, (2) the pontine and medullary reticular formations including the nucleus centralis caudalis pontis, nucleus gigantocellularis, nucleus paragigantocellularis, nucleus raphe magnus et pallidus, and nucleus centralis medullae oblongatae pars ventralis et dorsalis,
