The neuro-immune axis in cancer: from mechanisms to therapeutic opportunities.

In recent years, neural mechanisms involved in tumor initiation, progression, and immune regulation have garnered growing attention, fueling the rapid advancement of the burgeoning interdisciplinary domain of neuro-oncology. As a central component of physiological homeostasis, the neurophysiological system also exerts significant influence on the development and dynamics of the tumor microenvironment via complex neuro-immune signaling. Studies have shown that neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, and their mediated signaling pathways can directly or indirectly affect the functional state of tumor-

The Effects of Deep TMS on QEEG Measures in Co-Occurring Major Depressive Disorder and Early-Stage Alzheimer's Disease: A Pilot Study.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) represent two of the most prevalent diseases worldwide. Notably, it is estimated that 30%-50% of individuals with AD have co-occurring MDD and there are overlapping symptoms across numerous domains. In this pilot study, a Deep TMS protocol (targeting the left frontal and bilateral temporal regions) was delivered for 36 sessions to patients with co-occurring MDD and early-stage AD (N = 12). All participants received the treatment and there was no control condition. The treatment yielded a response rate of 83.33% (defined by a ≥50% red

Atypical cortical feedback underlies failure to process contextual information in the superior colliculus of Scn2a+/- autism model mice.

Atypical sensory integration and contextual learning are common symptoms in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but how sensory circuits are affected remains elusive. Here we focused on the early visual information processing, and performed in vivo two-photon calcium imaging and pupillometry of mice engaged in an implicit learning task in stable and volatile visual contexts. Wild-type (WT) mice show stimulus-specific contextual modulation of the visual responses in the superior colliculus (SC) and pupil dynamics, whereas SCN2A-haploinsufficient ASD-model mice exhibit abnormal modulation patterns.

Psychedelic iatrogenic structural dissociation: an exploratory hypothesis on dissociative risks in psychedelic use.

This paper introduces the hypothesis of Psychedelic Iatrogenic Structural Dissociation (PISD), proposing that psychedelics may reactivate dissociated traumatic material, increasing the risk of psychological destabilization in trauma-exposed individuals. Grounded in structural dissociation theory, this framework suggests that psychedelics can disrupt the balance between daily functioning (the Apparently Normal Personality, ANP) and trauma-related responses (the Emotional Personality, EP), leading to the resurfacing of unintegrated memories. A review of recent studies highlights persistent adver

Effect of gestational diabetes on neurodevelopment outcome of the offsprings- Ma'an shan birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects children's neurodevelopmental processes. However, continuous monitoring of this effect across different child age span is lacking. STUDY DESIGN: 1438 mother-infant pairs were finally include in the analysis. Data of a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) administered to women at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy was collected. Neurodevelopment in childhood was assessed using the Ages and Stages Questionnaires. RESULTS: At the age of 6 months, GDM offspring had higher risk of delays in the fine motor domain [aOR = 1.77 (95%CI:1.08 ~ 2.88)]. At

Neurological consequences of adult-onset hypothyroidism.

Adult-onset hypothyroidism has long been recognized as a reversible cause of cognitive impairment. However, recent studies have shown that it is associated with structural brain alterations besides functional alterations, particularly in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Neurophysiological and molecular studies have demonstrated that hypothyroidism impairs synaptic plasticity, disrupts neurotransmitter signaling, and promotes neuroinflammation, leading to learning and memory impairments. The condition also affects adult neurogenesis, particularly in the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Moreover

Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis as a Therapeutic Target in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

This review is focused on adult hippocampal neurogenesis as a potential therapeutic target in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Adult hippocampal neurogenesis refers to the production of new hippocampal dentate granule cells (DGCs) from a replenishable pool of neural stem and progenitor cells throughout life. Adult-generated DGCs have been shown to exert a profound influence on hippocampal network activity in experimental animals and have been implicated in the regulation of many hippocampal-dependent behaviors and emotional states, including certain forms of learning and memory, anxiety

Poly-symptomatology of chronic multi-canalicular benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: a deductive, inductive, and abductive narrative review.

This narrative review aims to present an overview of the symptomatology of chronic multi-canalicular benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (mc-BPPV) from deductive (what is believed to be known), inductive (what is likely), and abductive (hypothetical) perspectives. The purpose is to recognize these symptoms as expressions of an eventual mc-BPPV when they occur in patients with vestibular migraine, whiplash associated disorders (WAD) and other chronic pain disorders. These symptoms are often considered to be biopsychosocial conditions due to a lack of objective findings, that is, the absence of

Alternating hemiplegia of childhood associated mutations in Atp1a3 reveal diverse neurological alterations in mice.

