The present prospective study aimed to perform quantitative sensory testing (QST) in patients with painful or painless syringomyelia before and after surgical treatment of their syrinx (at 3 and 9 months). The records of 196 patients presenting with a clinical suspicion of scaphoid injury were reviewed to evaluate how junior accident and emergency doctors in a teaching hospital managed these patients. The management that was provided was assessed, and it was ascertained whether the presence of a unit policy meant that accident and emergency junior trainees managed patients accordingly. A knowledge of the special concerns and physiology in pediatric female patients allows the physician to obtain pertinent histories and appropriate examinations. This information permits diagnosis and treatment of sequelae of sexual abuse, common gynecologic infections, and trauma. More complex problems, such as determination of sources of vaginal bleeding and endocrinopathies, also can be evaluated. Finally, benign and malignant conditions affecting the internal and external genitalia may be diagnosed and treated or referred to a subspecialist as needed.

We report on a German boy, born to nonconsanguineous parents, with an apparently new combination of multiple congenital anomalies including extraordinary hirsutism, marked brachycephaly, abnormal position of thumbs, pedes excavati with claw-toes, an abnormal face, and mental retardation. Additionally the boy manifests a disorder of uric acid metabolism. This sporadic case may represent a new syndrome due to a fresh autosomal or X-linked mutation, or chance-isolated case due to segregation of an autosomal recessive gene.
