Headache is one of the most frequent physical complaints in children. Although headaches in children are generally benign, neuroimaging studies are frequently performed in clinical practice for the fear of missing a serious underlying disease. Despite this, limited data exist about the utility of neuroimaging in recurrent headache of children with a normal neurologic examination. This prospective study was planned to determine the value of neuroimaging in neurologically normal children with migraine and tension-type headache. Among 95 consecutive patients presenting with headache, 72 patients

Radiation therapy is widely used in the treatment of head and neck tumours either as a primary form of treatment or a supplementary modality. Although the benefits of radiation therapy are well established, this treatment modality is not without untoward consequences and complications. The intent of this paper is to highlight the neurological complications that may follow the treatment for head and neck malignancies, in particular, following radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell malignancy characterized by infiltration of bone marrow, bone destruction, infiltration of soft tissues with plasma cells, and suppression of normal hematopoiesis. The production of monoclonal immunoglobulins with or without light chains is a major feature of the disease. Full spectrum of plasma cell dyscrasias include monoclonal gammapathy of undetermined significance, smouldering myeloma, indolent multiple myeloma, and fully developed, symptomatic multiple myeloma. The usual presenting features of MM include bone pain, weakness, fatigue, fever and infec

Tick carried illnesses frequently lead towards neurological complications. The tick-borne encephalitis and borreliosis are the most frequently encountered illnesses having such aetiopathogenesis. In the study there are presented clinical aspects of tick-borne encephalitis and borreliosis with special consideration of various neurological symptomatology. Simultaneously there are discussed current diagnostic rules of the diseases, mainly on the basis of serologic investigation.

A 24 year old patient with acute double vision and headache was admitted to our clinic. A diagnosis of orbital myositis was confirmed after magnetic resonance imaging and orbital echogram. No other clinical manifestations were observed on general examination. Since orbital myositis cases with only neurological symptoms and without typical visual impairment are not frequent, we decided to present this case.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the neurologic outcomes of neonates and infants suffering from persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia of infancy (PHHI).
METHODS: The neurologic development of 90 PHHI patients was studied retrospectively. Sixty-three patients were treated surgically and 27 were treated medically. Fifty-four patients were neonates, of whom 8 were treated medically and 46 were operated on (19 for a focal adenomatous hyperplasia and 27 for diffuse hyperinsulinism). Thirty-six patients had infancy-onset hyperinsulinism, of whom 19 were treated medically and 17 underwent pancreatectomy (1

Although paradoxical embolism through a patent foramen ovale (PFO) has become an established cause of cerebral ischemia in younger patients without other obvious causes of stroke, the therapeutic options have not been investigated satisfactorily. There are still uncertainties about the natural history of PFO patients after suffering a stroke, and diagnostic criteria proving a causal and not incidental relation to the embolic event are not established. The stroke recurrence has been evaluated in several studies in a heterogeneous population and seems as low as 1.9% per year. Secondary prophylac

INTRODUCTION: An uncommon complication of fractures of the skull in infancy is a leptomeningeal cyst, which is also known as a growing skull fracture. A post traumatic leptomeningeal cyst may occur in adults, but is much rarer and may be attributed to a fracture of the skull which occurred in childhood. This complication is caused by a tear in the dura mater, through which pulsation of the cerebro spinal fluid forces the arachnoid layer to herniate. The commonest clinical finding is a soft tissue swelling or tumour appearing on the head.
CLINICAL CASE: We report the case of a 47 year old man,

Congenital hypothyroidism and the thyroid hormone (T(3)) resistance syndrome are associated with severe central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction. Because thyroid hormones are thought to act principally by binding to their nuclear receptors (TRs), it is unexplained why TR knock-out animals are reported to have normal CNS structure and function. To investigate this discrepancy further, a T(3) binding mutation was introduced into the mouse TR-beta locus by homologous recombination. Because of this T(3) binding defect, the mutant TR constitutively interacts with corepressor proteins and mimics the

Patients surviving high-voltage electrical injury may have early and delayed sequelae. The most apparent neurological complications are known to be cerebral injury, spinal cord lesions, peripheral-nerve injuries and motor neuropathies. In this study, clonus, which is an unusual late neurological sequela in an electrical burn patient and presented as series of rhythmic, monophasic contractions and relaxations of a group of muscles, is presented. Possible mechanisms of this unusual late sequela and the clinical outcome of the patient are discussed. Ankle and patellar clonus was observed in 4 pat

BACKGROUND: People with neurological disease have a much higher risk of both faecal incontinence and constipation than the general population. There is often a fine dividing line between the two conditions, with any management intended to ameliorate, one risking precipitating the other. Bowel problems are observed to be the cause of much anxiety and may reduce quality of life in these people. Current bowel management is largely empirical with a limited research base.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of management strategies for faecal incontinence and constipation in people with neurologi

In the present study we have explored antigliadin (AGA) and antireticulin (ARA) antibody tests for the serological screening for coeliac disease (CD) of 206 children with neurological disorders. IgA- or/and IgG-type AGA was discovered in 17 (8.3%) patients and IgA-type ARA in one (0.5%) patient. A small intestinal biopsy was performed in all 18 antibody-positive patients, and villous atrophy compatible with CD was revealed in three cases (patients with either epilepsy, retardation of psychomotor development or Down's syndrome). The CD prevalence rate of 14.6 per 1000 (95% CI 7.0-22.2) found in

The purpose of this study is to assess the possibility of predicting mortality, major pathology and long-term neurodevelopmental impairment in very low birth weight VLBW infant using Clinical Risk Index for Babies (CRIB). We studied a cohort of 251 VLBW infants, whose CRIB could be calculated, born from 1995 to 1998 in our Unit. We analyzed the mortality before discharge, the incidence of chronic lung disease (CLD) and of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), the length of stay before discharge and the neurodevelopmental impairment at one and two years of corrected age using the Griffiths developm

We report a patient with a unique combination of clinical findings: XY sex reversal, spastic paraplegia, mental retardation, dysmorphism, and infantile-onset olivopontocerebellar hypoplasia. The phenotype of our patient did not coincide with any of the described forms of XY reversal syndromes, hereditary or sporadic spastic paraplegias, or congenital or infantile-onset cerebellar or olivopontocerebellar atrophies or hypoplasias. The disorder of this patient likely represents a genetic condition with pleiotropic effects on brain development and sex determination and adds further evidence for th

OBJECTIVE: In this paper we study the epidemiological criteria and those of etiological investigation which should be considered when analysing and investigating problems with health due to exposure to occupational hazards, with special attention to neurological damage due to chemical or physical contamination or to the ergonometric requirements of the task.
DEVELOPMENT: We define the part played by occupational hazards in causing disease both professional and related to other occupations. The different preventive models used in the history of prevention of professional hazards are analysed.

Captive great egret (Ardea albus) nestlings were maintained as controls or were dosed with methylmercury chloride at low (0.5), and high doses (5 mg/kg, wet weight) in fish. Low dosed birds were given methylmercury at concentrations comparable to current exposure of wild birds in the Everglades (Florida, USA). When compared with controls, low dosed birds had lower packed cell volumes, dingy feathers, increased lymphocytic cuffing in a skin test, increased bone marrow cellularity, decreased bursal wall thickness, decreased thymic lobule size, fewer lymphoid aggregates in lung, increased perivas
