OBJECTIVE: We developed a simple, inexpensive test for assessing vertigo in persons with peripheral vestibular disorders.
METHOD: The test was administered to 16 asymptomatic adults and 16 patients with chronic vertigo caused by peripheral vestibular disorders. Participants sat in a chair and as rapidly as possible transferred 25 beanbags one at a time from a basket placed on the floor to a basket held .91 m up in the air. The task was timed, and the participants rated the level of vertigo elicited on a 10-point scale.

We report a rare case of pneumonic tularemia in a person with an advanced HIV infection, in which a mediastinoscopy was ultimately required for microbiological confirmation. Serological testing remained negative. This case illustrates the extent to which pneumonic tularemia can mimic pulmonary tuberculosis and illustrates the limitations of serology in immunocompromised individuals. Clinicians should consider tularemia in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary disease with necrotizing lymphadenopathy, even in regions where the incidence is low.

Methyldibromoglutaronitrile/phenoxyethanol (Euxyl K 400) is a preservative found in both personal care products and industrial sources. Although Euxyl K 400 initially appeared to have low sensitizing potential, increased prevalence of contact allergy to Euxyl K 400 led to regulatory intervention. This review summarizes the history, epidemiology, and management of contact allergy to Euxyl K 400. Issues related to patch-test preparations are also discussed.

Screening programs should begin by classifying the individual patient's level of risk based on personal, family, and medical history, which will determine the appropriate approach for each subject. Fifty patients (32 women, 18 men) who underwent stapedectomy [FISCH, V. (1), 1982] for otosclerosis were studied. Histo-compatibility antigens were typed in all patients using the microlymphocytic test to determine antigens of the HLA system loci A and B. Statistical comparison of results with those obtained in a control group of 339 persons without otosclerosis showed that otosclerosis has a genetic HLA-related component.

The records were studied of all children identified in the last 16 years as having severe sensorineural hearing loss (bilateral 60 dB or more, across all frequencies) in west Essex (a typical health district with a child population, 0-16 years, of 54,000). The person to first suspect the child's hearing loss and the results of their 8-month distraction test are discussed. The reasons for delay in diagnosis and acquisition of aids are examined.

We tested the haemorheological effects of the addition of 3.5% oxypolygelatine, 10% dextran 40, 6% dextran 75 or 5% albumin, respectively, to fresh donor blood of 25 healthy young persons. We examined the aggregation and the viscosity of substituent plasma mixtures in such various, but constant volume relations as may be present during intravenous infusion. Albumin reduced viscosity and aggregation, but especially dextran 75 increased both parameters significantly.

We used an integrative review to synthesize existing literature on the factors associated with HIV testing by youth ages 13 to 24 years in the United States.
