Development of a core outcome set on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine for rheumatic heart disease: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is an important cause of acquired heart disease in children and adolescents. Clinical trials on RHD treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or integrated medicine are gradually increasing in China. However, because the outcomes of clinical trials are subject to heterogeneity and selective reporting, similar studies cannot be merged and compared, complicating assessing the effectiveness and safety of TCM, and diminishing the value of clinical trials. Therefore, there is an urgent need to design a TCM or integrated medicine core out

Anxiety, Depression, and Social Skills in Girls with Fragile X Syndrome: Understanding the Cycle to Improve Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Female patients with fragile X syndrome (FXS), a genetic condition associated with a mutation in the FMR1 gene, are at significantly elevated risk for developing anxiety and depression. This study is designed to better understand these symptoms in school-age girls, particularly as they relate to age, social skills, and functional outcomes. METHODS: We compared 58 girls aged 6 to 16 years with FXS with 46 age-matched, sex-matched, and developmentally matched peers without FXS on measures of anxiety, depression, social skills, adaptive behavior, and quality of life. RESULTS: Girls w

Myopic Progression in Girls with Gonadotrophin-Releasing Hormone Agonist Treatment for Central Precocious Puberty.

We sought to determine whether the myopic progression of patients with central precocious puberty (CPP) who were undergoing treatment differed from that of their healthy peers with normal pubertal onset and progression. Eighteen girls with CPP and 14 age-matched controls who underwent regular ophthalmic examinations for at least 1 year were included. All the CPP patients received a 3.75 mg leuprolide acetate depot subcutaneously every 28 days. The spherical equivalent (SE) and axial length (AL) for myopia progression and the pubertal parameters (height, body weight, body mass index, Tanner sta

Effect of weekly teriparatide injections on osteoporotic fracture healing: protocol for a double-blind, randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Both animal studies and clinical trials have shown that daily parathyroid hormone administration promotes bone fracture healing. We previously found that weekly injections of the recombinant human parathyroid hormone teriparatide at a dosage of 20 μg/kg promoted tibial fracture healing to the same extent as daily injections of teriparatide at a dosage of 10 μg/kg in a rodent model. However, the effect of weekly teriparatide administration on human fracture healing is unreported. This protocol describes a randomised controlled clinical trial designed to evaluate whether weekly adm

Students' and Faculty Perspectives Toward the Role and Value of the Hidden Curriculum in Undergraduate Medical Education: a Qualitative Study from Saudi Arabia.

A hidden medical curriculum is defined as the unwritten, unofficial, and unintended learning that students experience in medical school along with more formal aspects of education. This term describes the behaviours, attitudes, assumptions and beliefs conveyed by teachers, peers and the surrounding environment. However, more research is needed to evaluate its impact on student and faculty interactions in this context. We conducted this qualitative study utilizing focus group and semi-structured interviews of students and faculty to evaluate the perspectives of medical students and faculty towa

Personal-recovery-oriented community mental healthcare: qualitative evaluation of a developmental project.

OBJECTIVES: Mental healthcare is commonly aimed at reducing symptoms in individual service users. When only symptomatic recovery is addressed, not all service users experience sufficient recovery, and when care is aimed only at individuals (instead of the neighbourhood), not all people in need of mental healthcare are reached. This study evaluated a project that aimed to improve mental healthcare in a neighbourhood, by improving healthcare providers' outreach to the residents living in the neighbourhood, by improving collaboration among healthcare providers and focussing on the residents' pers

Speech, Language, and Communication Skills of Adolescents With Craniofacial Microsomia.

Purpose Youth with craniofacial microsomia (CFM) have anomalies and comorbidities that increase their risk for speech, language, and communication deficits. We examined these outcomes in youth with and without CFM and explored differences as a function of CFM phenotype and hearing status. Method Participants included youth ages 11-17 years with CFM (n = 107) and demographically similar controls (n = 306). We assessed speech intelligibility, articulation, receptive and expressive language, and parent and teacher report measures of communication. Hearing status was also screened at the study vis

Development of a self-guided web-based exercise intervention (SPIN) to treat shoulder pain in people living with spinal cord injury: protocol of a mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic shoulder pain is common after spinal cord injury (SCI) and limits community mobility. This leads to loss of independence and reduced quality of life. Evidence suggests that exercises can help reduce shoulder pain. However, cost, expertise and transport barriers frequently limit access to treatment services. The objective of this study is to develop an evidence-based, acceptable, usable and persuasive self-guided web-based exercise intervention to treat shoulder pain in people living with SCI. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: An iterative and phased person-based approach (PBA) will

Diagnostic barriers for somatic symptom disorders in primary care: study protocol for a mixed methods study in Germany.

INTRODUCTION: Somatoform or somatic symptom disorders ((S)SD) are common and have a negative impact on the patients' health-related quality of life, healthcare use and costs. In primary care, which is central to the management of (S)SD, diagnosis and treatment tend to be delayed. There is a significant lack of evidence regarding the barriers in the diagnostic process of (S)SD in primary care and how interventions should be tailored to address them. The aim of this study is to analyse the diagnostic process in primary care that results in the diagnosis or non-diagnosis of a (S)SD. METHODS AND

A Comparison of Opioid and Nonopioid Substance Users in Residential Treatment for Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Disorders.

The past decade has seen a marked increase in the illicit use of opioids, as well as a doubling of the percentage of individuals seeking treatment for opioid use disorders. However, little is known about the differences between opioid users and nonopioid users in residential treatment. Further, no studies have been published that compare opioid users and nonopioid users in treatment for co-occurring substance use and mental disorders. To address this gap, this study examined differences between opioid and nonopioid substance users in residential treatment for co-occurring disorders. Data was d
