Advancing neuropsychology training: Insights and advice from a qualitative analysis in 102 brain-behavior experts.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychologists possess knowledge that could benefit trainees as they navigate important career decisions within their unique training pathways. This wisdom is typically passed down in an individual mentorship model wherein supervisors and advisors relay advice directly. While this model has advantages, trainees can benefit from a broader range of perspectives. This study addressed this gap by consolidating advice for trainees through analysis of open-ended interview responses from a diverse group of brain-behavior experts. METHOD: Participants were interviewees (N = 102) from t

Early detection of non-small cell lung cancer: an electronic health record data-driven approach.

BACKGROUND: Specific patient characteristics increase the risk of cancer, necessitating personalized healthcare approaches. For high-risk individuals, tailored clinical management ensures proactive monitoring and timely interventions. Electronic health record (EHR) data are crucial for supporting these personalized approaches, improving cancer prevention and early diagnosis. We leverage EHR data and build a prediction model for early detection of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: We utilize data from Mass General Brigham's EHR and implement a three-stage ensemble learning approach.

Engineering the Future of Regenerative Medicines in Gut Health with Stem Cell-Derived Intestinal Organoids.

The advent of intestinal organoids, three-dimensional structures derived from stem cells, has significantly advanced the field of biology by providing robust in vitro models that closely mimic the architecture and functionality of the human intestine. These organoids, generated from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), embryonic stem cells (ESCs), or adult stem cells, possess remarkable capabilities for self-renewal, differentiation into diverse intestinal cell types, and functional recapitulation of physiological processes, including nutrient absorption, epithelial barrier integrity, and h

Pharmacological insights into gut microbiota modulation in systemic lupus erythematosus: Mechanisms, treatment strategies, and clinical implications.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease characterized by widespread inflammation and immune system dysregulation. Recent research suggests that the gut microbiota may play a role in the development of SLE by modulating immune system responses, affecting cytokine production, and altering the activity of T and B cells lymphocytes. As a result, there is a growing interest in microbiota-targeted therapies, including probiotics, dietary changes, and fecal microbiota transplantation. These methods may help restore the balance of microbes and reduce disease activity, but th

Risk of developing psoriatic arthritis in patients with psoriasis initiating treatment with different classes of biologics.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the risk of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in plaque psoriasis (PsO) patients receiving different classes of biologics. METHODS: A retrospective observational study involving consecutive bionaïve PsO patients starting biologic treatment was performed. We compared the occurrence of PsA by the class of the biologic (tumour necrosis factor [TNF], interleukin [IL]-17, or IL-23 inhibitors) using inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) in the setting of multiple treatments to balance pretreatment covariates across cohorts and thus adjust for potential confounders. Silk Fabric Functionalized by Nanosilver Enabling the Wearable Sensing for Biomechanics and Biomolecules.

Integrating biomechanical and biomolecular sensing mechanisms into wearable devices is a formidable challenge and key to acquiring personalized health management. To address this, we have developed an innovative multifunctional sensor enabled by plasma functionalized silk fabric, which possesses multimodal sensing capabilities for biomechanics and biomolecules. A seed-mediated in situ growth method was employed to coat silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto silk fibers, resulting in silk fibers functionalized with AgNPs (SFs@Ag) that exhibit both piezoresistive response and localized surface plasmo

Evaluation and guide for embedding opioid use disorder education in health professions' curricula.

BACKGROUND: Morbidity and mortality from Opioid Use Disorder is a health crisis in the United States. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a devastating increase of 38.4% in overdose deaths from the 12-month period leading up to June 2019 compared with the 12-month period leading up to May 2020, primarily driven by synthetic opioids. Buprenorphine is an effective medication for opioid use disorder but uptake is slow due in part to lack of provider knowledge, confidence, and negative attitudes/stigma toward patients with OUD. Addressing these barriers in academic training is a promising appr

Working towards convergence of the clinical management of differences of sex development/intersex conditions and the human rights framework: A case study.

OBJECTIVE: Medical treatments that aim to modify the appearance of the genitals in children who are born with a difference of sex development/intersex (DSD/I*) condition are highly controversial. Human Rights bodies worldwide have argued that such treatments are conflicting with the child's right of personal autonomy and should be legally restricted to the unique situation where the child's physical health is in danger. DESIGN: We here review the current status of legal initiatives in Europe that have addressed the issue of medical treatments in minors who have a DSD for which they have not b

Genomics as a Clinical Decision Support Tool: Successful Proof of Concept for Improved ASD Outcomes.

Considerable evidence is emerging that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is most often triggered by a range of different genetic variants that interact with environmental factors such as exposures to toxicants and changes to the food supply. Up to 80% of genetic variations that contribute to ASD found to date are neither extremely rare nor classified as pathogenic. Rather, they are less common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), found in 1-15% or more of the population, that by themselves are not disease-causing. These genomic variants contribute to ASD by interacting with each other, along w

An Individual Patient's "Body" on Chips-How Organismoid Theory Can Translate Into Your Personal Precision Therapy Approach.

The first concepts for reproducing human systemic organismal biology in vitro were developed over 12 years ago. Such concepts, then called human- or body-on-a-chip, claimed that microphysiological systems would become the relevant technology platform emulating the physiology and morphology of human organisms at the smallest biologically acceptable scale in vitro and, therefore, would enable the selection of personalized therapies for any patient at unprecedented precision. Meanwhile, the first human organoids-stem cell-derived complex three-dimensional organ models that expand and self-organiz
