The infectivity of Cryptosporidium muris (strain RN 66), originally isolated from the house rat (Iseki 1986), to various laboratory animals was studied by transmission experiments. Arginine vasopressin (AVP), oxytocin (OT) and neurophysins (Np) have been found in the pineal gland and the retina of the rat. Because the retina, pineal gland and Harderian gland (HG) serve analogous functions, we undertook a study to determine the presence of these peptides in these three organs of rats. Bone disease in an outbred colony of Alpk/AP rats over a period of more than 20 years is recorded. The incidence of most conditions, including fracture, necrosis, osteomyelitis, osteitis deformans, renal osteitis fibrosa cystica and neoplasia is rare compared with other species and possible reasons for this low incidence are discussed.

Phenytoin was fed to rats and mice in their diet for 6 wk. The dosage was about 80 mg/kg. Observations were made of the biological effects on infection with plerocercoids of Spirometra erinacei on normal female Snell mice, male chinese hamsters, golden hamsters, normal and hypox rats.
