Neuronal mitochondrial morphology is significantly affected by both fixative and oxygen level during perfusion.

Neurons in the brain have a uniquely polarized structure consisting of multiple dendrites and a single axon generated from a cell body. Interestingly, intracellular mitochondria also show strikingly polarized morphologies along the dendrites and axons: in cortical pyramidal neurons (PNs), dendritic mitochondria have a long and tubular shape, while axonal mitochondria are small and circular. Mitochondria play important roles in each compartment of the neuron by generating adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and buffering calcium, thereby affecting synaptic transmission and neuronal development. High-flow nasal oxygen reduces the incidence of hypoxia in sedated hysteroscopy for assisted reproduction.

BACKGROUNDS AND AIMS: Pain is the main reason for hysteroscopy failure. In day-surgical settings, hysteroscopy procedures are commonly performed with the patient under sedation. Hypoxia is the most common adverse event during sedation and can lead to severe adverse events. This study aimed to compare the incidence of hypoxia when using high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) with that when using regular nasal oxygen in patients undergoing hysteroscopy with sedation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this single-center, prospective, randomized, single-blinded study, 960 female patients undergoing elective diagn

Potential Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Orthodontic Treatment: A Systematic Review of Animal Studies.

Understanding the fundamental principles of tooth movement could reduce the duration of treatment and achieve a stable outcome, resulting in patient satisfaction. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was a modality in which a patient inhaled 100% O2 while subjected to high atmospheric pressure. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy facilitated the supply of oxygen to the human body's organs and tissues and served a variety of applications, including patient care and wound treatment. This review article aimed to describe animal studies of the potential effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in orthodontic therapy. It w

Intermediate-term survival and functional outcomes of COVID-19 extracorporeal membrane oxygenation patients.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been associated with acceptable short-term survival in patients with refractory respiratory failure secondary to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Previous studies have demonstrated acceptable long-term outcomes in patients supported with ECMO for respiratory failure of other etiologies. However, long-term survival and functional outcomes in COVID ECMO patients remain unknown. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all COVID patients requiring ECMO at our hospital. The primary outcomes measured were survival to d

Validation of Respiratory Rate-Oxygenation Index in Patients With COVID-19-Related Respiratory Failure.

OBJECTIVES: The respiratory rate-oxygenation (ROX) index is a fraction of oxygen saturation, Fio2, and respiratory rate that has been validated to predict receipt of invasive mechanical ventilation in patients receiving high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC). This study aimed to validate ROX in a cohort of inpatients with COVID-19-related respiratory failure. DESIGN: Retrospective validation of the ROX index. We calculated sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and 95% CIs of ROX for invasive mechanical ventilation any time during hospitalization. SETTING: Tw

High-flow nasal cannula oxygen in patients with haematological malignancy: a retrospective observational study.

Patients with haematological malignancies (HM) face high rates of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and mortality. High-flow nasal cannula oxygen (HFNCO) is increasingly used to support HM patients in ward settings, but there is limited evidence on the safety and efficacy of HFNCO in this group. We retrospectively reviewed all HM patients receiving ward-based HFNCO, supervised by a critical care outreach service (CCOS), from January 2014 to January 2019. We included 130 consecutive patients. Forty-three (33.1%) were weaned off HFNCO without ICU admission. Eighty-seven (66.9%) were admitted t

High generation of reactive oxygen species from neutrophils in patients with severe COVID-19.

Neutrophilia and an elevated neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio are both characteristic features of severe COVID-19 infection. However, functional neutrophil responses have been poorly investigated in this setting. We utilised a novel PMA-based stimulation assay to determine neutrophil-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in patients with severe COVID-19 infection, non-COVID related sepsis and healthy study participants. ROS production was markedly elevated in COVID-19 patients with median values ninefold higher than in healthy controls and was particularly high in patients on mechanical

VEGF-Trap Modulates Retinal Inflammation in the Murine Oxygen-Induced Retinopathy (OIR) Model.

Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) agents are the first-line treatment for retinal neovascular diseases, which represent the most prevalent causes of acquired vision loss world-wide. VEGF-Trap (Aflibercept, AFL), a recombinant decoy receptor recognizing ligands of both VEGFR-1 and -2, was recently reported to be highly efficient in improving visual acuity and preserving retinal anatomy in individuals affected by diabetic macular edema. However, the precise molecular and cell biological mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of this novel tool have yet to be elucidated. Using

Ferrostatin-1 attenuates pathological angiogenesis in oxygen-induced retinopathy via inhibition of ferroptosis.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vision-threatening ocular disease that occurs in premature infants, but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Since oxidative stress has been well documented in the ROP development, we aimed to investigate whether ferroptosis, a new type of cell death characterized by lipid peroxidation and iron overload, is also involved in ROP. We detected the lipid peroxidation, oxidative stress and the expression of ferroptosis markers in the retina of mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy. After ferroptosis inhibitor, ferrostatin-1, was administered by intrav

Changes in nanomechanical properties of single neuroblastoma cells as a model for oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD).

Although complex, the biological processes underlying ischemic stroke are better known than those related to biomechanical alterations of single cells. Mechanisms of biomechanical changes and their relations to the molecular processes are crucial for understanding the function and dysfunction of the brain. In our study, we applied atomic force microscopy (AFM) to quantify the alterations in biomechanical properties in neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells subjected to oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) and reoxygenation (RO). Obtained results reveal several characteristics. Cell viability remained at

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for coronavirus disease 2019-related acute respiratory distress syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To understand the potential role of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), highlighting evolving practices and outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: The role for ECMO in COVID-19-related ARDS has evolved throughout the pandemic. Early reports of high mortality led to some to advocate for withholding ECMO in this setting. Subsequent data suggested mortality rates were on par with those from studies conducted prior to the pandemic. However, outcomes are evolving and mortality in these patients

Multivariate Classification of Brain Blood-Oxygen Signal Complexity for the Diagnosis of Children with Tourette Syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by the presence of multiple motor and vocal tics. Because of its varied clinical expressions and lack of reliable diagnostic biomarker, present TS diagnosis still depends on qualitative descriptions of symptoms. Our study aimed to investigate whether the complexity of resting state brain activity can serve as a potential biomarker for TS diagnosis, since it has been used successfully in various neuropsychiatric disorders, including two common TS comorbidities: attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and

One-Year Outcomes With Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support for Severe COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can cause acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. Venovenous (VV) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used in patients in whom conventional mechanical ventilatory support has failed. To date, published data have focused on survival from ECMO and survival to discharge. In addition to survival to discharge, this study reports 1-year follow-up data for patients who were successfully discharged from the hospital. METHODS: A single-institution, retrospective review of all patients with severe COVID-19 who we
