Aggravated hepatic fibrosis induced by phenylalanine and tyrosine was ameliorated by chitooligosaccharides supplementation.

Hepatic fibrosis is a classic pathological manifestation of metabolic chronic hepatopathy. The pathological process might either gradually deteriorate into cirrhosis and ultimately liver cancer with inappropriate nutrition supply, or be slowed down by several multifunctional nutrients, alternatively. Herein, we found diet with excessive phenylalanine (Phe) and tyrosine (Tyr) exacerbated hepatic fibrosis symptoms of liver dysfunction and gut microflora dysbiosis in mice. Chitooligosaccharides (COS) could ameliorate hepatic fibrosis with the regulation of amino acid metabolism by downregulating …

Hyponatremia and malnutrition: a comprehensive review.

BACKGROUND: Hyponatremia (serum sodium lower than 135 mmol/L) is the most frequent electrolyte alteration diagnosed in medical practice. It has deleterious clinical effects, being an independent predictor of mortality. Malnutrition encompasses pathological states caused by both nutrients excess and deficiency, being frequently documented in chronic kidney disease patients. In addition, chronic hyponatremia promotes adiposity loss and sarcopenia, while malnutrition can induce hyponatremia. This pathological interaction is mediated by four main mechanisms: altered electrolyte body composition (l…

Manipulating Microbiota in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Treatment: Clinical and Natural Product Interventions Explored.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a complex multifactorial chronic inflammatory disease, that includes Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), having progressively increasing global incidence. Disturbed intestinal flora has been highlighted as an important feature of IBD and offers promising strategies for IBD remedies. A brief overview of the variations occurring in intestinal flora during IBD is presented, and the role of the gut microbiota in intestinal barrier maintenance, immune and metabolic regulation, and the absorption and supply of nutrients is reviewed. More importantly,…

The Diet as a Modulator of Tumor Microenvironment in Colorectal Cancer Patients.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in Western countries and remains the second most common cause of cancer death worldwide. Many studies show the importance of diet and lifestyle in the incidence of CRC, as well as in CRC prevention. However, this review summarizes those studies that analyze the impact of nutrition on tumor microenvironment modulation and cancer progression. We review the available information about the effects of specific nutrients on cancer cell progression and on the different cells within the tumor microenvironment. Diet and nutritional status in the…

Nanocrystalline Cellulose Cures Constipation via Gut Microbiota Metabolism.

Constipation can seriously affect the quality of life and increase the risk of colorectal cancer. The present strategies for constipation therapy have adverse effects, such as causing irreversible intestinal damage and affecting the absorption of nutrients. Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC), which is from natural plants, has good biocompatibility and high safety. Herein, we used NCC to treat constipation assessed by the black stool, intestinal tissue sections, and serum biomarkers. We studied the effect of NCC on gut microbiota and discussed the correlation of gut microbiota and metabolites. We …

Non-Coding RNAs and Brain Tumors: Insights Into Their Roles in Apoptosis.

A major terrifying ailment afflicting the humans throughout the world is brain tumor, which causes a lot of mortality among pediatric and adult solid tumors. Several major barriers to the treatment and diagnosis of the brain tumors are the specific micro-environmental and cell-intrinsic features of neural tissues. Absence of the nutrients and hypoxia trigger the cells' mortality in the core of the tumors of humans' brains: however, type of the cells' mortality, including apoptosis or necrosis, has been not found obviously. Current studies have emphasized the non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) since thei…

Comparative metabolic profiling by 1H-NMR spectroscopy analysis reveals the adaptation of S. mansoni from its host to in vitro culture conditions: a pilot study with ex vivo and GSH-supplemented medium-cultured parasites.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by parasitic flatworms (blood fluke) of the genus Schistosoma. Parasites acquire most nutrients for their development and sustainment within the definitive host either by ingestion into the gut or across the body surface. Over the years, the best conditions for long-term maintenance of parasites in vitro have been thoroughly established. In our hands, 1H-NMR spectroscopy represents a powerful tool to characterize the metabolic changes in S. mansoni in response to culturing condition perturbations. In order to compare the metabolic fingerpr…

Immunomodulatory Function of Vitamin D and Its Role in Autoimmune Thyroid Disease.

Vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients required by the human body. It is a steroid hormone that plays an important role in regulating calcium and phosphorus metabolism, and bone health. Epidemiological studies have revealed a close correlation between vitamin D and many common chronic diseases. Additionally, vitamin D has recently been shown to act as an immunomodulatory hormone, and, accordingly, vitamin D deficiency was uncovered as a risk factor for autoimmune thyroid diseases, although the underlying mechanisms are still unknown. It is therefore necessary to disclose the role and…

Tumor hypermetabolism confers resistance to immunotherapy.

Advances in our understanding of tumor immune biology and development of cancer immunotherapies have led to improved outcomes for patients that suffer from aggressive cancers such as metastatic melanoma. Despite these advances, a significant proportion of patients still fail to benefit, and as a result, attention has shifted to understanding how cancer cells escape immune destruction. Of particular interest is the metabolic landscape of the tumor microenvironment, as recent studies have demonstrated how both competition for essential nutrients and depletion of specific amino acids can promote …

Wernike's Encephalopathy as a Part of Refeeding Syndrome.

