By screening consecutive autopsy cases with an antibody that recognizes human polyomaviruses, we found a case of malignant lymphoma in which the virus infection was confined to epithelia of the renal calyces, renal pelvis, ureter, and urinary bladder. The virus was confirmed as BK virus by a specific monoclonal antibody against BK virus T antigen, and numerous virus particles were identified by electron microscopy. The results showed that BK virus is a human urotheliotrophic virus.

Although the majority of impalpable undescended testes lie in an intracanalicular location, a significant number are also found to be intraabdominal. The expected location of intraabdominal testes is a line joining the renal hilum and the internal inguinal ring. We describe a case of an adult patient in whom impalpable undescended testes were located in a retrovesical location. This case highlights the importance of performing a thorough inspection of the entire abdomen and pelvis if the impalpable testis is not found in an expected location.

A retrospective analysis of 1000 case histories of women who delivered by cesarean section has helped define the principal factors of postsurgical endometritis risk. If the risk factors are combined, the potentiality of the disease development increases. The most hazardous combinations of risk factors are as follows: grave gestosis combined with obesity, anemia, and a chronic infection focus, as well as clinical non-correspondence of the maternal pelvis to fetal head, combined with dry labor.

Another two cases of aberrant renal papilla are described. These had been diagnosed following an IVP procedure and corroborated by ultrasound. One patient had presented with prostatism and the other had consulted for episodes of renal colic. Because a differential diagnosis is mandatory to distinguish this uncommon condition from other filling defects of the renal pelvis and particularly from false aberrant renal papilla, we were prompted to report on these two cases.

A unusual case of colorectal intussusception after transanal surgery of a polyp of the sigmoid colon is presented. Clinical Signs consisted of transanal bleeding and mucous diarrhoe. The diagnosis was established after an enema with water-soluble contrast media and computed tomography of the pelvis. The radiological appearance was similar to that of intussusception at other sites of the large bowel: The enema showed a sharply outlined filling defect whereas CT demonstrated a target-like intraluminal mass.

The problems of the direct and indirect diaphragm lesions are discussed based on the own collective of patients. The most common trauma pattern was the direct immediate rupture of the left half (Strug). All ruptures were combined with additional trauma including lesions to the abdomen, pelvis, thorax and cranium. Diagnosis could usually be made by conventional X-ray techniques. The high rate of lethality is explained by the extensive additional trauma that is seen with rupture of the diaphragm.

A thirty-two-year-old man presented with a history of infertility, recurrent epididymitis, and a fluctuant pelvic mass on rectal examination. Preoperative evaluation disclosed a nonvisualized right kidney and a multiloculated cystic lesion in the pelvis. The intravenous pyelogram suggested a ureterocele on the right side. A cystic pelvic mass was noted on ultrasound and computed tomography. A dysplastic right kidney with an ectopic ureter inserting into a cystic seminal vesicle was found at surgical exploration.

Although aneurysms of the common iliac artery are a rare occurrence they should be investigated routinely in patients with urinary or thrombo-embolic venous manifestations in the pelvis minor. Clinical signs are inconstant and diagnosis requires the use of abdominopelvic ultrasound tomography. Venous and urinary complications constitute warning signals suggesting the need for surgery to avoid sudden or untimely rupture. Operation in patients with a poor general condition should be performed as a function of the course of the lesion.

Leiomyomas may originate from any anatomic location of smooth muscle in the genitourinary system but are uncommon neoplasms. Five unusual cases of leiomyomas arising from the renal pelvis, bladder, spermatic cord, and glans penis are presented. The leiomyoma arising from the glans penis in a three-year-old boy is the first case of a leiomyoma in that location noted in the literature. A review of leiomyomas from each genitourinary structure of origin is presented.