Pathogenic variants in the neuronal Na+/K+ ATPase transmembrane ion transporter (ATP1A3) cause a spectrum of neurological disorders including alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC). The most common de novo pathogenic variants in AHC are p.D801N (∼40 % of patients) and p.E815K (∼25 % of patients), which lead to early mortality by spontaneous death in mice. Nevertheless, knowledge of the development of clinically relevant neurological phenotypes without the obstacle of premature death, is critical for the identification of pathophysiological mechanisms and ultimately, for the testing of thera

Evidence of neuronal DNA damage in the brains of patients with Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome is characterized by the postnatal loss of neurophysiological function and regression of childhood development. Because the syndrome is X linked, and males with MECP2 mutations generally do not survive birth, the study of this syndrome has been complicated by the fact that, in the female brain, a portion of neurons express wild-type MECP2, and another portion of neurons express a non-functional allele of MECP2. Here, we present an approach that enables transcriptional profiling of individual neurons and direct comparison of neurons that express functional MECP2 with those that hav

Dissociative Symptoms and Interoceptive Integration.

Dissociative symptoms and disorders of dissociation are characterised by disturbances in the experience of the self and the surrounding world, manifesting as a breakdown in the normal integration of consciousness, memory, identity, emotion, and perception. This paper aims to provide insights into dissociative symptoms from the perspective of interoception, the sense of the body's internal physiological state, adopting a transdiagnostic framework.Dissociative symptoms are associated with a blunting of autonomic reactivity and a reduction in interoceptive precision. In addition to the central fu

Neuroanatomical and Functional Correlates in Depressive Spectrum: A Narrative Review.

Depressive spectrum disorders are considered among the most common in the general population. Major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder (or dysthymia) are the most recognized, but other depressive disorders exist with varying or no specificity. The main difference between major depressive disorder and dysthymia lies in the duration and intensity of symptoms. Improving our understanding of its etiology and pathogenesis must be a priority for health and safety. Given the complexity of the evidence in the literature, it was deemed useful to provide a comprehensive summary of th

A cause not to be underestimated in the development of winged scapula: sports-related injuries.

Winged scapula (WS) is characterized by the medial and/or inferior border of the scapula protruding from the thoracic wall. The aetiologies include sports activities, trauma, surgical complications, infections and muscular dystrophies. In our study, we aim to describe the electrophysiological and clinical features of patients referred to our clinic with a preliminary diagnosis of winged scapula and to identify the causes of WS. Between 2009 and 2021, a retrospective analysis was performed of the neurophysiological studies and clinical data of patients who presented with a preliminary diagnosis

Automatic Feature Selection for Sensorimotor Rhythms Brain-Computer Interface Fusing Expert and Data-Driven Knowledge.

Early brain-computer interface (BCI) systems were mainly based on prior neurophysiological knowledge coupled with feedback training, while state-of-the-art interfaces rely on data-driven, machine learning (ML)-oriented methods. Despite the advances in BCI that ML can be credited with, the performance of BCI solutions is still not up to the mark, posing a major barrier to the widespread use of this technology. This paper proposes a novel, automatic feature selection method for BCI able to leverage both data-dependent and expert knowledge to suppress noisy features and highlight the most relevan

Sex dependence of opioid-mediated responses to subanesthetic ketamine in rats.

Subanesthetic ketamine is increasingly used for the treatment of varied psychiatric conditions, both on- and off-label. While it is commonly classified as an N-methyl D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist, our picture of ketamine's mechanistic underpinnings is incomplete. Recent clinical evidence has indicated, controversially, that a component of the efficacy of subanesthetic ketamine may be opioid dependent. Using pharmacological functional ultrasound imaging in rats, we found that blocking opioid receptors suppressed neurophysiologic changes evoked by ketamine, but not by a more selective

Electroceuticals and Magnetoceuticals in Gastroenterology.

In the realm of gastroenterology, the inadequacy of current medical treatments for gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), coupled with their potential side effects, necessitates novel therapeutic approaches. Neuromodulation, targeting the nervous system's control of GI functions, emerges as a promising alternative. This review explores the promising effects of vagal nerve stimulation (VNS), magnetic neuromodulation, and acupuncture in managing these challenging conditions. VNS offers targeted modulation of GI motility and inflammation, presenting a poten