Cases have been reported about refeeding syndrome after bariatric surgery for obesity, in head and neck cancer patients, in patients with anorexia nervosa, hyperemesis gravidarum, in persons on hunger strike, malnourished alcoholic persons and persons doing religious fasting. Refeeding after prolonged fasting can cause severe morbidity and even mortality, if not done properly. Depletion of intracellular electrolytes, depletion of nutrients and vitamins, decreased BMR, decreased renal functions, decreased insulin, decreased GI functions all contribute to it, once you start refeeding. It takes s…

Monitoring chronological change by liver-to-spleen attenuation ratio for secondary hepatic steatosis for a short term.

Parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease (PNALD) causes hepatic steatosis and moderate liver enzyme elevation due to lack of enteral nutrition and deficiency of some nutrients. However, the period for recovery from PNALD after a nutritional intervention is unknown with no report. Herein, we report a case of a 44-year-old Japanese woman with severe fatty infiltration of the liver due to malnutrition. Our nutritional support team administered appropriate total parenteral, especially fat and carnitine, nutrition to improve her malnutrition. Chronological changes in liver-to-spleen attenuatio…

Role of gut microbial metabolites in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common, multifactorial liver disease that has emerged as a global challenge due to its increasing prevalence and lack of sustainable treatment options. Gut microbiota possess vital functions in fermenting dietary nutrients and synthesizing bioactive molecules. This function is of great importance in maintaining health because these microbial metabolites are essential in regulating energy metabolism, immune response, and other vital physiological processes. Altered gut flora can result in a change in gut microbial metabolites, affecting the onset an…

A Simple and Low-Cost Procedure for Growing Geobacter sulfurreducens Cell Cultures and Biofilms in Bioelectrochemical Systems.

Anaerobic microorganisms play a central role in several environmental processes and regulate global biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and minerals. Many anaerobic microorganisms are important for the production of bioenergy and biofuels. However, the major hurdle in studying anaerobic microorganisms in the laboratory is the requirement for sophisticated and expensive gassing stations and glove boxes to create and maintain the anaerobic environment. This appendix presents a simple design for a gassing station that can be used readily by an inexperienced investigator for cultivation of anaerob…

Hepatic gateways.

The intestinal mucosal barrier contributes to homeostasis by limiting systemic dissemination of microbes and toxins while allowing nutrients to pass through to the systemic circulation. In a recent issue of Science, Spadoni et al. demonstrated a novel mechanism to enable this selectivity: the existence of a gut-vascular barrier (GVB) as indicated by a series of studies on the interaction between murine and human intestine with Salmonella typhimurium species . They showed that (i) enteroglial cells and pericytes in contact with endothelial cells (ECs) form the GVB (ii) Salmonella typhimurium ca…

Metabolic engineering of microbial competitive advantage for industrial fermentation processes.

Microbial contamination is an obstacle to widespread production of advanced biofuels and chemicals. Current practices such as process steril … d they outcompeted contaminating strains in several low-cost feedstocks. Supplying essential growth nutrients through xenobiotic or ecologically rare chemicals provides microbial competitive advantage with minimal external risks, given that engineered biocatalysts only have improved fitness within the customized fermentation environment.

Maturity and security assessment of pilot-scale aerobic co-composting of penicillin fermentation dregs (PFDs) with sewage sludge.

In this work, penicillin fermentation dregs (PFDs) and sewage sludge (SWS) were co-composted to analyze the possibility of recycling nutrients in PFDs. The temperature was maintained above 55°C for more than 3 days, and the final electrical conductivity (EC), pH and C/N all met the national standards in maturity. A nearly 100% removal of the residual penicillin was achieved, and the seed germination index (GI) increased from 0.02% to 83.54±3.1% by the end of the composting process. However, monitoring the quantity of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) showed that the logarithm of the number of…

Gene-environment interactions and the enteric nervous system: Neural plasticity and Hirschsprung disease prevention.

Intestinal function is primarily controlled by an intrinsic nervous system of the bowel called the enteric nervous system (ENS). The cells of the ENS are neural crest derivatives that migrate into and through the bowel during early stages of organogenesis before differentiating into a wide variety of neurons and glia. Although genetic factors critically underlie ENS development, it is now clear that many non-genetic factors may influence the number of enteric neurons, types of enteric neurons, and ratio of neurons to glia. These non-genetic influences include dietary nutrients and medicines th…

Feeding the gut: how, when and with what -- the metabolic issue.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the literature on feeding critically ill patients with special emphasis on the intestine. RECENT FINDINGS: Man … ul gastric feeding is indicative of a functional gastrointestinal tract. Pharmacological effects of nutrients are questionable, but supplementation of deficits (glutamine, selenium, etc.) may be in the patient's best interest. A more individualized prescription of nutrition in the critically ill is advocated.