Clinico-physiological examinations of 218 patients with uterine myoma were carried out using the methods of electromyography and rheopgraphy. The following syndromes were revealed: a myopathic and a radiculoalgic ones; the syndrome of the external dermal femoral and the femorogenital nerves. The pathogenesis of these syndromes consists in compression of the lumbar arteries and the minor pelvis ganglia by the enlarged uterus. On condition of timely treatment including surgical ablation of the myoma the prognosis of the neurological disturbances is, as a rule, favourable.

According to the author's findings in 80 of 125 patients under observation the development of abdominal actinomycosis was related with inflammation in the appendicular process, in 65 patients the former starting after appendectomy. In examination of 100 patients with diagnosis of acute appendicitis actinomycosis of the ileocecal region was diagnosed in 5 patients. Actinomycosis was spreading from the ileocecal region by contact in retroperitoneal cellular tissue in 23 cases, in the left iliac region--in 12, in the lesser pelvis--in 8.

Immediate reactions of the intestines during or after radiotherapy of the pelvis are very common. Later complications requiring surgical intervention are seldom found. Out of 101 patients with bladder carcinomas, we observed 4 with severe irreversible intestinal changes. These had been operated and had received post-operative radiotherapy. On 3 patients a sigmoid stenosis had to be resected under the protection of a colostomy. On the fourth patient an ileovesical fistula was closed primary.

Percutaneous nephrostomy is a simple technique for temporary drainage of an obstructed kidney. Under local anaesthesia a ureteric catheter is passed through a Vim-Silverman needle into the renal pelvis and is connected to a drainage bag. Seven cases (six successful) in which this method was used are described and the indications are discussed. It has been free from complications, is acceptable to patients, and is felt to represent a useful addition to the methods available for the treatment of obstruction of the upper urinary tract.

The use of clinical pelvimetry to assess the adequacy of the pelvis for vaginal birth is a controversial subject in modern-day obstetric and gynecological practice. Although it is not considered standard clinical practice in the United States, there is still an emphasis on teaching the concept as part of medical education and within clinical anatomy and obstetrics textbooks. We compiled research studies from the last decade to explore if pelvimetry is clinically useful and question its perceived importance in medical education.

Technical advances in magnetic resonance neurography (MRN) have significantly improved its utility for imaging the lumbosacral plexus (LSP). In this article, the authors review LSP anatomy and selected pathology examples. In addition, the authors will discuss technical considerations for MRN with specific points for the branch nerves off the plexus.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the renal pelvis is a rare malignancy. We report a case of a 43-year-old male presenting with stones and a non-functioning kidney. Incidental SCC was diagnosed histopathologically on nephrectomy. The patient then returned with metastasis to the liver after one year. Nephrolithiasis is the most important risk factor implicated in renal SCC; hence, awareness of this rare entity in a patient of long-standing nephrolithiasis is important.

Ganglioneuromas are a very rare benign neural tumor, commonly derived from the ganglia of the sympathetic system, and are composed of mature Schwann cells, ganglion cells, and nerve fibres. They may arise anywhere from the base of the skull to the pelvis along the paravertebral sympathetic plexus. We report a rare case of synchronous ganglioneuroma and schwannoma, mistaken for carotid body tumor. The coexistence of these two entities in head and neck region is very rare.

Although it has been recognized for more than 140 years that the pacemaker driving pyeloureteric peristalsis resides within the kidney, the cellular mechanisms underlying this autorhythmicity have been little investigated. The demonstration by Hurtado et al. of a role of hyperpolarization-activated cation channels in the maintenance of coordinated propagating contractions in the mouse renal pelvis raises a number of intriguing possibilities in addition to the provided correlation with 'pacemaker' function as in the heart and neurons.

BACKGROUND: Extrusion of fetal parts into the abdomen after second-trimester pregnancy termination is rare.
CASE: We report a case of extrusion of fetal parts into the broad ligament at the time of second-trimester pregnancy termination that remained undetected for 10 days.
CONCLUSION: In cases of perforation during second-trimester pregnancy termination, meticulous evaluation of the abdomen and pelvis with ultrasonography or computerized tomography should be performed if complete fetal evacuation cannot be confirmed.
